I decided that I wanted to prove a point to myself that most freshman do not significantly contribute, even the high level recruits. I used the ESPN rankings for 2011 for players ranked 11-30 to see what they contributed to the stat sheet this year. Out of the 20 players, only 3 made significant contributions. See the chart below.
| Team | Games Played | MPG | PPG | RPG | APG | |
| 11. Myck Kabongo | Texas | 34 | 30.6 | 9.6 | 3 | 5.2 |
| 12. Khem Birch | Pitt | 10 | 15 | 4.4 | 5 | 0 |
| 13. PJ Hairston | UNC | 37 | 13 | 5.7 | 2.2 | 0.8 |
| 14. Cody Zeller | Indiana | 36 | 28.5 | 15.6 | 6.6 | 1.3 |
| 15. Josiah Turner | Arizona | 30 | 24.7 | 6.8 | 3.1 | 2.4 |
| 16. BJ Young | Arkansas | 32 | 25.2 | 15.3 | 3.1 | 2.3 |
| 17. Tony Wroten Jr. | Washington | 35 | 30.3 | 16 | 5 | 3.7 |
| 18. Dorian Finney-Smith | Virginia Tech | 33 | 29 | 6.3 | 7 | 1.9 |
| 19. Kyle Wiltjer | Kentucky | 38 | 11.9 | 5.1 | 1.8 | 0.4 |
| 20. Rakeem Christmas | Syracuse | 37 | 11.5 | 2.8 | 2.9 | 0.2 |
| 21. Michael Carter-Williams | Syracuse | 26 | 10.3 | 2.7 | 1.5 | 2.1 |
| 22. Nick Johnson | Arizona | 36 | 27.9 | 9 | 3.2 | 2.4 |
| 23. Branden Dawson | Michigan St | 31 | 20.6 | 8.4 | 4.5 | 0.9 |
| 24. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope | Georgia | 32 | 32.1 | 13.2 | 5.2 | 1.2 |
| 25. Dom Pointer | St Johns | 34 | 29.8 | 6.5 | 4.7 | 1.5 |
| 26. Jabari Brown | Oregon | 2 | 25.5 | 6 | 2 | 0.5 |
| 27. Wayne Blackshear | Louisville | 15 | 7 | 2.5 | 1.4 | 0.1 |
| 28. Chane Behanan | Louisville | 40 | 26 | 9.5 | 7.5 | 0.8 |
| 29. Michael Gbinje | Duke | 19 | 5.8 | 1.7 | 0.8 | 0.2 |
| 30. Levi Randolph | Alabama | 32 | 27 | 6.5 | 3.9 | 1.7 |
Rankings do not mean everything, but I used 20 players to get a decent sample size(note: all of our recruits are listed outside of the top 30 except for Cleare). If you'll notice, hardly any of the players on this list made a significant contribution, save for Zeller, Young and Wroten. My point is, for all of those wishing that some of our players should transfer, and others who think that any of our recruits will become worldbeaters next year, are probably wrong. Which is why keeping players such as Parker is important for the fact that they have already played in the ACC, within Turgeon's system, and will probably progress this year.
Let's all take a step back and remember that it isn't easy coming from high school ball to college, and that many freshman struggle at times. This is not to belittle the future that our incoming freshman have, but let's give them a year to get acclimated to college ball, Turgeon's system and college in general.
