Stan Robinson - New Update... Its Friday lets talk Recruiting

In typical Friday fashion lets talk recruiting. I have some new information regarding Stan Robinson, the VA SG... well come to find out he is actually from Landover MD. I did a piece a few days ago after MD offered so everyone should be pretty familar with the name. Quick refersher, 2013 SG ranked #47 overall by ESPN.

Here is the article from the baltimore sun on him receiving his offer.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/recruiting-blog/bal-insidemdsports-junior-guard-stanford-robinson-talks-terps-offer-20120203,0,6221530.story

Highlights

Growing up in the shadow of College Park, Stanford Robinson followed Maryland basketball attending the occasional game and becoming a fan of former Terps guard Greivis Vasquez. Little did Robinson know, however, that he’d eventually receive a scholarship offer from the Terrapins.

Getting offered by the hometown school is kind of special because it’s right in your backyard, so it’s a special offer,” he said.

“I like how coach Turgeon is letting them play in a good structure, and I feel like that’s a good thing,” he said. “I wasn’t really paying a lot of attention to Maryland after Gary Williams retired, but with coach Turgeon now I’m going to pay more attention.”

Bad news is that UVA is recruiting him the hardest. Hopefully the hometown team bumps MD up a few notches. Hopefully Hill is inviting him to the UNC game this weekend. Right now he hasnt taken any visits and although UVA has been watching most of his games and showing him a lot of attention, MD being in his backyard definately has the advantage, in terms of exposing him to games and the campus.

Side Note:

Apparently MD is expressing interest in Aaron Calixte. He is a 5'11 PG,

: RT : Maryland has been calling about 2013 Stoughton (MA) PG Aaron Calixte.”

I cant find hardly a damn thing on the kid. I doubt we are really showing that much interest. The other night he played Jake Laymans team and he went off for 29 pts 8 rebounds and 8 assists.

Between KP's prized 6-foot-8 Maryland signee Jake Layman, and Calixte -- who has started to garner interest from Division 1 schools, including an offer from Towson

I really wouldnt put to much weight onto the tweet. He is 5'11 and Turge is clearly after large guards... every other guard we are invovled with is atleast 6'3. Not to mention that ESPN or Rivals doesnt even list the kid. The Towson interest also should be obvious that MD is a longshot.

My thoughts: Robinson will be the star piece of our 2013 class. I still believe he will finish around #30 overall and I think Turge will add a PG to compliment him. I think we miss on the twins and Meeks. We end up with Robinson, Jordan, and a 4 star PF that we have yet to hear about. I am thinking a player ranked around a 92/93 and #85 overall.

If we miss on the twins

I pretty much agree on who we end up with. Robinson, Rysheed Jordan, Junior Etou (4* PF from DC Assault) another player we haven’t heard about yet. Even though missing on the twins will sting, a class with the players I mentioned would be a very good get

Rysheed Jordan will attend Saturday's North Carolina vs. Maryland game in College Park, Md.

“The 6-4 junior guard has narrowed his list of scholarship offers to Maryland, Temple, Rutgers, Villanova, Drexel, and La Salle. He’ll pick this summer.”

Philly vs...... US

Leave Philly Rysheed

The rest of the world is a lot better.

Waiting until summer isnt terribly long I guess

and you’ve gotta like our odds against those schools. If we can just convince him to leave Philly

by Maryland1206 on Feb 3, 2012 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

I would take that tandem

If we miss on the twins, I would think the next best thing would be Robinson and Jordan. Hows it feel boys to be chatting about these type recruits?? Damn this is just flat out fun, wish I had the time to get to some area games.

The tables have turned

I love it…. I know we both have been saying for some time now that we think MD should start with the recruits ranked 30-60 first. These recruits usually arent the first options for the Dukes & UNC’s…. get on them early and hope to ride the tidal wave once UNC misses on their first option and comes crawling around.

Jordan and Robinson alone would be enough to propel MD into a top 3 recruiting class in the ACC i would imagine. Thats two top 40 players. Adding a 3rd 4 star top 100 player would be awesome. When was the last time MD had 3 ESPN top 100’s?

by Charlotte NC Terp on Feb 3, 2012 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

Freaking awesome

And way past due. Yeah, those two guards would be sweet. I can,t recall the last time we had 3 top 100,s. I might check out this Jordan kid real soon. I live on the easternshore and can maybe slide up 301 into PA and check him out. Charlotte, gotta pick your brain on this Amille Jeffferson thing coming down to NCST and Duke maybe?? I would have never thought that of that kid six months ago.

by rvandegrift on Feb 3, 2012 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

I got him at Duke

Mason Plumlee might test the pro waters, and the older plumlee is graduating. The young plumlee is over rated. Kelly can play the 3 or the 4. Jefferson would be able to go there and start right away. NC State…. good luck getting the ball with Purvis and Warren. Look at what Warren has done to McGary’s productivity.

by Charlotte NC Terp on Feb 3, 2012 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

Mason will most likely stay

and work on his 15 footer and FT shooting – sound familiar? lol

"A new era has dawned in Maryland Athletics..."

by bball purist on Feb 3, 2012 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

I think Mason will go

His stock will not get any higher than it is right now.

by aholla30 on Feb 3, 2012 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

might mean lottery pick versus 21

so might not be worth it

by bball purist on Feb 3, 2012 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

Mason won't go this year

This years draft class is loaded with bigs unless we get surprised by some staying past there sophomore years. Andre Drummond, Anthony Davis, Jared Sullinger will all go before Mason does. Then you add in the other skill position players that will go before him too, like Harrison Barnes, Kidd-Gilchrest, etc. and he drops to a mid to late 1st at best.

Re: 3 top 100 recruits

The last time it happened was 2003 – the Mike Jones class. I hadn’t realized it had been 9 years.

The best 3 people in the same class we had since then is 2006, when we had GV and Hayes, with Osby as a JUCO.

by Womp Womp on Feb 3, 2012 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

And Rivals rated it

the #3 class

"A new era has dawned in Maryland Athletics..."

by bball purist on Feb 3, 2012 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

Tragedy class...

That’s the class (along with 2002 class) that ended consistent Maryland competiveness under Gary Williams.

Children should be seen and not heard.

by CharlesDriesell on Feb 3, 2012 7:06 PM EST up reply actions

He must have forgot about Milbourne

The 4 year player’s from that class were GV, Hayes, and Milbourne. Milbourne really turned into a nice piece and I think Mychal Parker could eventually be very similar. I also think that Gary should have redshirted both Milbourne and Parker. Both barely ever saw the floor as freshman, and we really could have used Milbourne on last year’s team to go along with JWill.

by RealtorTerp on Feb 3, 2012 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

we're talking rated out of HS

Milbourne was not rated high enough to compare to the ’Who?" trio

"A new era has dawned in Maryland Athletics..."

by bball purist on Feb 3, 2012 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

He was.

I was just referring to the best 3 person group in one class. Comparisons become pointless when you are comparing different numbers of recruits.

I made the assumption that Osby was considered the better recruit at the time

by Womp Womp on Feb 3, 2012 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

He was fringe top 100 before the summer circuit and he turned up with a bum ankle I think for aau play, comibned with not playing on a major aau team. then he broke his shooting hand and that about did it for him shooting up in the rankings.

Did you see his stats for his game coming back? I love the 10 steals, but I’m so disappointed he shot 1 for 4 from the stripe.

by djcarv2005 on Feb 4, 2012 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

try to get to at least one

a gym packed tight w/ 1500-2500 people is a total blast. HSer voices bouncin’ of all the walls, guards in each others’ grills the entire game, players diving and sliding after loose balls, gotta love it!

by bball purist on Feb 3, 2012 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah b-ball

I am going to check out Jordans schedule, see what I can do. No way do I have the time to do a piece like you did the other day, lol. But will give you a quick IMO,,,lol. I like our odds against the others he is listing more then i do after reading Robinson,s. But will hope for them both.

by rvandegrift on Feb 3, 2012 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

was just going to ask the same thing

While on that subject of Calhoun and UConn ,long term who would be in line to replace that punk? Any ideas, or could that program take a big fall when he packs it in?? I would think they could get a top name.

by rvandegrift on Feb 3, 2012 2:09 PM EST reply actions

Weird, I know, but...

I am actually a fan of UConn as well, similar to how bballpurist likes St. Johns. Both of my parents went to school there, so I’ve been cheering them on since the Ray Allen days…anyways, it seems as though Kevin Ollie is being groomed as the coach-in-waiting at UConn. He was only added to the staff about 2 years ago, but he has been a great recruiter for them and is also an alum.

Basically, I doubt that they would take much of a fall whenever Calhoun decides it’s time to step down.

by RealtorTerp on Feb 5, 2012 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

u know who Larry Blucher was?

"A new era has dawned in Maryland Athletics..."

PS - I think Ollie will step in and get HC

"A new era has dawned in Maryland Athletics..."

by bball purist on Feb 6, 2012 8:11 AM EST up reply actions

glad the acc didnt take them now.

they could really fall apart as a program if any ncaa violations were to emerge. i would imagine it would be hard to attract a coach to replace calhoun if that were the case

by (adm)iregary on Feb 3, 2012 2:14 PM EST reply actions

Only if violations came out of it.

Otherwise with the Natttys and all the recent history I think it would depend on who takes his place. I hate him even worse then I do Ratface. Tired of that crook pulling talent form B-more. I hope he is done…………

by rvandegrift on Feb 3, 2012 2:37 PM EST reply actions

thx Charlotte

btw, Marcus Derrickson is from Bowie – another PGC kid going to Paul VI. HC Farello using those PGC contacts!

What's the latest on BeeJay Ana? Do we still have a shot?

Hope Turge gets the PG who most resembles Steve Francis. Never saw anyone pass as well as Brad Davis.

by Snappin Terp on Feb 3, 2012 10:46 PM EST reply actions

Haven't heard much lately

Going on past references, we don’t have much of a shot. He’s said he wants to leave for college on more than one occasion.

by terpsallday on Feb 3, 2012 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

We're definitely going to need at least one big

in the 2013 class. We’ve been involved – at least to the best of my knowledge – with BeeJay Anya, Kennedy Meeks, Junior Etou and Dominic Woodson. Is anyone aware of any others? Anya has said he wants to go away to school, but he did at least say he likes the direction of the team under Turge.

by curterp on Feb 4, 2012 6:22 AM EST reply actions

Our best shots of those four

are Etou and Woodson. Etou plays for DC Assault too, so cue the Hill connections hopefully.

by djcarv2005 on Feb 4, 2012 10:37 AM EST up reply actions

Anya

BeeJay recently said that he would reevaluate his interest in MD and that if the situation was right he would stay home. I think the signing of Hill rejuvenated his interest in UMD. Lets get it done.

by amaymon on Feb 5, 2012 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

The Hill signing rejuvenated D.C.'s inerest in MD

When he wasn’t fired after getting the DUI, I think that erased any doubt DC Assault, Team Takeover or any other AAU program would have had about MD trying to rebuild the bridge to DC players
