Maryland Baseball has a new skipper

It's John Szefc (pronounced "Chef", whose most recent tenure was at Kansas State.

While I was silently rooting for Eric Milton to get the nod, his coaching/recruiting experience has been limited to one year. Szefc has coached for awhile and has been a decent recruiter. Whether he can produce the kinds of recruiting success that Bakich did remains to be seen. But what I really like about this hire is Szefc's experience as a hitting instructor. Maryalnd's weakness last year was their hitting and Szefc might improve that. Plus Milton (I hope) will still be around to assist with pitching, especially since pitching coach Sean Kenney joined Bakich at Michigan. Kenny is an Ann Arbor native so his moving to Michigan doesn't alarm me.

Friday the 13th was the witching hour in terms of signing a pro contract. I don't know if Reed or Haslup signed, although I would be surprised if either did. Meanwhile Alfredo Rodiriguez is doing fair at Helena. Michael Boyden has been pitching well so far in the minors.

So Maryland baseball does carry some cache. Let's hope that Szefc can improve the hitting and the Terps make some serious noise in the ACC next season.
