Many people here have mixed views on the rat, some, like myself cannot stand him in any way shape or form, while others appreciate his coaching talent and success but dismiss him for his affiliations. I am more than a little tired of hearing about all his accomplishments with puke as well as with Team USA, which is why i take this to be good news. Dont get me wrong i am 100% behind team USA and want them to be dominant(which they should be considering all the basketball talent in the US), but i think that there are plenty of coaches willing and able to take this job and do just as well so that our country can succeed without having to deal with the (blue) devil.
More importantly for us turtles, this could be an indicator for coach k's career as a whole. If he no longer interested in coaching Team USA past this "season" then it is quite possible that his career at puke will soon follow suit. Of course the next Olympics past the current showing is not until 2016 which still give him four more years even if he intends to no longer be coaching by that time. Not to mention stepping down from team USA could even be for the purpose of lightening his load in order to stay in the game longer. At the end of the day however, being head coach of Team USA is possibly the most prestigious basketball coaching position in the world, and someone who is serious about coaching for the foreseeable future would step down from such a position for no reason.
Now, of course this is all speculation beyond his decision to not coach the US four years from now, but i for one am more than ready to watch a rival program go through a rocky transition period, especially if it is duke basketball. Feel free to discuss how far fetched this speculation is or simply fantasize about down years in durham when Turgeon and co routinely steamroll the devils as if they were wake forest.
