Dan Hellie of NBC4 in DC is reporting that Danny O'Brien is indeed leaving Maryland. Apparently O-Lineman Max Garcia is also leaving. Hellie says both met with Edsall today.

There is a lot of questions about all of this, especially the 800 lb "why was DOB hosting the #8 recruit in the country if he was transferring" one. More to come shortly.

Until then...wow.

Yikes

All the positive news coming in and now this. Too good to be true. Edsall Dreadful.

Is this out of nowhere? I ask because DOB just hosted Diggs, did he not?

Wow

This will screw us with Diggs too

Worst timing in the world

If this is really the case DOB lost a lot of respect from me. Not from the stand point of leaving MD, thats a decision he needs to make for himself. …… But this is pretty much giving a big F-U to your team. We have the most historic recruit in decades on campus and you are his host. Why accept that if you think/know you are transferring? He could have told the coach he wasnt interested. I really hope this wasnt a matter of him wanting premier seats for the bball game.

by Charlotte NC Terp on Feb 8, 2012 3:56 PM EST reply actions

I Am Sure Danny Would Rather Not Leave

No, I don’t think all those selfish things apply here with Danny. He would stay if he had faith in the program. He was intensively involved in the program, and gave much to it. To leave now must be so disruptive for him. Danny apparently made a judgment about the health of this FB program, and wanted a healthier one. Danny must be at least as sad to leave his teammates as any of us are to see him go. Good luck, Danny, wherever you land—and much success to you.

Getting seats to a BB game did not play into this either! Not a casual decision for Danny, I am sure.

im not that surprised/pissed

honestly CJB had a better overall season than DOB last year. The Diggs thing does confuse me

Ugh

Terrible, terrible news. “Stefon, you should come to Maryland. It’s awesome. OBTW, I’m leaving, and the other guy can’t throw. Enjoy!”

Edsall

Get him the F out. Fire him now.

by terpskin on Feb 8, 2012 3:57 PM EST reply actions

Is this real?

Never heard of this guy, but assume he’s legit.

3 things if this is really real:

1. The Fire Edsall bandwagon should be back on track, and I feel like I’m going to be right back on it.
2. Why the hell did he host Stefon Diggs?
3. Best of luck to DOB. If he felt like he had to abandon the sinking ship that is Terps football, that’s his call and I hope he succeeds wherever he goes.

Hoping this can’t be true.

He's a 20 year old college kid

I doubt he knew for sure whether he was going to transfer or not last weekend. I’m sure he was thinking about it but I’m also sure he did his best to be a good host and convince Diggs to come to UMD. My anger at DOB hosting Diggs would be directed to Edsall, who had to know that DOB was considering transferring (since DOB said he was) and still let DOB host Diggs.

by srabin16 on Feb 8, 2012 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

At 20 years old, it’s not difficult to wait 3 more days.

If DOB was the only reason Diggs was coming

Diggs would change his mind once DOB said he was transferring anyways. And Maryland would let Diggs out, even if he had signed his LOI, because if you don’t do that it kills recruiting. So DOB’s timing on his decision has zero impact on Diggs coming to Maryland or not.

by srabin16 on Feb 8, 2012 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not saying he is the only reason, but the fact that our other QB is a run style QB, hurts a lot. And there is no telling what Diggs would or wouldn’t do after he committed.

Totally agree on both counts. I’m just saying that if Diggs was only coming to play at Maryland to play with DOB, then it wouldn’t matter when he announced he was leaving, Diggs wouldn’t play a down here. Hopefully Diggs still wants to come to Maryland, but my slim hopes are getting slimmer.

by srabin16 on Feb 8, 2012 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

That would only be true

if DOB was good enough to be the QB at UF or tOSU, which he’s not.

Vanderbilt

If he’s staying in D1A, then hes going to Vanderbilt, but I can see him going down a level to keep his two years… Makes me wish Tyler Smith would come back

Some additional info

I heard this from a source I have about a week or two ago. I asked why DOB would be hosting Diggs if that was the case and they then said DOB hadn’t made his decision and would decide by July 1. So I can’t understand why DOB hosted Diggs, unless they knew he really had no interest in Maryland.

Blindsided

Did not see that one coming

by lockwood11j on Feb 8, 2012 4:00 PM EST reply actions

so if i understand correctly

Were going to lose our top QB and the most important recruit Maryland has had in years. Compounded by a 2-10 season with a coach who wasn’t that great to begin with. Not to mention multiple sports being cut due to the difficulties of a struggling football program that was supposed to bring a new level of excitement and revenue to the school. Screw firing edsall, get Anderson out first.

Mind boggling...

the fact that O’Brien would voluntarily host the biggest recruit we are going after, and then two days before that recruit is to make his college choice do this?

I will never forgive O’Brien…

The only thing that would save O'Brien in my eyes...

is if he told Diggs he wasn’t staying (and that Maryland was still a great place to be) but the reason he was leaving was because he wanted to go to a Master’s program elsewhere. That is the only thing that could save O’Brien in my eyes.

Children should be seen and not heard.

by CharlesDriesell on Feb 8, 2012 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

to give everyone some perspective

DOB is graduating this spring in only 3 years. He will then have the opportunity to go to a grad school elsewhere and play out his remaining 2 seasons of eligibility without missing any time. Sad to see him go and makes it even weirder that i’m in a class with him

by formerlyknownasjinsookim on Feb 8, 2012 4:05 PM EST reply actions

Transfer rule

I think he can only play one additional season after transferring under that rule; I’m sure someone here has looked it up.

by lockwood11j on Feb 8, 2012 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

This is what I thought too

That if you had graduated, you could transfer to another FBS school only if your original school doesn’t offer a major that the new one does. And like you said, that it was for one year, not two. Although I’m not sure how many circumstances there have been that someone has graduated with two years of eligibility left, so I’m not 100% sure.

by FeartheTurtle2002 on Feb 8, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

yeah i know about the major having to be one not offered at ur university rule

i’m not so sure about he 1 year rule however. As you said this is a very rare circumstance because we rarely ever see an athlete capable of graduating in 3 years who also happened to have redshirted his first

by formerlyknownasjinsookim on Feb 8, 2012 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

Now if Diggs goes elsewhere (which was always fairly likely)

this looks like a big reason whether it was or not. Where’s BB with his transfer count anyway?

by Sephtical on Feb 8, 2012 4:07 PM EST reply actions

DOB

Sad on many levels. No sure why he would decide this today but Edsall should have known better than to hook up a huge recruit with a team leader who was conflicted about whether or not to stay. I guess at least we don’t have to waste any time checking out Diggs’ decision on Friday.

by terpentime on Feb 8, 2012 4:12 PM EST reply actions

Not upset with DOB

If he wanted to screw the team he would have done this right before signng day. Edsall is a fool and his program is rudderless. He says he has a plan but what is it? He has already turned over his OC and DC. And please….it Anderson made him hire Crwoton then were is Edsall’s so called sytem and principles?

Diggs was never coming.

by HP81Terp on Feb 8, 2012 4:16 PM EST reply actions

Sick to my Stomach

As soon as we get some positive momentum going we get the rug yanked from under us. Shame on Edsall for having a guy even considering transferring host the top recruit we had on our board this year.
Also FU Danny O’Brien – all we heard was what a great leader and student you were then you pull this crap right before Diggs is set to commit. Hope you do nothing wherever you end up. Oh by the way – you have 0 chance at an NFL career

by KugTerp on Feb 8, 2012 4:17 PM EST reply actions

Not saying he was picking us

No inside info but I imagine after this debacle our chance is now 0.

by KugTerp on Feb 8, 2012 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

That's what I figured

But honestly I really don’t think Diggs was coming here, and if he doesn’t DOB leaving has little to do with it, in my opinion.

by PhillyTerp on Feb 8, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Hey

fact is after the Clemson game, we all assumed he had lost the job for good anyway….

by vaterp9 on Feb 8, 2012 4:18 PM EST reply actions

Up to him

If he leaves, I wish him all the best. He did some great things for the University and I’m sure he will go on to do good things elsewhere.

I can understand the fan reaction, but MD still has at least one semi-experienced quarterback on the roster and two freshman that look pretty good (I wouldn’t be surprised to see them add a JUCO quarterback now).

And, I know people kept talking about the pro-style offense that Lockley brings, but it’s not. It’s a spread and I’m sure DOB factored that into his decision. If it makes sense for him to leave, then I wish him all the best.

by Charles2 on Feb 8, 2012 4:20 PM EST reply actions

Yup

Cant fault DOB for not wanting to play another year in another version of the spread …. he is a pro style guy and its his best shot at nfl too…. He’s only got one shot at this in his life and to blame him for leaving is silly and immature… screaming at him like some in this thread seriuosly makes YOU the @ssh0le. he is a kid with one shot at a dream – and his chances are shittier here then elsewhere, by NO FAULT of his own.

good luck DOB, sorry MD screwed with your dreams…

by vaterp9 on Feb 8, 2012 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

Can we be honest, DOB wasn't what we thought he was

He wasn’t that great his freshman year, most of his stats and good throws were to Torrey Smith. Otherwise, he struggled. Then last year, sure the offense didn’t suit him all that great and the talent level wasn’t what it was around him minus Torrey and Da’Rel, but he was terrible last year. When he did have a clean pocket and an open receiver, he would still have many errant throws. And it wasn’t about the scheme, because it’s easier to throw out of the shotgun than it is out from underneath center.

All in all, I wish him the best and hope he does succeed where ever he decides to go, he’s a good dude. But if anyone thinks he’s going to be the next Russell Wilson you’re crazy. It was reported a couple weeks ago that CJ was likely the starter heading into spring camp as it was.

DOB leaving isn’t that big of a deal other than for the potential implications with Diggs. Even then, if CJ was the leader in the coaches minds, I’d bet you that Locksley had the presence of mind to tell Diggs that. DOB could’ve just been Diggs’ recruiter or buddy or whatever just because he really did love Maryland and they wanted that to rub off on Diggs.

However Garcia leaving is huge. He was really good last year at LT and there’s no clear replacement off the top of my head.

by FeartheTurtle2002 on Feb 8, 2012 4:30 PM EST reply actions

And when I say this

That doesn’t mean I don’t believe in Danny, because I do and believed he would be our starter this year and perform better than last. He had improving to do, but I thought he could. But like I said, he isn’t this savior that some make him out to be and based upon last year, CJ outplayed him.

by FeartheTurtle2002 on Feb 8, 2012 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know if CJ outplayed him. (I think it was more of a draw.) But I agree with most of your points. He was a starting QB, but he looked dreadful at times last year, like most of the team, and frankly, didn’t look THAT great until late his freshman year, even with all those weapons. Losing your starter is always a PITA, but it’s not like we are talking about 5* talent walking out the door. We’ll be fine.

This bodes well...

I Imagine I’m not alone in trying, really hard, to not get discouraged with Edsall, I don’t want to turn on the guy after one season. But this might be the last straw. If DOB kills it elsewhere, I might resort to crying myself to sleep for a few weeks.

Obviously, a college kid making a decision like this can always been a wild and weird process, and who can blame DOB for wanting to escape this quagmire, but this just disheartening. And it does make the whole Diggs thing a big awkward and unlikely, obviously.

Weird time to transfer

When we have a pro-style offense OC in Locks. If Crowton was still on board, I could understand O’Brien not thinking Maryland was the right place for him, but just when things are starting to pick up, he leaves? Makes no sense to me.
