Andre Powell takes over for Lyndon Johnson as special teams coordinator
Huzzah! ...Actually, this is both good and bad.
The good: The Prez oversaw the worst special teams I've ever seen at Maryland. It was hideous and awful. Powell has experience with it before, as he was the ST coordinator at Clemson for three years. His return numbers were a bit artificially inflated thanks to C.J. Spiller, but his final two years were top-30 in the country in kick return coverage, which Maryland really struggled in last year.
The bad: Maryland now has two linebackers coaches, Dudzinski and Johnson. Seems redundant. The linebackers better be top-notch.

There's nothing wrong with redundancy...
redundancy = repetitiveness…which should = consistency.
My understanding
Is that the prez will focus on outside linebackers.
Also, powell will serve as a running backs coach.

Seems Randy is starting to release this sort of info on his twitter account now. Maybe not such a big fan of the media right now?
See - Randy is Loyal
LBJ was protected. And Randy didn’t do it with the other changes so it doesn’t seem as bad. But he took action again to try and remedy the ST. We knew it had to be done, but he’s slipped it in nicely.
"A new era has dawned in Maryland Athletics..."
Does his middle name really begin with a B?
Cause that’d be awesome
who knows - just goin' with the Prez joke

I love this move....
….could care less about what LBJ does as the DC should oversee him regardless. Just keep him away from the STs and that, in and of itself is a vast improvement. Hope we never see the “come and block it” formation again.
Well we certainly have speed
Diggs, Levern Jacobs(real fast), Pickett and Makinton Doloreant(no idea how to spell it) would be my candidates for returners

Can someone with ESPN Insider tell me if the recent article “Maryland expected to add QB” is about Ricardo Young or someone else???
It's Young
Not to violate the paywall completely, but broad brush, his HS coach says it’s a done deal. And RY should be available to play this fall as long as he finishes his courseload at Iowa Western CC.
Thank you. I thought maybe it was Matt Barkley.

gross
USC QBs don’t have that good a streak going in the NFL right now haha
what does that have to do with UMD? Do you think our QBs have a better chance at the NFL? I was kidding about it being Barkley, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t take him in a heartbeat.

chill out man
I was joking along with you. Of course I’d take Barkley, his college play is outstanding, no matter what may happen to him in the pros.
I'm not sure how true it is that he can play in the fall
He needs to have to two full time semesters (or 30 credits at cc) away from D1 football to play right away. It is also more confusing because he was redshirting this year I believe with New Mexico so no one knows if that counts or not as well.
So unless he just became a beast in the classroom and filled up on every online course he could find at Iowa Western CC I’m not sure he pulled that off. Unless he is getting a hardship waiver from the NCAA to come closer to home?
Could of been
I have no idea. And I wasn’t trying to say he wasn’t either, I was just stating unless he became a beast, i.e. taking 30 credits at once (which is absurd), I wasn’t too sure if he’d be eligible since New Mexico is a D1 college. The transfer rules state you need to sit a year to play at another D1 school, OR complete 30 credits (or graduate??) from a community college.
How is there any bad to this??
Special teams were terrible, so hopefully this will fix the problem.
Redundant to have 2 linebacker coaches? You know we are switching to a 3-4, outside and inside linebackers. Totally 2 different type of positions with different responsibilities. What school wouldn’t have 2 coaches there? Especially with a defense that depends so much on linebacker play, the more specific coaching they get the better.
I don't think most teams carry two LB coaches
Or, for Bens sake, two DL coaches. Just because it is two different positions doesn’t mean that the coach doesn’t know them. The coach is only responsible for two positions on the field!
Do most teams carry 3 OL coaches for the three different positions on the line?
That is different
For an O line the scheme is all the same thing, regardless of position. With LB’s in a 3-4 the OLB’s responsibilities are completely different then the MLB’s.
But most teams have either a secondary coach and 2 LB coaches or they have a CB’s coach a Safeties coach and then 1 LB’s coach. But I can’t think of any team that has 2 Dline coaches.

I was hoping they would make this change
Any ST improvement from last year’s nightmare will help. We have several guys who could become another CJ Spiller. The key will be the blockers. Powell is the right choice. HooYa!
