Nice Piece on Stoglin

On theACC.com. It gives a pretty cool breakdown on Stoglin's daily practice routines and has some good quotes. And it is always nice any time one of our Terps gets some publicity on a big scale.

Shooting

He better put up some better shooting numbers then he did vs. Miami.

oh im sorry

is 33 not enough for you? jeez people need to stop over analyzing him. if hes a chucker hes the best damn chucker i’ve seen in a while

I am probably the biggest Stoglin fan

However scoring 33 points while taking 30 shots is not that impressive. Just saying.

it wasnt his fault we lost

and i’ll say this over and over, when hes dribbling down the court and sees james “blackhole” padget in the post, Alex “not ready yet and no hands” Len, and Sean “actually Im really awesome but inconsistant” Mosley calling for the ball, but he knows he is quicker than whoever is guarding him and can score really whenever he wants, I would try and take the shot too

Stoglin wasn't quicker than the Miami guards

Was maybe the first time this year, but Miami’s backcourt was quicker. Love me some Stogs, but like gianterp said, I’d hope he put up 30+ on 30 shots.

If we had a Scott Wood, he could take the pressure off Stogs

Why do you think CJ Leslie can score so easily? Watched the NC St game yesterday, and CJ just struts up and down the court, chewing his gum and waiting for an NBA contract. Shows very little effort in his game. Glad we didn’t get him.

he has his moments of lackadaisical play

but he also has that effortless look when he’s playing hard. He was working hard in the game against us. I just think consistency will be his thing to work on for the end of this season. He needs at least one more year b4 the NBA imho.

Okay

Dont know why the extreme comments on mine. But apparently stating the obvious and truth people take to far.

terp3030 – 33 is enough, but shooting 4-14 from 3’s is extremely unacceptable. Also there is no “over analyzing” him, its a simple stat and its an awful stat, plain in simple. Yes, Stogs needs to shoot, but missing 17 shots in a game when no other player on either team shot more then 14 shots is pathetic. No one player should ever put up 14 3’s. The only excuse would be if that player is shooting well over 50% from deep. Another thing, I never said it was his fault why we lost. Im not ignorant with the fact that MD probably has 6 wins right now without Stogs. When you put up a performance like that you need to analyze your own self and see how you can improve on those numbers, the amount of 3’s shot is the most eye popping. Not to mention over analyzing him, nice team slandering statement about criticizing every other player on out team. I will go along with Terrell “Since Turge was tossed and he couldnt bench me, I will shoot as many damn shots as I possible can, but if I were to make the extra pass who knows what high percentage shot one of my teammates could of had” Stoglin.

Elgoood - don't worry

Turge has said numerous times he’s pleased with Stog’s progress and wanting to improve.

A couple of (obvious) things I’d like to point out:

If a player shoots 40% from 3 pt range for the year, they’re not going to do it every game. I’m not picking on your comments, but most times the board’s game by game analysis. I try to look at games as how they ebbed and flowed, and what part each player had in it. In my eyes, when we staged our furious comeback vs. the U, what we noticed was different players were contributing, but Stogs was hitting in the flow, sometimes with set plays/screens for him to come off and shoot. He was hitting, and it got us back to tying the game. The final shot of regulation didn’t play out as planned, and in OT it was obvious many players were gassed. Stog’s numbers got worse from the OTs. And the OTs is where we could say the guys numbers slipped a bit.

So yes, while it’s great every game to have 40% or higher 3 pt , as with 2 pt FG, each game has its own set of circumstances. In the end, I agree (as Turge points out too) that a player should be taking as close to half the FG attempts of their point totals. At least we know the guys are getting to the FT line a lot – that helps get there.

All in all, I think Stogs has room for improvement as does the team. By end of season, I expect them to be playing more efficiently, rebounding and defending better, and distributing better.

Stogs is the only consistent scorer this year

Might as well let him take a bunch of shots every game

all i know is

all i know is that this entire team has impressed me so much this year. it’s not just the performance, which has been slightly above expected levels, it’s the attitude. we have good kids on this team. turgeon also seems very straight to the point. i can’t imagine him letting bullshit distract anybody. he coaches basketball, and that is all. he reminds of on older fella by the name of williams….

Greenberg changing his tune?

"I think he’s fearless, first and foremost," said Hokies coach Seth Greenberg. "He’s not afraid to take shots, he’s not afraid to make plays, he’s very strong, he has a good ability to change speeds. The guy made two ridiculously tough shots with people all over him; he does that every game. He has the ability to make tough shots and he attacks you in transition."

Would love to see Stoglin take senior GV as his model

It always seemed that GV took the first half to try and get his teammates involved in the offense to get them going—especially when his own shot wasn’t falling—then tried to take over himself in the second half. If Stogs could do that and keep improving defensively, I’d definitely say he’s got a shot in the NBA.

by Nihonterp on Feb 4, 2012 12:39 AM EST reply actions

But GV is 6" taller than Stogs

And has a decent rebounding game. I’d rather see Stogs do more Juan Dixon and pretend ’Pe is Steve Blake.

Free Throws

Stoglin shot poorly in the 1st half at Miami but so did the rest of the Terps. 2nd half he was on from 3 and elsewhere. Stogs does not get down after a slow start and that is his biggest weapon. That and getting to the free throw line. There is room for improvement but Stogs is making progress towards an all american selection or ACC Player of the year at this pace of progress. Lets appreciate him for what he is, an outstanding player who can score at will.

I don't get concerned when Stoglin takes lots of shots

I get concerned when he misses them badly consistently, thus indicating there is an issue with his shot.

He’s going to be a bit streaky, just like ALL shooters are . When he starts missing, I get worried that he’s off his game. Now on a GOOD team, he’d stop shooting so much (hopefully) and let other people on the team who ARE shooting well step up. But who exactly is that second or third person? I mean sometimes it is Mosely, I guess sometimes it is Pe (really, almost never) and the third option is passing it into the post.

So, I guess what i am saying is that a poor shooting Stoglin is still better than option B and C on most days. So really, we’re stuck with him shooting a lot and he knows it, Turge knows it and every single opponent knows it. That doesn’t excuse every mistake he’s made. He could still do a better job of recognizing when teams over play him and leave other players with really easy opportunities. But he is still going to have to individually force the issue a lot. Maybe if Pe was better at creating those really easy opportunities for others he wouldn’t have to do that as much.

This is what our team is whether we like it or not. If Stoglin doesn’t shoot it as much, we lose. If he’s shooting poorly, we lose. But if he’s shooting lights out…. well, we at least have a chance depending on how other factors are going. He’s not GV, but GV was in a similar situation until his senior year (i.e., he was the only guy who could score). Look at his senior year when Milbourne, Hays, Mosley (remember he was having a good season that year) and Jordan Williams (not great yet, but better than other previous post options) are ALL starting to contribute as well it doesn’t have to be the GV show all the time. JUST when we really needed it in the critical moments.

So will Stoglin be in a similar situation his junior and senior year? I hope so, but probably depends on how other current (Pe, Faust, Parker, Pankey) and future players (Shaq, Layman, etc.) develop just like it did for Vasquez.. I certainly hope he finds himself in a similar situation to what GV had his Junior and especially his senior year. Yes Stogs needs to continue to grow and develop, but so do the pieces around him!

I have no problem with Stogs taking his shots..

But he needs to learn to turn down the risk meter when we are playing in the lead. There are many times where he launches a ball from deep without running some clock for no reason and the other team comes right back and scores. Those moments are momentum changers. He needs to learn to play from ahead. Those are the times he should drive and draw fouls. Slow the game down and kill any chance at momentum shifts.

I also wonder why we didn’t shift to zone defense with Weijs and Len in at the same time in the last 1/4 of the UNC game. We had the lead. How many buckets did they get inside down the stretch? We were tired. Take out the post, force outside shots that we are likely to rebound. Make them foul us so we slow it down and control the pace.

Fear the Turgle!
