Shoutout to Testudo Times
I have a friend who is a senior in high school, who is basically deciding between UNC an UMD as his choice of school for next year. Obviously, I've been recruiting him very hard on the merits of the school, had him on some visits (I feel like I'm Wallace Loh's assistant coach as I'm writing this), and praised the merits of in-state tuition.
But this kid is an absolute diehard basketball fan. As it was for me, when I was weighing UNC and Maryland as options, he wants to go to a school where he's going to have the most fun cheering for athletics. UNC's incredible tradition as a basketball school holds some serious weight for him in the decision.
I've been trying to sell him hard on how much more fun it is to root for an underdog, how our team is on the rise, how he will never have the chance to storm the court at UNC, etc. I simply told him that Maryland fans care more about the team than UNC fans do, which he immediately disagreed with.
To prove my point, I showed him the two blogs: Testudo Times and Carolina March. I showed him how there were 7 comments in the entire UNC-NC State game thread while there were 1000+ for the Maryland-Miami game. While his decision is still in the balance, he was impressed at the rabidness (is that a word?) of the fan base as emphasized by the blog. I argued that if Maryland was even close to as good as UNC was every year, our crowd would be 5x the crowds in the Dean Dome just because UNC draws so many casual fans because they're so good.
Long story short, I felt proud showing him the merit of this blog. I felt proud at seeing our school's blog have multitudes more traffic than any other sports blog I've seen. It's made me even more proud to be a Terp. So thank you, Testudo Times, and all who inhabit it and make it as successful and awesome a community as it is.

UNC has about the most fair-weatherd fans of any ACC school
sure they have their diehards, but if you were to see two people walking down a random street in like NYC or Chicago and one was wearing a Terps hat and the other was wearing a UNC hat, and you asked them to tell you what they knew about that school, the UNC guy would be like “Jordan baby! Pycho T! Dean Dome!” and thats about it. The Terp guy would list you probably 15 terp legends, not just Bias and Dixon, he would tell you about mcmillen and buck williams, the original midnight madness, Lefty, the UCLA of the East, the 1973 (75?) ACC championship game vs NC State, the bob wade dark ages, gary being hired, the 1993 md georgetown game, joe smith’s frosh year, exray hipp, keef booff, adrian branch, laron profit, how the wizard stayed and resurrected the program, gone in 60 seconds, “oh he steal!”, back to back final 4s, the gilcrist 2004 acc tourny run, GV, the double buzzer beaters, the first gold rush game vs dook, the snow-poclypse 10,000 student UNC game and that is just off the top of my head and HECK I’m 21, from New York and only started learning this shit 3 years ago when I got in.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that yea sure Dook and UNC have a more “storied” history and are “blue blood programs” but more of us actually know our stories and more of us care more than those assholes in north carolina

Got there from Takoma Park (living on a 30 degree incline hill no less)
Sat next to a couple of thugs wearing thugtastic Carolina gear. As the game wound down, I looked over, waved, and asked them how it feels
dont really buy that
I was @ MD from 2005-2009 and trust me there are a lot of fair weather md fans as well! I used to drive 3 hours for games my fresh year over winter break and ended up not getting duke tickets and then like 10 girls in my hall that never went to any games got tix.
I grew up in NJ a die hard UNC fan but realized when i was looking at schools that getting into UNC out of state was about as likely as duke playing an evenly whistled game. I viewed UNC’s ’05 natty as a present and a send off for me being such a loyal fan and having to give it up going to MD.I guess i was born to hate duke. I always respected MD bc of those epic duke battles. Been a MD die-hard ever since but still find myself rooting for UNC in games not involving us. UNC is just a different breed like being a steeler fan, sure they both win a lot and get a lot of pub but it is expected year in and year out. MD is kind of like the Cowboys now.. Great tradition but they invent ways to lose, invent ways to have the ball bounce the other way and so on making the inevitable comeback an even better feeling!!
ill probably be trolled for using the cowboys but we can all agree on 1 thing. EFFF DUKE HARD
The Cowboys comparison is degrading
And I’m a Bengals fan. Jerry Jones as Kevin Anderson? Jones lost his bid on some original Muhammad Ali boxing gloves over the weekend. How could a billionaire lose a bid like that? Just like he meddles into his team’s business too much.
I also grew up in NJ, but now live 30 miles from Chapel Hill. UNC fans are idiots. If they don’t win every game. all they do is drool, snibble and criticize. All I do is shoot them the V sign abd say :Go Butch Davis"

Almost as degrading as 5 playoff wins in 45 Years.
Bengals fans… lol
Screech's Godson
UMD Class of 2014! GO TERPS!!!
Touche Touche
I’ve been a die hard UMD supporter ever since I saw my first terp basketball game on tv as a youngster living in VA. been living in GA for over seven years now and when i found this site a few years ago i immediately bookmarked it and not a day goes by where im not on it every hour or so. terp nation has some serious supporters and this site is evidence of it.
Turtle Power!
so...
He’s from MD and has to be talked in to being a Terps fan?
You'd be surprised
how much of a stigma there is with an in-state school. I was a Maryland fan as a kid, then lost it for a while as I started to think about colleges and all that, then fell in love again.
I live 30 miles from Chapel Hill and hardly hear a murmer from Tar Hell Nation
I’m a lifelong Terp (class of ’73) and have been to many college basketball and football games. Nothing beats Cole/Comcast for raving fans wjo support the Terps. Actually, my proudest moment was when Lefty and the Terps beat UNC in the Dean Dome (yes, I was there), the first loss for UNC there.
UNC fans are just cocktail party animals. Socialites. Same as Dookies. Terribly pathetic.
Come to Maryland and be a man among boys!!
Len with the steal and 2 handed reverse dunk
I desperately want to see another Terp do a 2 handed reverse dunk.
He's 5'5
a bit too short, sadly.
But he would hit the halfcourt shot in Sync the Shot every time. I’ve never seen this kid miss a halfcourt shot.
If you yell too loudly in the Dean Dome...you get thrown out
clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose!
smoke'em if ya got'em!

go to unc
If you want to cheer in a student section with girls who will complain if you get too rowdy or excited. Sec 114 beats that by a light year.

Carolina March isn't Comparable
No offense to SB Nation, but Carolina March isn’t an equivalent comparison to Testudo Times. A better comparison might be the more popular Tar Heel Blog: http://www.tarheelblog.com/ (213 comments in the NCSU-UNC game thread). Still, in general, the argument that Maryland has higher fanbase engagement on-line is probably valid.
