In terms of getting a bigger and better TV deal for the ACC in Basketball and football, a SUPER CONFERENCE is necessary .I get it. I get that with the new playoff system about to be placed in college football , we need to up our standing as a middle of the road football league ,while securing our spot as the best basketball league bar none.
Let me cut to the chase. In football SEC is king. What makes them who they are besides the obvious? Who coming into the ACC actually gives us the national brands we need to go from lower tier to that elusive SUPER CONFERENCE in football but solidifies the ACC as the SEC of basketball?
We all know Notre Dame is a partial member who will have to jump head in once the playoff situation muck clears. They want to keep their natural rivalries with USC, Stanford, Michigan and Navy. That is possible by giving up your bye week and adding a 13th game or playing two of them every other year. Now with this scenario we would need a 16th full member. Is 18 members too much of a stretch? I think its not.You already don't play everyone in basketball. In football you could be made to play one or two extra cross conference games instead of the Savannah States of the world.
A lot of people want the academic standing of a University as the determining factor over who is admitted to the conference.Looking at the SEC they have the biggest tv contract in football. Is that because the have the best academic institutions from top to bottom? No, they have more national brand teams than any conference going.
Questions for the masses:
16 or 18 super conference?
High academics small brand or national brand middle to low academics?
