The women closed out the regular season this weekend, beating UNC Friday night and NC State today (more poor scheduling by the ACC btw) to finish 25-4. Alyssa Thomas had a monster game today, with 24 points, 17 rebounds, and 4 blocks. And 22 of those points came in the second half.
They finish in 3rd in the ACC with a 12-4 record - Duke is 1st, Miami 2nd. In the NCAA rankings, Miami is #5, Maryland is #6, Duke is #7. It's pretty clear that barring some big upsets the ACC crown is coming down to one of those 3. Personally I think all three have a good shot at it. Duke is probably favored after beating Miami the other night, but MD proved they could beat them. And I think we can beat Miami too, even though we're 0-2 against them this year. It's hard to beat a team 3x, and Miami does worse on the road, even though it'll be a neutral court.
Maryland pretty much controls their NCAA seeding at this point...if they want that 2 seed, it's theirs to lose, as they basically currently hold it. Winning the ACC Tournament would give this team a lot of confidence going into the NCAAs, so I hope they can do it.
Anyway, first ACC Tourney game for them is the quarterfinal, since they have the first round bye. They will play the winner of #6 UVA vs. #11 BC (should be UVA) at 8 pm. Friday. Game to be televised on RSN. They won at UVA by 17 a couple weeks ago. If they win the quarterfinal, they would face Miami in the semis, barring an upset. That means yes, MD vs. Duke is a potential championship game.
And just for fun, a poll!
