Maryland Terrapins @ Clemson Tigers: The GameThread

Maryland Terrapins at Clemson Tigers, Feb 7, 2012 7:00 PM EST

Game tips at 7:00 on ESPNU. No kosher stream tonight that I know of, but as always I'm sure if you look in the right places you can find some streams of questionable legality, if that's your sort of thing.

Random, Baseless Prediction: There's another "why doesn't he play more?" performance from Mychal Parker. I'm feeling 5 points, a steal, three rebounds, and solid defense. The Mych bandwagon doubles afterwards.

Prediction: The real question here isn't "Will Maryland beat Clemson?" so much as it is "Has Maryland finally turned the corner?" Or, at least, that's the false choice with which I'll frame this section of the post. And my answer: not sure, but I think they have, so they gut out a close one. People start to talk about the NCAA Tournament again, perhaps foolishly.

Guessing game: Give me Terrell Stoglin's total of points plus made three pointers (21 points + 4 made threes = 25) with number of ill-advised, early-in-the-shot-clock three point attempts as the tiebreaker.

Ben, I know it's early and not likely, but just wondering..

How many ACC wins would you say we would need plus ACC tourney wins to have a strong shot at getting in? Is one win over Duke or UNC absolutely necessary to have any chance?

by dcsportsfanatic on Feb 7, 2012 5:11 PM EST reply actions

NCAAT?

We need a minimum of 8 wins in the Conference, and 3 wins in the ACCT to get a shot at the big dance.

We need to go 5-3 down the stretch, and other than BC, there are no easy wins left.

by 87Terp on Feb 7, 2012 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

78 is probably right, though a bit heavy on the ACCT

8 wins, plus at least 2 in the tourney. We’d be on the bubble.

by Ben Broman on Feb 7, 2012 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

NCSOS

Our NCSOS games were pretty lightweight this year. It has kept us in the upper reaches of the RPI/ Kenpom.

And the loss to Iona…..that was ugly. Although the ND win is looking better and better.

We need to split Va, beat FSU, and either Duke or UNC, and everyone else to have a shot at the bubble.

by 87Terp on Feb 7, 2012 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

Random, baseless prediction

Bryan Narcisse gets his rec specs knocked off by Pankey with 8 minutes left in the 2nd, which proves to be the critical turning point of the game. Terps proceed to get revved up and go on an 8-0 run to push their lead to double digits. Tanner Smith knocks down a few meaningless 3’s and we win by 7.

For Stogs: 27 points, 3 made 3’s (30). Tiebreaker: 4 chucks early in the shot clock.

by spivy on Feb 7, 2012 5:17 PM EST reply actions

If that prediction comes true

you better buy some lotto tickets tonight. Like the strategy of the unlikely prediction.

by Hardman on Feb 7, 2012 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

Man I hope they keep the momentum going

from the two previous games. I thought there was a real danger of a let down after all of the energy and heart the team put into the Miami comeback still resulted in a loss.

22 + 4 = 26, 2 bad 3s.

by Hardman on Feb 7, 2012 5:18 PM EST reply actions

29

26 points + 3 threes. 2 bad threes. Also, RBP, Pankey finally finishes a monster jam!!!

by bigsam20 on Feb 7, 2012 5:18 PM EST reply actions

34

29 pts. + 5 3’s. 4 bad 3’s but 2 go in.

RBP Len finishes 3 oops from Pe’, Stogs and Faust.

by terpsallday on Feb 7, 2012 5:21 PM EST reply actions

Is Young really going to D up Stogs?

Stogs is going to destroy him all game if that’s the case imo.

by spivy on Feb 7, 2012 5:23 PM EST reply actions

Young

looks 5’8 on a good day. He’s super quick off the dribble, and I haven’t seen enough of Clemson to comment on his D, but Stogs is going to have such an easier time pulling up on him as opposed to someone 6’1 or bigger. I’m assuming Clemson is going to lean heavily on zone to counter Stogs, but again, I could be wrong as I don’t know much about them on the defensive side of the ball.

by spivy on Feb 7, 2012 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

35

30 points with 5 threes. Tiebreaker of 3 too-early shots.

RBP: Len has more blocks than fouls.

by broadcastterp on Feb 7, 2012 5:23 PM EST reply actions

I hate ESPNs media selling strategy!

This game is on ESPNU, but not ESPN3 and I can’t get legitimate access to either outlet without a serious expenditure of money and effort.

35 points on 7 3s… seriously

by mdterps150 on Feb 7, 2012 5:37 PM EST reply actions

26 (23 pts + 3 made three), three chucks

Maryland wins this game if Len has a double-double (points and rebounds).

by JuanBlaze on Feb 7, 2012 5:46 PM EST reply actions

Any other terps fans bet on sports at all?

I put a dime on us at 9. Cant imagine us losing by more than 9 in any way shape or form barring injuries or a collapse. I think the Terps wins a nail biter by three. God help the team that Stoglin shoots 50% against. Its bound to happen here eventually.

by Keith Pivonski on Feb 7, 2012 5:51 PM EST reply actions

i am right there with you, dime on the terps +9. also put dollar on two team parlay Terps and Cyclones for fun. good luck.

Game should be available through WatchESPN.

Since it’s an ESPNU national broadcast, there shouldn’t be any blackout restrictions for those trying to watch online.

You can watch ESPU on WatchESPN only if you have FiOS or Bright House Networks. They allow you to stream ESPN anything on your computer or mobile device

Len

Would like to know Turge’s reasoning behind leaving Len on the bench for so long during the latter portion of the 1st half. He has 2 fouls, blah, blah, blah. Pankey is ineffective on offense and doesn’t alter any shots on the defensive side. It’s critical for Len’s development that he gets as much playing time down the stretch of this season imo.

There's definitely no one in his ear, that's just who he is.

I’ve been calling him Charlie Adam for awhile now, and anyone who watches the EPL will know what I’m talking about. He’s gotta learn when to go for the crazy dish, and when to dial it back and pick his battles.

by Ben Broman on Feb 7, 2012 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

C'mon Ben

So you’re saying he should not drop dimes because the players around him SUCK!?

*All Terp Everything*

by asianterp on Feb 7, 2012 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

He should be smarter about his passes, yes.

Some of it is a little crazy. A 100mph pass to Mychal Parker isn’t going to work. Nor is 15-foot bounce pass through traffic to Berend Weijs. It doesn’t matter that Pe’ is good enough to get the ball there – it takes two to complete a pass. So we can sit here and chuck awesome dimes to people who can’t catch them, or we can try to figure out something that’ll actually work.

by Ben Broman on Feb 7, 2012 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry Ben

That’s how the kid plays. You make him tenative and he plays awfully. How about people like Pankey and Weijs step the fuck up. Don’t fault PeShon for dropping dimes is all I’m saying.

Because they can't "step up"

It’s hands, what are you going to do? That’s not going to improve anytime soon. I wish he could play that way, but it isn’t working and I’d rather score points.

by Ben Broman on Feb 7, 2012 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Despite the sloppiness

We are outplaying these guys hands down – so it’s ours to win. Half of our points have been from dunks or free throws and we’re just showing more overall intensity and rhythm than Clemson.

by MD2006 on Feb 7, 2012 7:54 PM EST reply actions

Pe

Anyone giving him grief needs to wise up. He has had about 4 awesome passes that were not converted!! So anyone criticizing his ast:to ratio needs to realize that he is droppin’ dimes, but no one is converting. That’s possible pts that his teammates left out there! Pankey twice, Weijs 1 and another I forget.

Well next time you play PG

I challenge you to stop in the flow of the game, think “Wait, that’s Berend Weijs, if I pass this too hard, he won’t catch it” and then make a decent play.

by turtlepower on Feb 7, 2012 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

You have to know your supporting personnel....thats part of being a PG...

If one of your supporting personnel cant catch good passes…..then don’t pass to them

If Cleare and Layman have good hands...

And start catching all his bullet passes, don’t go saying that Pe’ all of a sudden got better… he just got the supporting cast. I think Pe’ is getting a bad rap just from people not being able to catch.

by Nihonterp on Feb 7, 2012 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

I would not say that!

I think he can play well with people who can catch his quick passes….but he has to know when to dial it down for people w/ not as great hands like Weijs, etc…..thats all I;m saying

by TurtleShel716 on Feb 7, 2012 8:05 PM EST up reply actions

ABSURD!

We all just spouted about how they need to share the ball more and trust one another and yet you are sitting here saying NO ONE SHOULD PASS???!!! WTF is wrong with our fanbase?

Read my post.... I didn't say they shouldn't pass to them

I said Peshon shouldn’t be throwing bullet passes that some people can catch..others cant…Im not attacking I’m jsut saying you can’t throw the same pass to everyone

Question

Have you guys ever played basketball? You don’t alter the way you play and analyze what happens on the floor. It is not geometry, it is basketball. Pe knows how to play one way. Dropping dimes. So if those people don’t know how to convert he should stop? He should alter the way he plays? He should lightly lob the ball to Pankey and Weijs? BS

No

You do not tell the PG to stop passing. If anything, our problem is not enough passing. Isn’t that what Turge is always getting on Stogs for?

Maybe the problem isn’t our guards’ passing but just hands… Turge needs to pull out a tennis ball machine in practice or something.

That last 10 minutes

A LOT was his fault

As much as I defended Pe the 1st Half

He was pretty bad in the 2nd.

Still, he should have finished the game with like 7 assists

A win is a win boys.

We knew this was going to be a tough year. Let’s be happy with a road win and keep supporting this team.

by CarolinaTerp on Feb 7, 2012 9:09 PM EST reply actions

lucky

with the missed freethrows, moseley’s mental gaffe ,and pe’s all around poor play we are lucky to win this one.

by terpinva on Feb 7, 2012 9:10 PM EST reply actions

The missed free throws late were evened out by some key Clemson misses too

by discuit on Feb 7, 2012 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

Shouldn't it have been MD ball?

Mosely was already out of bounds so the ball was technically thrown out by Clemson…did the refs get that wrong or am I wrong?

by goterps32 on Feb 7, 2012 9:12 PM EST reply actions

but wouldn't that just mean the ball is out of bounds to the terms at that spot?

Mosely never had possession of the ball since he was out of bounds….so is that the same as Clemson just throwing the ball out of bounds, and therefore MD ball?

by goterps32 on Feb 7, 2012 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that it should have been our ball. How can the ruling be that Clemson threw the ball out of bounds on an illegal inbounds pass but they get the ball back? Doesn’t make sense.

by MDTerp2010 on Feb 7, 2012 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

obviously mosley watched the super bowl a little too closely

he was just trying to do a mario manningham impression at the end of the game

If Only We Had That Killer Instinct

This team would be good

but no

It Felt Like A Loss

We were up like 15. No killer instinct. I just don’t understand how it is so hard to play exactly how you were playing the last couple minutes.

These nailbiters are actually exciting as a fan.

What, are we gonna win a Natty this year or something? Hell no, enjoy the ride(ups and downs), and prepare for one hell of a future once the horses arrive.

Sidebar…mancrush on Stogs grows by the game.

by 1 proud terp on Feb 7, 2012 9:14 PM EST reply actions

Given all the drama...

…this was a much-needed win. I feel like the end of game mistakes can be fixed. So even if we almost gave the game away, it’s still a step in the right direction.

by JuanBlaze on Feb 7, 2012 9:15 PM EST reply actions

If you haven't noticed

This was like every other game except Stogs had a great game. There is no improvement that I’ve seen. In fact Mosley might be getting worse with that last second play.

by SeattleTerp on Feb 7, 2012 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

Well 16 pts, 4 assists, 2 steals and only ONE big Turnover

So really a pretty good game for Sean…I’ll take it except for that one bonehead play

by cerratos on Feb 7, 2012 9:20 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

no doubt...

without mosley we’d have lost by 11 with stogs getting 30 points.

by nmcvicker03 on Feb 7, 2012 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

c'mon

Mose was good most of the game. Granted, that was an f’up of epic proportions but 16 points I’ll take every game from him.

Watched last 10 seconds of the game

I am glad that my fiance didn’t let me watch anymore after I broke my hand during the UNC game. I might have broken my other hand watching the lead slip away in this one.

This might have been the best thing possible for us, though

Really, isn’t this the best possible outcome since we play @Duke next?

We got the win, but Turgeon will definitely have the attention of the team leading up to Duke since they played so poorly down the stretch, and we won’t be overconfident (is that possible?) heading into Cameron.

I’m probably reaching a little but close wins, for a young and inexperienced team, are usually the best way to do it.

by aholla30 on Feb 7, 2012 9:21 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

and nice to have a tiny little bit of momentum going into cameron

by terpskin on Feb 7, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

I don't see how

they could be overconfident after this stretch of games. They are improving, but are young and the “one step forward, two steps back, three steps forward . . .” type progression is not so unusual for such a young team. We do have holes that can only be fixed by a talent influx, but all in all I pleased with the effort and progression.

by RaleighTerp on Feb 7, 2012 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

That "3 steps forward"

would be real nice in Durham.

I'll take it

That was way too close though… it feels like we were trying to lose that one more than we held on for the win.

I'm Mad I DVR'd that game

I’m going to erase it immediately, or just watch the first 25minutes

can't believe

I fooled myself into thinking we’d get an easy win when we went up 14. Smdh.

My favorite part ...

was the part where we didn’t lose.

Future PG

What kind of a game does Seth Allen have? Is he a PG or SG? Sometimes I wonder if Peshon is the man we want manning the point…. he’s not much of a 3 point threat, and after today, it’s clear he isn’t that stellar of a ball handler or that steady of a free point shooter. How can a PG be so bad in shooting free throws??

by Terplaw on Feb 7, 2012 9:47 PM EST reply actions

Beat Duke, and NCAAs are a legitimate possibility

If we can beat the Blue Devils, and the season ended on Saturday, would we be in the tournament?

Resume would look like this:

15-9, 5-5 in ACC.

Good wins: @ No. 10 Duke, neutral v. Notre Dame
Bad losses: none

Maybe?

Since the season doesn’t end there, a win @Duke could really get things going. After Duke, we have Boston College at home, which is about as close to a guaranteed win as we will get this year. Then, it’s @UVA. Beat Duke, beat BC, and all of a sudden we’re 16-9, 6-5 in the ACC heading into what would be a HUGE game.

Anything is possible at this point.
