Good article about the Terp LAX team. Here's a few choice bits....
In an unfortunate case of deja vu, as the final whistle blew at Gillette Stadium, the Terrapins were left watching another team celebrate a national championship win as Loyola defeated Maryland 9-3 Monday afternoon in Foxborough, Mass.
“Obviously it's heartbreaking being in there again and not being able to pull it out,” said senior Michael Shakespeare after the game. “It's a good feeling making the championship, but coming up one shy is tough, especially the second year in a row.”
While the result was the same, Maryland making the championship again was a feat in it's own right for a senior class that battled tough for two years.
“It's a huge honor to play for the University of Maryland. We left it all out on the field today. This has been one of the most rewarding experience of my life,” said senior Joe Cummings. “You come into every season and your goal is to win a national championship and to play for the state of Maryland and to play for a university that loves lacrosse...We came up just short of our goal, but my hope is that our class and this team, we established a legacy that getting to the championship and winning the championship is a goal every year, and I hope future Terps know that's the goal.”
As another terrific senior class departs College Park, the Maryland tradition has been restored. All that's left is a picture with the Walnut and Oak.
“We're gone but we're not forgotten,” Shakespeare said. “Hopefully we've instilled something that can push them through next year.”
We also need to give love to Cathy Reese and the Lady Laxers, who came up just short against a stalling and flopping Northwestern team who got their 7th NC in 8 yrs-2nd to Maryland' 10. We had three 1st team AA, and one 2nd team.
