Star Local Receiver Stefon Diggs Making Announcement Friday, Televised on CSN

via l.yimg.com

Ladies and gentlemen, we are full in the throes of Stefon Diggs Week. His visit to Maryland last Saturday seemed to go pretty well, and now we're simply biding time until his decision goes public. Which, unless anything unexpected goes down, will happen at 10:00 on Friday, televised live on CSN.

As expected, Diggs is choosing between Auburn, Florida, Ohio State, and Maryland - the link also listed Cal, but Tosh Lupoi went to Washington and they didn't get a visit - and all four of those teams can claim to have been considered media leaders at some point. The Terps got the last visit, though, and their time in the media spotlight is coming now. I'll say now what I've said all along: when all four schools think they have good chances, which is the case here, odds are that Diggs either doesn't know what he wants to do yet or has been telling people what they want to hear, which means this is all guesswork. Regardless, Maryland has a real chance at pulling this off, and that's saying something.

And by the way: the fact that he's announcing on the local television station, as opposed to going on ESPN or doing it at Good Counsel, might mean something, right? I know we got burnt this way before with Antonio Logan-El, but I'll take whatever I can.

Anyway, if you're jonesing for Diggs - and I know I am; in fact, I'm more excited about Diggs on Friday than I am about Clemson tonight or Duke on Saturday - these highlights made the rounds last weekend and are predictably sensational. If you haven't seen Diggs play yet, give 'em a whirl.

It'll be Ohio State.

Because Maryland has offended the football gods and our punishment has not even truly begun yet.

I want Diggs more than the Harrisons

I know I’m in the major minority and probably just committed some form of heresy against many Terps fans and I appologize. But I’m more of a football guy as it is, and I think that the impact that Diggs can potentially have on our football program would likely outweigh what the Harrisons could do for our basketball program. I couldn’t be more excited for Friday night.

by FeartheTurtle2002 on Feb 7, 2012 3:57 PM EST reply actions

Precisely

Not only could he have a huge impact on the next 2-3 recruiting classes, but he’s exactly what we haven’t had in years. This kid is absolutely electric with the ball in his hands and would make everyone in our offense better. And how much easier would it be to recruit at Good Counsel and the surrounding area with Zach Dancel and his father being apart of the program, and our future starting LT (Madaras), RB (Brown), and WR (Diggs) all at Maryland.

Better hands, better playmaking ability

Torrey had better speed, and route running.

by oriolekid on Feb 7, 2012 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

Right out of HS Diggs is better in every phase of the game than Torrey

And that’s not to hate on Torrey, but I saw several of his games at North Stafford when he was in HS and he was very good but not half the prospect Stefon is. Remember, Torrey was a QB in HS and his main claim to fame was playmaking ability and straightline speed; Diggs is better in both regards, and by the virtue of actually playing WR in high school has better hands and route running.

by Ben Broman on Feb 7, 2012 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

Yes

But they’re sort of two different players in my mind even though they play the same position. Torrey was more of a player you throw the ball up and watch him go get it. Diggs is a player you just get the ball in his hands and let him create magic.

Fear? I welcome it!

Whatever it takes to elevate this program to the next level…

by Raven Zey on Feb 7, 2012 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't be worried

Not necessarily because I don’t think he’ll do shady things from time to time, because honestly I don’t know whether he would or wouldn’t. More because pretty much every elite athletics program has people behind the scenes that straddle the line from time to time at the very least. I’m not saying I condone it and I’d prefer to be a 100% clean program, I’m just not sure how realistic it is to be one and be relevant all at the same time.

by FeartheTurtle2002 on Feb 7, 2012 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

I really think that we have some talent that we're overlooking...

Amb Etta Tawo and Levern Jacobs could turn into playmakers…don’t sleep on them.

by Raven Zey on Feb 7, 2012 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

That concern is always there

But 3 star prospects are so hit-or-miss. They could be fantastic, yes, or they could be another Quintin McCree. That potential is there with Diggs as well, but the risk of it is much lesser. In basketball, we don’t get the Harrisons, then we probably get someone like Rysheed Jordan who’s a five-star PG in his own right.

by Ben Broman on Feb 7, 2012 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

You can make the same argument for 5-Star players...

I think its all in how well they are coached up…to me if the player already has good measurables (height, weight, speed, etc.), and is coachable, then he will go as far as the coaching staff will take him. I don’t think its that hit or miss. Boise St. hasn’t recruited a 5-Star player in like 238795934579345 years, lol…but they are a good team every year, and they put players in the NFL.

by Raven Zey on Feb 7, 2012 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

Oh I know, I acknowledged that

But the risk of them bombing is much, much lower and the odds of them turning out great is much, much higher. Doesn’t mean that there’s no chance Diggs is awful and AET is a monster, just that such a scenario is unlikely.

by Ben Broman on Feb 7, 2012 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

No doubt...

I don’t think Diggs will be a bust at all…I just think the other two are going to be really good. But like you said, you never know.

by Raven Zey on Feb 7, 2012 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

They're fast, but they're no Stefon Diggs. Diggs is just amazing.

Jacobs’ little brother is someone I REALLY want to get though, he’s got world class speed. Doesnt Diggs also have a younger brother that supposed to be good? or am I wrong on that

by Maryland1206 on Feb 7, 2012 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

The football team needs a superstar player more now, then the basketball team does. We know Turge will be bringing in big names, and that this was supposed to be a "rebuilding year". The football team has become the butt of many jokes about the coaches, and awesome uniforms. We need to start the football renaissance quicker.

by umcp96 on Feb 7, 2012 4:11 PM EST reply actions

We're up against 3 storied football programs

Hopefully, Stefon can see that he would make a huge difference for the Terps, rather than being just another good roster player for the Gators, Tigers, or Hairless Nuts.

by Snappin Terp on Feb 7, 2012 4:11 PM EST reply actions

Diggs reminds me of Tavon Austin...

…except bigger. And we all know what Austin has done at West Virginia…landing Diggs would be a major coup.

by JuanBlaze on Feb 7, 2012 4:45 PM EST reply actions

Best comparison imo

Except Diggs has worldclass level cutbacks and juke moves.

aka he’s an elite playmaker.

by oriolekid on Feb 7, 2012 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

I want him

but he ain’t coming here. I saw it with my eyes at the UNC game.

haha

I hope I’m wrong really but I’m telling you, Diggs didn’t even give Edsall the time of day when Edsall went to go sit next to him.

Was it

a straight up dis or was there some small talk?

by hipphipphorray on Feb 7, 2012 5:16 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

No small talk

straight up walked by him. Edsall had the saddest look on his face like someone stole his lunch.

by terpskin on Feb 7, 2012 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

Because he walked away from Randy? Randy is very unimportant in this recruitment.

More important than Randy are: Mike Locksley, Bernie Dancel, Urban Meyer, Brent Pease, Trooper Taylor, and Ms. Diggs, just off the top of my head.

by Ben Broman on Feb 7, 2012 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

Well in that sense, yes, but Ms. Diggs has much more pull with Stefon than Randy does

I mean it’s weird to think that the head coach really doesn’t matter, but honestly the only one who does is Urban and that’s because he’s Urban. None of the other three matter a smidge in the big scheme of things when compared to their Locks, Troop, and Pease.

by Ben Broman on Feb 7, 2012 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

But if you're Diggs

and you’re at Florida-UK tonight, Muschamp walks over to you in the 2nd half and sits next to you, do you get up 5 seconds later without saying a word and walk away? I feel like if you want what he’s selling, you at least fake some interest and throw the guy a bone.

by terpskin on Feb 7, 2012 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't claim to know.

You’d think so, but I’d have thought the same about Randy. I do know, though, that when Charlie Weis left Florida, Diggs very nearly dropped them, the same as he wouldn’t have interest in MD if Locks wasn’t here.

by Ben Broman on Feb 7, 2012 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough

And maybe Diggs has been told by the guys that matter that Edsall is a dead man walking. I’m not trying to piss anyone off — only to give some insight into something I noticed.

by terpskin on Feb 7, 2012 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

dead man walking?

unless you knwo something we all don’t, he’ll be walking the grounds of College Park for at least 2 more years minimum barring a catastrophe, which, with the info we currently have, I’d bet won’t happen.

Off topic but not enough for a fan post

ESPN recently had an interview with Adam Breneman. It covered the usual things as far as recruiting goes, except he didn’t mention a list of top schools. However, this answer stuck out to me and made me think we have a pretty decent chance at getting the 5* TE.

ESPNHS: As you’ve piled up offers and information from all these coaches, have you started to think about what’s important to you?

Breneman: When I look at a school, there’s three aspects. I look at the school academically, I look at the football team and the offense I’d be playing in, and then I look at the school spiritually to see if these are the right guys for me. I’ve started to make some opinions in my mind, but I’m nowhere close to making a decision.

The only downside to the interview is hat they asked him what his favorite car was and his answer was a black Cadillac Escalade. cough…SEC…cough

Only problem with the first tweet

is that his announcement is at 10 PM and it will be louder than an 8.2 because all of College Park will be drunk lol

It looks like someone tweeted that at diggs, not that he said it. Unless that was the poin haha

by UMTerp2010 on Feb 7, 2012 7:34 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I think it's gonna be OSU,

I have no real basis for that, but Urban Meyer just gives me a bad feeling about the whole thing. It’d be the second potential steal by OSU (Spence), but heres to hoping I’m wrong.
