They're pursuing the tampering charge through the ACC and SEC - why not the NCAA, pray? - but in the meantime have lifted the restriction from their releases. If it's determined that Vanderbilt did indeed tamper, then obviously the transfer will be retroactively blocked.

So that's that. Hopefully this marks the end of the "discussion."

I guess I'm an Edsall "hater"

But IMO this is exactly (and I mean exactly) the course of action I wanted to see in the first place. Protect the school, make a formal complaint, show DOB and the players a little class in letting them go where they want to go. They didn’t do anything wrong here.

If it turns out that Franklin and Vandy are guilty of tampering, the Terps get vindication, and any players who planned to land there can blame Franklin rather than Edsall and Maryland.

I don’t see the downside here at all.

i believe an explanation needs to come forth from KA

i would have been ok if we stuck to our guns given we thought there was tampering. this action makes it look like someone didn’t think this out before making the decision to eliminate Vandurbuilt from consideration. we do have triple digit iq’s steering the boat here …. right?

Thank you

Justice has been served. Now if the NCAA can prove that tampering occurred, then block the transfer.

or admit when we're wrong

and take responsibility for it. aka, something Edsall should have done all season long

by kryptonianjorel on Feb 22, 2012 8:37 AM EST up reply actions

god I hope Vanderbilt gets caught

Not even because I don’t like Franklin (which, I do like him), but because it would just prove all you haters wrong. You guys just take whatever happens and immediately spin the most negative view you can think of on Edsall. Did you even once consider Franklins quote that he kept in constant contact with DOB? That is enough right there for almost every coach in the nation to block a transfer to that school.

by djcarv2005 on Feb 22, 2012 8:52 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

exactly..

transfer blocks happen all the time. particularly in case like this. there is a chance that edsall was sending a message with the block, but realistically the university would not waste the time or money unless they were confident that there is merit somewhere in there. i like franklin too, but business is business… —and this is MD program-damaging business that could have happened.

a midseason conversation of: hey coach, how are you doing? i can’t stand it here, i need a place to shine…. —then come on over here. i have a spot for you danny. the ncaa is a fickle bunch that usually smashes what they don’t like. but pass on something that they want, like greg paulus transferring to play football.

unfortunately, i think this has only just begun.

by space_ on Feb 22, 2012 9:19 AM EST up reply actions

This is different than taking responsibility

Yes, Edsall needs to be more humble. But this wasn’t something he was wrong about. It just adds fuel to the media’s fire that Edsall doesn’t know what he’s doing. It’s not as if he was limiting his future and potential on the field or in the classroom by saying he couldn’t go to Vandy. Edsall was protecting this program by doing that, and I fully endorse it. I’m sure there are plenty of good schools with good football teams that would’ve taken O’Brien. His pushing the situation only confirms the speculation that him and Franklin have been talking behind the scenes, or else how would he even know that Franklin wanted him at Vandy?

by FeartheTurtle2002 on Feb 22, 2012 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

Woulda been a lot easier to START at this spot

NCAA is top-down . . . UMD complains to ACC, they call SEC, then the NCAA investigates. The whole “blocking Vandy” thing becomes moot if DOB/JF exchanged texts or something “beyond a greeting” because the FIRST thing that will happen is DOB becomes ineligible if he goes to there.

So the mystery of why UMD football needed to volunteer to be a punching bag for the last week or two remains. But at least going forward, they’re in the right spot.

by dmor20 on Feb 22, 2012 8:37 AM EST reply actions

well, I'll agree with you on this

Perhaps it could of been better to start with going for the tampering allegations, but then again perhaps Edsall was trying to avoid having Vandy investigated? Perhaps he was trying to send the signal via the blocked transfer to quit the texting with current MD players and not have him investigated?

The man may be a complete arrogant asshole, but I don’t think he wanted to have Franklin investigated.

by djcarv2005 on Feb 22, 2012 8:55 AM EST up reply actions

Watching this go down . . .

it just seems like UMD (admins AND football) can’t think through a scenario and see the ramifications of their own actions. If Vandy/JF DID cheat, UMD STILL got a national, multi-week, black-eye they didn’t need to volunteer for.

As a Maryland fan, this could be a win-win going forward. Either Vandy cheated (I doubt it, but guys with more info than me believe it) and we look infinitesmally less stupid OR the NCAA investigates and clears JF/Vandy and the fallout presents an opportunity to dump TWO geniuses in one throw (ethics violation/misconduct = NO TERMINATION PAYOUT).

Why I don’t think Vandy cheated – DOB texts JF saying “I wanna get out of here, it’s a nuthouse.” JF texts back, “I recruited you to the right school, I know you’re frustrated, but the right move is to stay and work it out. You know I can’t talk to you about transferring due to NCAA rules.” No violation, positive relationship maintained (seen this happen before), kid eventually gets a release and transfers.

Better late than never I guess

This is exactly how it should have been handled from the start. You believe there was tampering? Then file a complaint and let them handle it.

Expect more articles bashing RE and KA for mishandling this. It better include some props for doing the right thing here as well. They knew the timing of this wouldn’t very good but they did it anyway. Give them credit for it.

by Terpentine on Feb 22, 2012 9:12 AM EST reply actions

There won't be any positives that come from this now

There won’t be any articles stating how Edsall realized his perceived mistake and did his best to correct it. The media smells blood in the water, and they are going to continue to attack until he’s gone or he wins big. The damage had already been done when it came to restricting DOB from Vandy, it’s hard to imagine how it would’ve possibly gotten any worse. All this will do is add more fuel to the fire when the media says Edsall doesn’t know what he’s doing, when in this case he absolutely did. This is a complete lose-lose situation for us now.

i saw this on another website

“Funny thing is Maryland was afraid of the potential bad press by hiring Mike Leach. LMFAO oh they have found a winner in Edsall.”

since leach has been hired at wash state he has been fairly quiet, edsall on the other hand is making national headlines. funny how some things have the complete opposite effect you expected

Worth Noting

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing the other night on Sczabo’s show – it was reported that nothing will come out of the Craig James lawsuit. They were saying Leach may have been wronged and set up by James – unbelievable.

tough call

I’ve been torn on this topic

But I keep coming back to this…

If kids are gonna follow Locks here from New Mexico, there is no reason we should stop a kid from wanting to play for Franklin

And I know there’s a bunch of layers to that and possible tampering (on both sides, mind you) and etc.

But that’s what I keep coming back to

by bloodwatermission on Feb 22, 2012 9:43 AM EST reply actions

Two things to this

First, I think that a lot of the kids that are rumored to come here had transferred from New Mexico before Locksley came here. Also, a lot of the kids that are rumored to be transferring from New Mexico to Maryland are from this area, which would make it pretty easy for them to get a waiver to be closer to their families.

by FeartheTurtle2002 on Feb 22, 2012 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

Locksley was fired, Franklin left on his own

Not that I want to see Locksley leave, but what type of repsone would there be if say he goes to Rutgers. Is everyone going to bitch and claim Edsall is the devil if he blocks players from transferring to Rutgers (assuming they arent on the schedule)

by Asnis71 on Feb 22, 2012 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

Of course

any reason to complain about Edsall is a good reason apparently.

and the complaint before you complain about the complaining. :-)

Missing one of the big points

I understand and support DOB being free to go to any schools NOT on our schedule. Why would RE allow DOB go to any ACC school? That makes no sense to me.

No win situation in the court of public opinion – anyone see Bonnie Bernstein’s comments on it?

by HughGR on Feb 22, 2012 9:49 AM EST reply actions

What bothers me

is the fact that Franklin has been gone for a year and allegedly kept in touch with several players. For what purpose other than to pursuade them to transfer. I don’t buy the bs line from the SI article about him wanting to maintain a relationship. Now if Locksley continues to do that with NM players a year from now, then that is bs too.

I feel like Maryland blocked the transfer because they knew there was tampering and didn’t want to allow it. With all the bad press, they’re flipping the script and saying, ‘fine, we’ll let the NCAA handle this.’ I hope Franklin and DOB get caught and get hit with the bad press.

Randy Quote
"While at first I thought it was important to limit the institutions to which they could transfer, I have since reconsidered my decision" Edsall said in a written statement released by Maryland. "At the end of the day, I want what’s best for these guys and I wish them well in their futures. As a program we are looking forward to putting this distraction behind us and to moving forward. Spring practice opens on March 10 and we can’t wait to get back out on the field."

by Custos on Feb 22, 2012 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

Some will

This was the correct move. At this point, it would have been easier to just keep the waiver in place so you have to give RE and KA credit for going this route. It would have been a lot more painless if we would have chosen this route from the start but that’s water under the bridge.

Now we have to see if CJ can take a huge step forward in Spring practices.

by Terpentine on Feb 22, 2012 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

This was perfect

As much as I don’t necessarily agree with the backtracking, this statement could not have been more perfect. Whoever crafted this statement for Edsall definitely earned their paycheck today. And just to be clear, it’s not that I don’t think these are Randy’s original thoughts, but even his supporters know he has a tough time expressing himself fluently.

Every Situation is different

At UMD you had a popular player, an unpopular 1st year coach, an unsuccessful season and a large number of other transfers….mix in an ex coach who is having success at his school and you have all the makings of a perfect shit storm….someone at UMD should have seen it coming

Good move by Edsall

Whether it was media pressure or perhaps he decided on his own to put the kids first doesnt really matter at this point…….now lets hope the investigation by the ACC/SEC quietly go away so we can get ready for the season without further distractions…..

Next Up: Reinstate the soccer and lax games with Georgetown and continue to negotiate professionally with them to see if we can get a bball game done

In the end

I bet Danny doesn’t end up at Vandy. With the whiff of improper contact and Vandy being Vandy, I think the AD tells Franklin to back off DOB.

by Terpentine on Feb 22, 2012 11:13 AM EST reply actions

Perhaps

And the irony in all of this is that Vandy doesnt need DOB anyway…and we dont need any more press related to this which is why I hope the investigation quietly fizzles out

Edsall was protecting Danny

I’m still going to stick to my guns and say that Edsall cares about Danny and all of his players. By preventing him from going to Vandy, he was protecting Danny from an investigation and possible ineligibility. I would bet that he diid not plan to initiate the investigation to protect the players and decided to do block the school instead. That should have been much cleaner.

Unfortunately you jerks and the media raised such a fuss about it that it began to affect our other players, the team, the university, and recruiting. Now you have forced his hand to go the other route. An investigation must now happen which will sully the names of our former players and coaches to prove that we were right for the original plan. Thank you to all of you for that. That’s fine, because now we will move forward and Edsall will know how the true Maryland fanbase is…not having the back of our coach. Welcome to Maryland Edsall.

I care - it was unfair to the young men who were choosing to transfer...

..but I agree that RE should have focused more on turning the program around.

by HughGR on Feb 22, 2012 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

Sounds like 2 things happened

1) Someone else (ACC or NCAA) told Randy they would take over the investigation from here regarding any tampering
2) RE made the right choice and dropped his (and KA’s ) transfer restrictions because politically it is the right thing to do.

I personally want to see DOB transfer to Vandy and beat both Alabama and LSU next year. Auburn as well. Then RE may see that he misjudged DOB’s talent as a Terp and will learn from this experience.

by Snappin Terp on Feb 22, 2012 12:56 PM EST reply actions

I personally want to see...

DOB transfer to Vanderbilt, and Vanderbilt go 0-12. Just to spite James Franklin for the classless tampering, and to spite a national media who made a big deal out of something that happens all the time. That is what I wan to see.

Children should be seen and not heard.

by CharlesDriesell on Feb 22, 2012 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe...

The staff needed time to see what the best course of action was on the transfer of DOB and decided that limiting his choices was the best option initially. Had they not limited his choices and DOB decides to transfer to Vandy, it would look incredibly petty for Edsall to suddenly cry tampering and he would have been castrated – by the media and fans.

Now that he has removed the limitation for DOB and others, he knows that they won’t transfer to Vandy because there is a fire behind the smoke and it would have left a stain on the players. He is protecting them in a back-handed way while sending a strong message to Franklin to back off.

It is certainly easy to question the motives or decisions of Edsall after the fallout has taken place. He would have been questioned no matter which course he chose. I don’t think he was in an easy position at all with this one. Terps fans are in an uproar because it was DOB and the transfer count is ratcheting up. The media is eager to join any feeding frenzy, no proof required – just blood in the water. Edsall is the bad guy. The boogeyman for all of our ills.

Granted, he has not had a good year. I liked Ralph, but our program was growing stagnant. We have had a pretty lousy run of coaches since Bobby Ross and are growing impatient. The school has made any number of fundamentally poor decisions since the Ross era ended, but Edsall has only had a year and not an easy one. Patience, please. We will know in a couple of years whether he is the right guy or not.

Terps have been mediocre for 2+ decades (with a good season mixed in here and there), it’s not like we are going drop from being a perennial top 10. If he is the right guy, the climb to the top will be worth it. If not, the fall – not so far.

by Terpies NC on Feb 22, 2012 4:00 PM EST reply actions

I really wonder what Maryland you root for in football . . .

Going into 2011, the Terps had been to 4 bowls in 5 years. 6 of Fridge’s 10 years had the Terps in the top 3 in the ACC or their division.

Fridge was the only UMD coach to win an ACC title since Ross (who had a losing season his last year, btw, and won a much easier ACC).

Both Ross & Fridge coached 4 different “top 25” UMD teams.

I think there’s a pretty fair way to fall. When UMD has a non-exceptional football coach the team REALLY starts to stink, and NO UMD football coach has ever come back from a first year like Randy’s to be a success. We’re squarely in Vanderlinden territory right now.

by dmor20 on Feb 22, 2012 4:22 PM EST reply actions

I didn't know there was another UMD

I lliked Fridge and was torn about his departure, but let’s be honest the Military, Humanitarian, Champs, and Emerald bowls are not the stuff of heady programs.

Albeit, Ross followed a very successful Claiborne – he still took us to bowls in 4 of his five years. His winning percentage was a healthy 67% and he took us to 3 consecutive ACC championships (83, 84, & 85). Fridge’s only ACC championship was in his first year.

To say the ACC was much weaker in Ross’ day is misleading. Granted Florida State, VT and Miami were not in the ACC, but ACC teams were consistently rated in the top 20. Clemson won the Natty in 1981 and MD played OOC powerhouses West Virginia, Syracuse, Miami & Penn State almost every year. He didn’t have OOC cupcakes like Delaware, Middle Tennesee State, JMU, Florida International to pad his record.

In 1985, UMD was the preseason #1 team in the country in some publications. So yeah, Ross was way more successful than Fridge. Ross “losing season” was 5-5-1 with an OOC schedule that included Pitt, WVa, Vanderbilt, BC and National Champs Penn State.

There were only 18 bowl games back then compared to today’s 35. I am not sure if UMD would have gone to 4 bowls in five years if that were the case now. Maryland hasn’t been ranked in the Top 20 since 2003.

I bleed Maryland, but realize that we weren’t where we want to be and Fridge wasn’t taking us there. He was a breath of fresh air at first, but he couldn’t keep the momentum. Thems the facts.

by Terpies NC on Feb 22, 2012 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

Military, Humanitarian, Champs, and Emerald bowls are

all beyond the reach of the current program . . . so there’s that . . .

Bobby Ross did a great job and is a great coach – but Fridge was a Terp for twice as long, you can make the stagnated argument, but you could also argue the Terps were up and down – which is what you’re going to get when you’re competing with far fewer resources than your opponents (i.e. what Fridge was dealing with).

Bottom line, there’s – in my opinion – a VERY long way down from bowl eligible to 30+ point loser to Temple. We’re talking about getting passed by about 2/3rds of FBS teams . . . It’s a much shorter drop from top 10 to top 25 and pretty unfair to call the rest equal

by dmor20 on Feb 23, 2012 4:10 PM EST reply actions

I hear you

What I am hoping for UMD is to have a great program. One that is consistently ranked and a draw for fans and recruits. We have had that since the Claiborne-Ross era. Yes, Fridge put together some great teams, but he couldn’t translate that success to create a great program. Edsalls first year was horrible. Incredibly painful and depressing to watch especially after the tease of the Miami game. New unis, great buzz, nice win….Thud. It was a tough year.

I guess that I am willing to give him a reasonable chance for success. I hope it works out and we become a perennial powerhouse. Maybe a pipe dream, but after Krivak, Duffner, Vanderlinden…I can give him a few seasons.
