UMD Wrestling adds 15 recruits for 2012-13

Head Coach Kerry McCoy released this year's recruting class today. Not many local names on it, but one interesting transfer. Maryland returns 9 of its 10 starters, so mat time will be at a premium for the first year or so for this year's class.

From the UMd press release:

The class features two National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Junior National Wrestling Championships All-Americans, four state champions and 12 state medalists.

"I am really excited about the incoming class," said McCoy. "Going into last season, we had a good incoming recruiting class and some solid returnees. Some opportunities came about during the season and we were looking to add depth with this class. Not only were we able to add depth, but we were able to get some really good quality wrestlers who will challenge for starting positions right away."

The transfer is Carl Buchholz from Rutgers. Given that he's a 285 lber and UMd already has rising junior Spencer Myers, it's a bit puzzling why Buchholz would transfer for wrestling reasons. A sixth place finish at the Nittany Lion Open doesn't quite compare with Meyers' NCAA accomplishments in his two years, including earning All-American status as a freshman.

The list of recruits follows after the jump, taken from the UMd release.
