Huge dilemma for Duke game this Saturday!

So, my wife's cousin is married to Duke men's basketball assistant coach, Steve Wojo-however-you-spell-it. I married into an extended family who are now the biggest bandwagon Duke fans (not just the Wojo's inlaws, but the rest of the teenage boy cousins, etc.) that it kills me to go to family functions and hear about how great Duke is all night.

Anywho, I've been begging my wife's cousin for a couple of years now for some tickets to the Maryland game at Duke, and this year is my (and my brothers) lucky year. She got me four family tickets RIGHT BEHIND the Duke bench for the game this weekend. We have to be in our seats 10 minutes before the game starts because we have to access our seats through where the Duke coaching staff sits.

Knowing what a HUGE Maryland fan I am, the cousin has been very hesitant to give me these tickets (rightfully so) becuase they can't have the opposing team's fans sitting in those seats. So these tickets are conditional -- we can't wear any red or cheer for Maryland if we sit in these seats. Understandable, but how in the world can any of us expect to not root for Maryland AT Cameron Indoor? ... besides the fact they might get run out of the building if we can't contain Plumlee again.

Star-divide

So they question I pose to you is: What would you do if you were in my situation? Knowing that I'm going to be respectful and honorable to my cousins request.

Should I relish the experience of sitting right behind the Duke bench and keep myself and my passionate brothers quite and refrained? Would this be considered a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to see the great coach K at work first-hand? I mean, rats carry diseases so we don't want to be too close, ya know?

Or, should I try and trade my tickets to Dookies who are in/adjacent to the Maryland fan section and go buck-nutty?

I'm coming all the way from Salt Lake City for this and I want to make the most of it, as far as game experience goes and would love your input and what to do, knowing I'm leaning towards seating in the given seats beacuse I want to respect the very kind gesture by my cousin.

By the way, I have red hair, so I will techinically be wearing red and supporting my Terps no matter what. They can't take that away from me, dammit. So take that Duke Nation!!! Look for me on TV!

Any BBQ recommendations to celebrate the Terps win after the game?

Trade

I know for me, as I’m sure it is for you, I couldn’t not root like hell for the Terps no matter who gave me the tickets. So out of respect for the family, I’d trade them and sit somewhere else if given the chance.

I don’t think I’d be able to sit for two halves and not cheer for the Terps. I’d probably trade my seats!!!

Be respectful

Wear a duke shirt or blue colored polo. Take in the experience and again be respectful as possible. He is taking a big risk by letting you do this, as you could rattle his team and have Coach K VERY upset with him (remember its his boss and that is more important then fandom tbh).
It is a nice gesture on his part return it in kind. I know you as a MD fan want to scream for the terps, but you can’t. It would also be very rude to trade them. You can prob clap for the Terps tho. Few people get such an experience, especially at such a storied place as Duke’s Mecca- don’t give up those seats!

I completely agree.

It’s more about respect to my family than MD pride, I think. Wow, it’s going to be hard! My bors and I have already thought about what to do – we’ll stand up when everyone else does, we just won’t be cheering.

But when Faust posterizes Plumlee, we’ll have some intense internal high-fives!

I’m excited for he Cameron experience.

disagree

you can be respectful without wearing a blue shirt. That is just ridiculous. Thats like saying you need to stupid cheers when other fans do, chant at maryland players, and just act like total assholes for two hours. You represent maryland, but do so respectfully and not within ear shot of K.

by noam23 on Feb 8, 2012 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

Oh yeah ...

Definitely NOT wearing a blue shirt.

by jamesalf on Feb 8, 2012 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

Don't wear a duke shirt. I have a lot of family I married into that are WVU alums.

When they give me great seats to the wvu umd game in motown i usually wear just regular clothes and root for the terps but very respecfully. Wearing a duke shirt is flat out embarrasing.

If you wear a Duke shirt your MD card should be REVOKED. PLAIN AND SIMPLE

I wear a red button up that says im formal but Im hear to party though….

Best part is

Austin Rivers (still a recruit at the time) is just out of frame watching it happen

Accept the tickets behind the bench

But absolutely lie to your cousin when agreeing you wont wear red and wont root for Maryland. Wear a Red Terps shirt underneath your sweater/sweatshirt/jacket and once you take your seat and right before tip, take it off and unveal your attire and root your ass off against those fuckers at Puke!!!

Wear a modest blue shirt and no red.

And once we pull off the upset victory, pull off all of your clothes and reveal a REDMAN suit.

Or at least a Terps shirt.

by kckb8 on Feb 8, 2012 2:02 PM EST reply actions

LIE!

And at the end of the game rip off your clothes revealing your true colors and scream GO TERPS! It’s what “V” would have done. Blow up Parliament my boy!

Fear the Turgle!

Do not trade those seats

I’ve been to a few Redskins games in Philadelphia. I don’t recall wearing any sort of Redskin-thematic clothing, but I openly cheered for them and no one really seemed to mind all that much.

I would most definitely not trade seats behind any bench. Its a totally different game when viewed from that close; seeing and hearing what goes on inside the huddle and on the bench is a truly unique experience.

If you end up having a lot to cheer about inside Cameron, then I’d call that a high-quality problem.

I've actually

been in this same exact situation. I wore a shirt with a small Maryland logo. Not obvious but it wasn’t blue..I would never wear blue to that game. Terps ended up winning and I celebrated like a mad man..needless to say I have never been given those tickets again by my contact…but hey, I’m 1-1 at Cameron!!!

by terpskin on Feb 8, 2012 3:09 PM EST reply actions

While I have not been in your exact dilemma...I have sat front row behind the crazies.

I sort of copped out and wore a grey Maryland shirt with a red hat. So I didn’t stand out completely, nonetheless, the crazies were aware of presence. So just live it up, take your beating, and wear a black Maryland shirt or whatever.

As for eating afterwards, I recommend Tobacco Road Sports Bar near the Durham Bulls ballpark. Not necessarily a BBQ place but they do have a delicious BBQ sandwich. Haven’t had a bad thing to eat there yet. Good people, good food.

clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose!

Wear a Red MD shirt underneath a jacket

Once the game starts, say its hot and take off your jacket… and then start rooting like crazy for UMD.. theyre not gonna kick you out or anything

by Juan Dixon on Feb 8, 2012 3:47 PM EST reply actions

Troll dookies everywhere

wear a blue and white shirt that says fuck duke (or duck fuke) and sit behind the bench where espn will show you in the background of each coach k shot.

it will be subtle but most of the ppl by you will not pay attention to a blue shirt and youll get the message out to the world

by t.shug on Feb 8, 2012 3:53 PM EST reply actions

Wear all red

If they give you shit, you can just remind them about all the times they’ve said that we’re bad fans for giving them shit. Also, you can ask them why they care since we aren’t supposed to be rivals.

Similar thing happened to me...

A dookie ‘friend’ of mine gave me a ticket to the 2001 Final Four game MD v. dook.

I traded the ticket for a ticket in the MD section…Great Experience…almost a great game…but, in fact, the game sucked…I am really glad I was with my brethren and not the farging inbred dookies at the end.

So, if you can, try and trade the seats…

by Zol on Feb 8, 2012 4:11 PM EST reply actions

ok, i would just take the tickets, yet trade with someone

I know for me personally, i got every single one of UMD’s home games, and watch all their away games (boys and girls). and it would kill me to have to NOT wear red, or contain my joy and excitement, when terrell hits a 3, or alex len blocks a shot. I couldn’t imagine myself not screaming up and down for joy after we hit a good play. YOU have to switch with someone.

Plus it’s always been a dream of mine to go to an away game and get booed by their fans because i’m cheering for UMD lol (call me crazy, but i love my school lol)

It was nice of your cousin to get you tickets, and i can understand u wanting to sit close. but if you can contain your UMD excitement, then go for it. But don’t you DARE wear blue

by terp10 on Feb 8, 2012 4:25 PM EST reply actions

wear red

Punch rat face , charge the court and take a dump in mid court. As for family, they are dookies so good riddance! Just my 2 cents as a red blooded terp.

It's Puke home of the Dookies

So, either puke of rat face or dookie on the devil

if coach k has a book

Just sit there reading it out loud the whole game.

Red?

I’m feelin a gold rush t-shirt. Problem solved

by ValiantVasquez on Feb 8, 2012 6:26 PM EST reply actions

All I Know

Is that I personally, could NEVER go to a Duke/MD game and NOT wear my MD gear or show my MD support. If it were me, I wouldn’t go, regardless of the seating arrangements. I’d rather pass and ask for crappier seats, just so I can show my support. Fuck Duke. But, that’s just me.

by Cisco Violator on Feb 8, 2012 8:58 PM EST reply actions

You have to respect your family member and rember that Coach K is his boss!

Wear black and white, both legitimate MD colors. Cheer and fist pump quietly for your team then put on your red MD hat and give the Dukies no end of shit after we win.

by retlag on Feb 8, 2012 9:29 PM EST reply actions

If you're loudly cheering for UMD behind Duke's bench

You will be kicked out, no doubt.

You have to respect your family, so like others have said, wear Black/White/Gray. You can do subtle fist pumps and quiet clapping, but any more than that and you will probably be told to stop or get out.

by aholla30 on Feb 8, 2012 10:07 PM EST reply actions

I think you should do your best to trade the seats.

by discuit on Feb 9, 2012 11:23 AM EST reply actions

i am going too

I’ll be there, one of my friends has an uncle who works for Duke, and gave us (I’m an Alum and my buddy who is a senior) the tickets. If I were you I’d wear white, and not cheer for Duke. In the 1/100 chance that we win, rush the court, I will too, I’d gladly have my first arrest be at Cameron.

by nyterp on Feb 9, 2012 12:00 PM EST reply actions

Tell us what you wear so we can cheer for you on bench too!

But seriously DONT f*ck this up- if you are respectful if MD and Duke play in big games down the road you could get tickets (tickets at comcast/duke games behind bench?)

by terpfan2011 on Feb 9, 2012 2:23 PM EST reply actions

wear an nba jersey of a maryland player

works if it’s blue so you’ll blend right in.
