That’s quite some equivocation on the Vandy answer. It leads me to believe that the football program thinks Franklin is messing around. It might be true, but the program might also be deluding themselves- a la Yow claiming Gary was sabotaging her coaching search.

by discuit on Feb 14, 2012 10:32 PM EST reply actions

Well...

if he thinks it, it is one thing. If he says right out, especially in a press conference, it’s quite another thing. So, I don’t think you can compare him to Yow.

Children should be seen and not heard.

by CharlesDriesell on Feb 14, 2012 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

If he says it outright

then doesn’t that indicate that it’s suspicion without evidence? At least he was smart enough not to say anything he had no proof of. Sounds like there may be some Yow thinking after all.

by dmor20 on Feb 15, 2012 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

Well we just differ in our opinions

I think deflecting questions with ‘no comment’ is the opposite of being stylish

by Custos on Feb 15, 2012 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

true, but

the point isn’t to be “stylish” it’s to NOT VIOLATE NCAA RULES OR EXPOSE THE UNIVERSITY TO SANCTIONS.

If Vandy wants to push it and Randy has no evidence, the NCAA could call Randy’s allegations an ethics violation.

When you’re making a naked power/PR move (if DOB went to Vandy and was successful it would obviously make RE look like an even bigger boob – it makes sense for him not to risk that) you’re not going to look classy or stylish. Accusing people of cheating when you’re bullying a kid so you don’t potentially look like a boob isn’t too clever. Refusing to talk about is smart.

by dmor20 on Feb 15, 2012 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

So what NCAA reg is being violated...

if RE (or Debbie Yow, for that matter) decides to let slip that they think a player was being tampered with? If the NCAA decides to open an investigation then the person doing the accusing will no doubt be called on to give a sworn statement of their knowledge of the situation. If the NCAA determines no violation has occurred, it isn’t like we would ever get penalized.

I liked it a lot

I think every answer was spot on, and completely appropriate. Every player leaving UMD has been treated the same way, and they aren’t going to change it for anyone, not even Danny

by Custos on Feb 15, 2012 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

Which is appropriate

If anyone from Vandy did anything even remotely of the sorts that was implied.

And if we all think that in this age that JF had ZERO contact with any of his former players, and said ZERO negative things about our program to recruits, we are all naive.

Luckily it isn’t any of our damn calls to make — the person that made it, made it for everyone…. if you were gonna biutch you shoulda done it 20 transfers ago.

The haters will hate

Randy Edsall no matter what he says just because they do. Some here have made the comment that RE has disrupted a program that did not need to be. I for one beg to differ with that position. The fact of the matter was that despite our team’s record in some of their better years they still could not compete with the upper echelon teams. In fact they got blown out of several games even while having a great record. The only was to get to the top is to start from scratch and remake the Maryland football program. That is what Randy is doing and it’s too bad there are so many whiners out there who criticize everything he says and does. Just you wait and see, Randy will get this team not only to bowl games but to the very top of college football.

by clevesanterp on Feb 14, 2012 10:38 PM EST reply actions

You sir are completely incorrect. His “method” may be one that could work for another coach but this guy is a bafoon! He throws his own players under the bus as evidence after the loss to Temple. I don’t care who you are but using “I didnt recruit these players” as an excuse for losing is LOSER talk. I dont care what he did in a mediocre conference during a down year. He butchered a team of players that never had issues when the Fridge was there. I don’t think Fridge was the greatest coach but he had respect for the game and never let his ego get in the way of the team. Hence the reason he hired guys like Franklin… Now as far as his cry baby dickhead moves of blocking transfers to Vandy… give me a break. So let the kid play get rid of Edsall because the guy destroyed the careers of OBrien, Adams, Tate, McCree and Dorsey just to name a few. He is a butthead and terrible coach that got blown out by Temple (for Temple’s first ever win against an ACC School)!!!

We knocked off 14 ranked teams between 2001-2010. That’s an average of 1.4 ranked teams per year. What measure are you using for upper echelon? If anything, we had a harder time beating the lower echelon teams.

by Mike S. on Feb 15, 2012 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

1.4 wins against ranked teams per year>>>>>1 win against a ranked team all time

Randy has not shown anything to indicate he is capable of taking the Terps to the “next level (up).” He has already proven he can take them several levels down.

by HughGR on Feb 15, 2012 9:48 AM EST up reply actions

Mike I know it's hard to believe

but in 2001 when they went 10-2 they lost to Fla. State 52-31 and Fla. 56-23-spankings
1n 2002 they went 11-3 and lost to ND 22-0, Fla. State 37-10, and VA 48-13 more spankings
1n 2003 they went 10-3 and got spanked by Fla. State 35-10
1n 2006 they went 9-4 and WV whopped them 45-24 and BC by a score of 38-16.

My point was that even though they had some very good records they still got a whoppin put on them by teams with superior speed and even Ralph commented that they had a tough time competing with some of the upper echelon teams. That is not to say that they did not have some very strong teams or that they had not done well, but they still were not in the top of the rankings competing for a National Championship. That is where I want our terps to be and I think the General can take them to new heights.

Appeal

RE is being a bit disingenuous when he says “We have the right to put certain schools on there and the player has the right to appeal”.

As we saw with the O’brien case at St Joes, the appeal just dies if the school doesn’t release the kid. There is no real appeal. If the school says you can’t go to a certain team, you can’t.

Everything else he said is fine, he just should have left the appeal part off. It is misleading and seems to only be said to make it look like these players have some sort of say in the matter.

by Terpentine on Feb 14, 2012 11:25 PM EST reply actions

Chick shouldn't have continued to press the issue...

it’s standard practice. Edsall already said it was between the school and the kid, and they both agreed to keep it private. Nothing pisses me off when you say something is private, and the reporter keeps hitting away at it.

Children should be seen and not heard.

by CharlesDriesell on Feb 14, 2012 11:45 PM EST up reply actions

That's what reporters do

They want the scoop and to be the one that breaks it. Its a cut-throat world we live in.

by terpsallday on Feb 15, 2012 3:04 AM EST up reply actions

A little different

I think the O’Brien case is a bit different. I think in the O’Brien case, they actually originally agreed to let him transfer and then pulled a switcheroo after he had identified UAB. And, the worst part was that it wasn’t about UAB. It appeared they were going to take that position with any school that he chose.

Not only will DOB get to play next year, he’ll probably get to play for a very very good program. That’s really different from O’Brien who didn’t get to play at all. Yes, the use of the word “appeal” might sound misleading, but RE might have been better explaining that DOB has the option of playing for close to a hundred Div I football programs — because MD agreed to his release — but he will not be able to play for about a dozen or so schools. He can appeal the decision to play for the dozen or so schools. That would have been accurate and showed how generous MD has been. DOB gets a college degree from a great University and then gets a couple more years of eligibility at another good institution. I think he’ll be fine.

by Charles2 on Feb 15, 2012 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

I definately got the feeling

With RE’s answer to the Vandy Q, that Vandy was trying to pry DOB away while he was still a terp.

by oriolekid on Feb 15, 2012 12:22 AM EST reply actions

I think at best RE insituates that...

…but he’s RE. If he had any proof at all, he would have said so.

by Custos on Feb 15, 2012 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

With all the HEAT

Randy could have rolled over and just let DOB go where ever he wanted and avoided the Vandy thing. Glad he didn’t. He said there were “situations” he and the players agreed to keep between themselves. Maybe someone at Vandy was putting their nose into Maryland football business and he didn’t like it so he banned them as transfer options along with other ACC schools. Most coaches would do the same thing. Then Randy agrees to an interview he didn’t have to do where Chic looks to sensationalize and Randy gets called a douche because he didn’t ware a sport coat and tie. Good grief!

Stefon not Stephon

Charles what is wrong with you? Stefon by himself can not turn this program around, nor should he be expected to.It was a great signing but Football is more than a one man sport it is a team sport(That is why when you sign one great recruit and lose 3 potential starters it is a “BAD” thing). We should not put undue pressure on any recruit to be the “savior” of this program it is not fair. It is not Stefon who brought this Football program to “another level” it was Randy Edsall (76wins-80Losses career) and KA. Have you and the rest of the “Ralph destroyers” had enough already, are you satisfied yet?You have helped take this program to the lowest depths, I have ever seen in my 50 years of being a Terp football fan. So lay off the people on this blog they have a right to vent. When something you love has been so mis-handled and screwed up,you are going to be upset about it, and you should be.So I will take those people over you any day! Because you do not seem to care about the real serious problems, the program is facing. You are more interested in having your nose up the butt of RE.You care more about defending Randy Edsall than the University of Maryland’s Football program! I am an advocate for UM Football not any one person. I will support anyone who, including Edsall, who puts the program first not their personal agenda! But I reserve the right to point out when we are not moving in the right direction, as should anyone who truly cares about TERP Football!

No one here expects Stefon to turn around the program by himself

The best way to describe it is with a Tupac quote, “I’m not saying I’m change the world but I guarantee I will spark the brain that will change the world.” In other words Stefon’s commitment was needed to catch the attention of other local elites and show them “Hey, you can come to MD and have a great career. You don’t have to go to one of the CFB bluebloods to be successful.” Hell, MD has more players in the NFL than Alabama does according to ESPN.

Agreed, but

No one expected the 2010 season to be a 9 win team, and if you did you are lying. Honestly I have the same expectations for this team season as I did in the beginning of the 2010 season, not high and taking the under on wins. All I was trying to point out is how the poster was saying this is the lowest it’s been, and i agree it’s low, but RF had us there also. If we kept RF, Franklin would have left anyway, and to tell you the truth I wasn’t high on JF after 2009 anyway. We will see if he continues to build a strong program at Vandy, hope he does well. I don’t think Edsall was/is the right hire, but getting rid of RF was, and we are stuck with RE for the few years.

by PhillyTerp on Feb 15, 2012 8:42 AM EST up reply actions

I think we should have let Ralph finish out and then move on. It still seems wrong to me to fire him after a bowl season.

I was just thinking the original poster up there had somewhat of a point. Things may have seemed somewhat bleak after 2009, but I can’t remember thinking we’d have another equally bad season. I think I expected 5 wins or so, which should be the bar for Randy this year. I just don’t see how this team is going to do that.

The only problem I saw was

RF was trying to use the 2010 season as a reason for an extension, as if 2009 never happened. If he would have stayed on for another year, he was a lame duck coach, the argument was this could hurt recruiting. Hindsight being 20/20, might have been the smart move, since a 2-10 season could have killed recruiting, had Locks not been brought on. I just think a lot of people are forgetting that 2009 happened, because they got it together and had the benefit of a light schedule in 2010. I also agree that 5 wins should be the bar and I have a hard time seeing them get that, but I also felt the same way in 2010. I’m willing to let the season play itself out, cause that is really the only economic option as of now.

Kind of like how Kenny Tate ?

Diggs alot like Tate (i.e., national recruit from local WCAC powerhouse at the time). What has been the end result? Truth is that Maryland football is not today, and will not be under current adminstration, a big time football school. If Terps were truly interested in being a national football school, Leach would be our head coach today. Likewise, what happens when Diggs (“mercurial” is being nice) and Randy start butting heads?

by TerroristFistJab on Feb 15, 2012 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

Well, we know where the tampering rumors come from

you don’t have to “hate” Randy to listen to him and think he’s a real turd – I mean, you don’t hear Franklin implying that UMD is cheating . . . we’ll see if Locks can get enough guys who can play in here quick enough to make the program viable.

Also, THESE guys have to stay – Michigan had a guy who forced a mass exodus like this his first year and it never really stopped. They let him bleed for 3-4 years before finally pulling the plug, but they draw 100k per game and have a huge fan base that sticks with them win or lose so they didn’t go broke or have to drop sports. So have we got Tom Coughlin in waiting or Rich Rodriguez?

Bottom line, the argument isn’t about being a Terp fan . . . it’s about how worried you are about permanent damage to the institution beyond football (and beyond RE’s tenure, we’re now on track to lose MORE scholarships). If it’s just about losing some football games, hey, rock on Randy . . .

If "other things were said" than

RE needs to turn proof over to the NCAA so they can investigate OR shut up about it. If he keeps making weasel comments in the media WITHOUT any proof, he’s going to get UMD in trouble. It’s like the guy has a contract with Dr. Scholl’s where he can’t appear in the media without a foot in his mouth.

by dmor20 on Feb 15, 2012 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

implying that Vandy was tampering

at 1:58 he says “there are schools you compete against and schools that you may think are doing things” that make you put them on the “non-released” list. So he’s got no proof of anything but he wants to throw it out there that Vandy was cheating (since the question was “why is Vandy on the list”).

I’d have respected him a LOT more if he’d simply said “I can’t comment on that.”

No

You would had been complaining that he wasn’t transparent enough.

Fans had criticism’s about Vandy not being on the release, he had a duty to give some inkling why that decision was made.

by Custos on Feb 15, 2012 12:00 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

This is getting ridiculous

If he said he couldn’t comment there’d be people on here using that as evidence that he doesn’t think Vandy tampered. Or people calling him a jerk for never explaining things.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a person who can do no right in certain people’s eyes than Randy Edsall. And it’s a shame, because he’s our head coach, whether you like it or not. If people truly want to see this football program move forward, then you need to be able to accept the fact that Randy Edsall will be our football coach in 2012, and we need to support this team.

Several of you seriously need to watch this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kFNYuteAjA

Jesus, RE handled this interview PERFECTLY, and you all still bitch and moan.

He basically told us that every player knew Vandy was off the plate, and he treated everyone equally, he elluded to why — without being a Debbie Yow and making a statement that was going to make national news — extraordinarily classy, and far more polite than I would be.

by Custos on Feb 15, 2012 11:31 AM EST reply actions

Oh and if its RE's fault DOB is leaving, it is RE's fault we got brown and Diggs

Locksly probably played a role, but that means shit if the kids dont like Randy.

by Custos on Feb 15, 2012 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

Nope

Isn’t 20% of the moaning because he isn’t transparent enough?

by Custos on Feb 15, 2012 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

I am sorry

I posted a few more than the 5 comments you had… So maybe I do have 28% less of a life than you, but I enjoy calling out all of the people that are more pompus than RE and would wither in 99% of the situations he is in.

All one has to do is compare UCONN to FIU to see how fucking amazing RE has been. Especially considering that the Big East has much stronger compitetion than the sun belt conference….

So you my friend, need to worry about your own damn life… and perhaps worry less about mine. I like to spend some time at work on the TT boards when I am in between meetings - god fucking forbid.

People were doing the same thing to Ralph when he went 2-10

With a dozen+ players that made it onto an NFL Roster, many of which had meaningful impacts in the regular and post season performances their rookie year in the league.

Unforunately for RE, his schedule this year wasn’t as cupcake as Ralphs was and wont be next year either.

Not being

able to get Mike Leach as the coach, is where the hate is coming from.

as stated some delusional fans are thinking that UMD is a powerhouse school on the gridiron.

Whats wrong with accountability?

After all, isn’t that what the man stands for? Edsall has dug his OWN grave, no one is helping him shovel. How can you act like a freaking ostrich and see only what you want to see? Since you claim to be a good troll, why can’t you find the posts where I’ve DEFENDED the man?? Your so wrapped up in your own emotional world, you can’t see the forest for the trees. Therefore, GET A LIFE.

Joni joni joni

What grave are you speaking of. Cliche’s are a great thing but only when used correctly. I little bit of knowledge is dangerous they say, but complete ignorance is bliss. Stay blissful my fellow terp supporter but more important continue to support our coach.

Whenever Edsall says No Comment

People rag on him. Can’t have it both ways.

by terpfan92 on Feb 15, 2012 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

When he says no comment

about why he did some fool thing . . . RE is rightly criticized. When the smart move is to say “no comment” and he shoots off his mouth, he is rightly criticized AGAIN.

Wouldn’t being smart about WHEN you say “no comment” be the thing to criticize? At least then when RE was criticized he’d be right. In this case, he’s just proven he’s a boob again (right after he got a couple of good recruits and things were at least not looking down).

The guy had months to plan for this at least as a contingency – might’ve been smart to figure out what to say before sitting down to talk with the press. But for whatever he’s being paid, clearly we didn’t buy “smart.”

He let people know the basic reason as to why hes blockin Vandy

If he says no comment then everyone would hop on his dick and accuse him of doing it completely out of spite. No comment is the worst thing he could have said, but people like you will never give the man ANY credit, even during something as simple as a 2 minute interview.. its stupid, old and really annoying now.. please just shut up with all your hate on him

I hope you're not an alum

you have to learn to actually think first.

by dmor20 on Feb 15, 2012 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

if he said 'no comment,' you can't act like you wouldnt accuse him of not having a reason for blocking him.

he gave a one sentence explanation of what he’s doing. He didnt shoot off his mouth, he he didnt even mention Vandy or Franklin. He handled it perfectly. Don’t have to be an alum to see that.

I love this football talk

but lets get back to bball, regardless of the very average season.

This debate is so played out

Unfortunately this cant be settled until Sept 2012. Im already sick of it.

How do you like your Diggs?

by cSq on Feb 15, 2012 4:34 PM EST reply actions

HOLY HELL

Shut. the. FUCK. UP. with the hating on Randy Edsall.

Reminds me of that one line: "Once you hate someone, everything they do is offensive. “Look at this bitch, eating those fucking crackers like she owns the place!”, amirite?"

If he fucks shit up…get on him for that. Like you know…he fucked up some of our season, so you should bitch and moan when we’re actually playing football. Ya’ll waste so much energy hopping on his dick when he doesn’t do anything wrong. It’s tiring.

I know I’ll get flak for saying this, but if you’re going to hate, at least back it up. Don’t just post your damn comment saying “RE eats dicks.” What does that even add…?

And sorry Ben for the profanity, haha. But seriously. EFF.

Chick asked....

Randy answered. I happen to like the answer and explanation, as well as RE stating they felt like they did what needed to be done, and that players have the right to do what they think they need to do. There’s a process can be pursued if they have a desire to play at Vandy…..period.

by Terps03 on Feb 16, 2012 7:45 AM EST reply actions

I agree with you.

I didn’t like that he blocked vandy because it was a lose lose situation in my mind but after his answer here, I’m cool with it and i’m moving on. DOB will end up somewhere, only time will tell if he’s successful or not. I hope he is, but maybe last season was a reflection of how good torrey smith really was.
