Taivon Jacobs has committed to Ohio State, IMS has learned. Picked OSU over #Terps and West Virginia.— Jakob Engelke (@Jakob_Engelke) July 19, 2012
Fooey. There were three guys I thought Maryland really needed to land to prove that the local recruiting thing wasn't a fluke: Jacobs, Paul Harris, and Marcus Newby. I would've taken any one of them happily. All three are now off the board. So ... in terms of local recruiting, now what? Barring a massive turnaround things are done with Kendall Fuller, too. Na'Ty Rodgers is basically the only big name left, and I'm not hugely confident about that one, either. It's not a huge deal, really. Given how poorly last season went, it's not realistic to expect Maryland to have a killer class. What they have so far is pretty impressive itself, in truth, even if it is a fair bit short of game-changing. But now things are looking pretty much entirely reliant on how things go next year: win, and they might be able to snag a few decmomitments and hold onto their own guys to elevate the class to an elite status. Lose ... well, and the recruiting battle down the stretch very well could be fought on home turf. Though that was always the case to some extent, I guess. Anyway: hopefully tomorrow will be better with Kingsley Opara.
