Obviously with the collapse towards the end of the season and having Maryland finish at 16-14, this leaves the Terps at-large chances at 0. So in order for Maryland to go dancing this March, they will need to rekindle some 2004 magic in order to do so. Is this possible, I think yes consider the current cast of Terps. The key ingredient a team needs to make a run in a conference tournament is a scorer and Maryland has that in Stoglin, obviously. Stogs will be the player that everyone keys in on to stop Maryland, which I dont think Stogs is going to be the deciding factor if Maryland does make a run. I believe the three players that can push Maryland to a serious run at the Tourney Title are Padgett, Mosley and Faust.
Padgett, is key for one reason and one reason only, BALANCE. Maryland this year has not had good inside and outside balance. Padgett has come a long way from the beginning of the year and light years from last season. It is key that Padgett gets the ball down low and either converts layups or close range shots OR get the opponents post players in foul trouble. If the latter happens, Padgett will most definitely need to convert on the foul line.
Mosley, has come out of his shell the past couple of weeks and started to become the player everyone hoped he would be after his Freshman year. Mosley has become a scoring threat and has inherited the responsiblity to take and hit crucial and timely shots. Mosley does everything good and now that he has elevated his offensive game, he has become a weapon.
Now to Mr. Faust. The kid who couldnt hit the backboard from downtown earlier in the season is now shooting 50% in the last half of ACC play. Faust has freshman moments during games which is expected, especially considering he is playing a position at PG he has never played before in his life. If Faust continues to attack the defense and create shots and layups for himself and others, that is key for the Terps success.
To breakdown the road Maryland has to travel in Atlanta. Wake coming up first, is a should win game. Outside of two scorers Wake is pretty weak. Maryland should be able to win this one by double digits. Im not saying they will, but they should. Not going to far with this game. Then comes all mighty UNC. In my opinion the best team in the ACC by far and a Natty Title favorite. The key to this is limiting TYLER "I GO TO THE FOUL LINE MORE THEN ANYONE" ZELLER. If we force Henson, Barnes and Marshall to pick up the scoring this will allow MAryland to stay in the game. Not like its going to be easy, but Mike Scott pretty much beat us on Sunday by himself and Zeller did it last week. It's crucial to force others to score then Zeller. Not to mention Maryland must play there best game of the year. Then there is the rematch with Virginia, which in my opinion we match up well against. It's limiting Mike Scott will determine the outcome of that game. If everything plays out Duke would be the final opponent, which would be a tough feat given Duke will get every call known to man and then some in the finals. Just like UNC and UVA, its limiting the Plumlees and making Duke hit from outside.
Now, I know this is a lot of wishful thinking, but it can and has happened in the past. I would give Maryland a less then 5% chance on running the table. But Mark Turgeon has hit on something in the 2nd half of the UVA game. MT lit a fire under most players and had the best 2nd half of this year. Granted Stogs needs to be economic in his scoring meaning as close to 50% shooting as possible, Faust and Mosley need to limit the turnovers and the team as a whole must hit their FOUL SHOTS!!! I hope this weekend is special.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS WEEKEND. DOES MARYLAND HAVE IT IN THEM? WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN FOR MARYLAND TO BE STANDING ON SUNDAY? WHO ARE THE KEY PLAYERS TO PUSH MARYLAND ON TOP? PLEASE CONTRIBUTE!!!
