I was up early and happen to come across the NCAA Wrestling coverage on Espn News. Unfortantely Marylands Josh Asper fell in the National Semifinals or Final Four. It was a great match and Asper was the better wrestler, Lehigh was the opponent and he did nothing but stall and try to get outside the circle to restart the wrestling. In wrestling you get penalized for stalling and the red finally gave his first warning with 3 seconds left in the last period. You ask why is this important, Asper lost 5-4 and had a chance in the last period to earn a 1 point escape, but because the Lehigh Wrestler was stalling this didnt allow Asper the chance to escape.
This doesn't take anything away from Asper and his chance for a third place finish at 165 weight class. I also bring the fact Asper was selected for the pigtail match with gave him an additional match that no one else had to wrestle other then his first opponent. Bottom line Asper got hosed by the selection committee when the 2nd ranked wrestler all year got a 7 seed because of one late loss and was given the pigtail match. Not to mention the poor officiating in the Semifinals.
Good thing Asper is a Junior and will have another season to win it all. GO TERPS!
