Maryland Minute - 02.13.12 - More About Danny O'Brien Transferring from Maryland
Well, it's certainly been an emotional roller coaster for Maryland fans this past week; from the high of the Diggs commitment to the low of Danny O'Brien leaving. Never a dull moment in College Park.
Maryland quarterback Danny O’Brien officially leaving program - The Washington Post
According to someone who spoke with O’Brien, Edsall told O’Brien, "Danny, if you decide to do this, with all you have accomplished here, I think you are making a mistake. Really think this through."
I found that most interesting. It appears that, when this broke last week, there was truth to it. Danny told Edsall he wanted to transfer, but Edsall made him think it over. There have also been rumblings on twitter that Maryland's compliance office requested that Danny tweet he was still a Terp.

Now some good news! Check out how the Diggs commitment to Maryland boosted their class rankings for 2012.
Terps make statement by signing Diggs - College Football Nation Blog - ESPN
"It's about time Maryland made some headlines for players wanting to join the program instead of leave it."
Yup, that about sums it up.
Anjale Barrett only wants to make Maryland Terrapins better - ESPN
"Once a moody player struggling through injuries to establish her role, Anjale Barrett has become a selfless, consistent point guard who only wants to make her teammates better."
Great piece on Anjale Barrett. Go check out a Lady Terps game, they're awesome.
The Diamondback - Wrestling Secures Share of ACC Title with Win vs. Duke
I know Duck will appreciate this - the Wrestling team secured at least a share of the ACC title with a win vs. Duke.
Utah Jazz vs. New Orleans Hornets - Box Score - February 13, 2012 - ESPN
For those of you who haven't noticed, Greivis Vasquez is tearing it up since he was traded to New Orleans. Last night he had 10 assists, 12 points, 4 rebounds, and three steals. He also started and played 38 minutes.

A couple of things, IMO.
1. Yes Danny is a great guy and he was a solid Terp. BUT, he sucked last year prior to his injury, and you can only blame the coach/scheme so much for lousy passing. Danny leaving is not the end of the world.
2. It’s funny, RE was getting lots of love as he hired new coordinators and recruiting turned around, but any time something negative happens, it’s open season on him again. Give the man a chance.
3. Regarding Women’s b-ball, yes Brenda Friese is an awesome recruiter, and yes, they have awesome talent and more seems to pour in each year. But they are not an awesome team because she does not have a clue how to teach defense. She won her Natty by outscoring everyone else. Give her talent to U Conn, Duke, Tenn, etc and those coaches would have won multiple Nattys. Watch them closely and you’ll see what I mean.
4. I love this idea of the Harrison twins enrolling early. Now THAT would be awesome.
Ive been supporting Edsall the whole time, but saying Danny wasn't 'All in' was bullshit.

That's what RE said Danny said
I have my doubts.

Danny is a good kid
He acquitted himself well here (academically, and athletically) at UMD and both parties should figure out a way to part friends if he is looking to transfer out of conference….If he wants to go to Vandy and we block him it is another opportunity for coaches to negatively recruit against UMD….“look at how they treated Danny”…..the downside to letting him be with JF, if that is what he wants, is almost non existent
Just what is Maryland accomplishing by blocking O'Brian or any other transfer?
Telling him there’s 16 schools he can’t play for is BS. He was a bad fit for Crowley’s offense last season and a good fit for Franklin’s when he was here. The only thing Maryland is going to be noted for is being petty, which seems to be Edsall’s mode, when it comes to transfers and that’s going to hurt them. Let the kids leave and have a career elsewhere if it comes to pass. I wonder if Diggs would have signed with the Terps if O’Brian had said that he was leaving before the letter of intent was signed.
Every school puts stipulations on transfers
As to what schools they can transfer to, this is not an isolated incident, don’t know why you think it is.
It’s not the end of the world if DOB can’t play at Vandy. There is plenty of interest in him from other solid schools. I’m not the biggest Edsall fan in the world, but I agree with him blocking former players from transferring to Vanderbilt, for the time being. Franklin has a relationship with a number of players on the Maryland roster, and if Edsall doesn’t nip this transfer thing in the bud now, it allows Franklin to poach any player who isn’t happy with Edsall or the program.
Diggs didn't care who the QB was, if he cared about having a star QB his options wouldnt have been AU, UF, OSU and MD
all teams with question marks at QB. Any coach would block someone from going to a former employee whom they dont really like

You guys act like MD is doing something other schools dont
ALL ACC players are not allowed to transfer to other ACC schools without losing a year of eligibility and having to sit out a year. All MD has done is say you cant go to an ACC school or a future ACC (makes sense) and you cant go to a direct rival (WVU & Temple). They threw in Vandy because they felt like there was communications behind the scene possibly…. I have no issues with any of these decisions. DOB is from NC and there are plenty of schools in that area that he can go play for.

Exactly
I mean there are what 120 FBS (Div-1A) schools. All UMD is saying is that there are 16 teams within those 120 that we will not grant your release too. The kid still has plenty of choices, lets not play the woe is Danny card here.
If he is smart
he goes to App State and proves he can play for a year and then transfers up. He wouldnt have to sit out any time. Another option would be to go to ECU, an up and coming program who loves their football. If he thinks he can go play at Stanford or Michigan State he is nuts

I'm glad
i’m not the only one who feels he regressed and is not the next coming of Peyton Fucking Manning
How is it nuts? Russel Wilson walked into Wisconsin. If he can prove himself he'll get the start
Wisconsin, Mich. St and Stanford wouldnt be after a Jr. if they didnt think he could start

Not sure its apples to apples
Russel Wilson was NC State football when he was given the boot. He was coming off a very good year. The NCAA football world was shocked when NC State let him leave to go to Wisconsin. I dont think that anyone is really feeling the same about this. DOB is coming off an injury and awful numbers when he was on the field. He had lost his starting job. While that has to do with the system he was in, I think if he were truely an elite QB he could have managed to put up better numbers.

Wisconsin, Mich St., and Stanford aren't after him
Those are the schools he’s interested in, but they weren’t legally allowed to contact him until he got his release. The only schools to have contact, that we know of, are Arizona (spread), Ole Miss (spread), and Southern Florida (suck).
What a Mess
MD football just continues to be a disaster; on and off the field. Danny O had a lousy season in 2011 and rather than admit his failure he bails out. That said, who the hell knows where MD football is headed under Edsall? I cannot see MD having a much better record in 2012; so then what? Anderson needs to go away now and take Edsall with him before MD football is totally destroyed. Then again, there are many in the MD administration and regents that could care less.
He had a horrible season
And he himself said he was not committed to the program. I’d rather have the QB who is athletically better, may not have the accuracy (although no one in 2011 had that), and is 100% committed to getting better and moving on from the disaster that was last season. Also I didn’t see RE out there floating passes to the guys in the other colors. My displeasure with RE is well documented on this site, but if people think DOB will start at MSU or Stanford, they are nuts and built him up to be much more than he is.
MD might be fine if
Brown can throw an efficient slant. All he really needs to be able to do if focus on the 5-15 yard throws. Hit your playmakers in space and let their legs make the play. Get rid of the 30-40 yard passes and focus on playing it short. Hit Reid on some screens and Diggs on slants and out. Run the occasional Wheel play and they should be ok. The running game and option game should mean that Diggs will get a lot of 1 vs 1 matchups. If he beats his man off the line there shouldnt be much safety help on the inside slant.
Next year really relies on what Smash, Dash, & Flash can do next year… oh I kinda like that. Brown, Reid, & Diggs respectively.

haha. I know a thing or two about football
I got a mean flag football team down here in charlotte. We play in the same league that Matt Moore and Steve Smith played in… the league where steve smith broke his arm. 9 vs. 9 contact flag football. The one team has/had Rod Smart (better known as he hate me), Matt Moore, Steve Smith, Nick Goins, & 2 ex NFL lineman…. needless to say they are good. Gotta love playing aginst NFL players though.
I just picked up Riley Skinner to be the QB on my team. He did pretty good at Wake so we will see.

nice - keeps you connected
to your earlier playing days against some good competition.
Skinner was solid – I think he’ll handle flag football – but maybe not against pros!

Apologize to skinner for me.
I was in the 3rd row behind the wake bench for that wake game in 08 where we beat them 26-0. I said some pretty mean things, and he looked back at me a few times. It was all in good fun though, he was as solid qb.

And yes
Someone on WaPo compared him to Peyton Manning
Now we are NCST fans
Having lived near Raleigh during the Wilson fiasco, I can see this is already heading the same way.
Kids says he is going to transfer, fans say he sucked last year anyway, we are better off with our backup QB. Kid then lights it up at a new school and fans start trying to pump up their crappier QB and downplay how well kid is playing at new school. Lastly, when it becomes absolutely impossible to say your leftover QB is as good as the kid who left, attack him as a traitor.
Before I hear how Danny isn’t Wilson, CJ isn’t Glennon either. I’m sure before long I will be hearing that CJ is the one who is good as R Wilson…seen this movie before.
DOB
Will not be what Wilson was, anyone who thinks Wilson sucked the year before he transferred is nuts. DOB actually sucked last year.
Watch DOB go to Wisconsin
and lead them to good bowl games for the next 2 years. I find it a fucking joke that people on here are trying to spin this as a positive and brush it off as no big deal.
It’s a giant black eye for Rockin Randy that the best QB we’ve had in 10 years transfers 3 days after we get a commitment from Diggs.
All the Edsall apologists will crawl under a rock a year from now when we are looking for a real coach.
DOB
will have success wherever he goes. He’s a smart kid with a good arm, good size, put him in the right system with some decent weapons around him and he will flourish.
OK
Wilson in 2010
3500+ yards in 2010 with 28 TDs
DOB in 2011
1500 YDS and 7 TDs (oh and 10 ints)
But yeah, he is going to tear it up at Wiscy. Also the level of play in the Big 10 is a lot better than in the ACC, we all saw how he played against legit competition in 2010, not great, but keep thinking he will tear it up.
And I like DOB
I think he can be a decent player somewhere, but he is not 100% committed to the Terps, so he can walk. But to think he is going to go a high profile school and just completely dominate is crazy. Maybe my displeasure for Edsall hasn’t blinded me to the fact that maybe DOB isn’t elite and isn’t Wilson, never was.
I'm not saying
DOB is better than Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson is a better college quarterback (though DOB might end up being the better pro prospect, but that’s another discussion).
I’m saying that I believe DOB will succeed because he’s got all the tools to do so.
You are comparing apples and oranges. Russell Wilson’s senior year in a system he’d been in forever vs. DOB’s sophmore year under a new (and incompetent) coach and OC. If you want to start throwing stats around— Russell Wilson and DOB were both ACC Freshman of the Year, so they should have similar career paths, right?
Were more for the op, who said people said RW sucked before he left. Was the regression part of the system, maybe, was it the loss of WRs, maybe. I’m also of the opinion that if you are that good, you overcome those things.
by PhillyTerp on Feb 14, 2012 11:25 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Wilson
Struggled his last season with NCST, not to the degree that DOB did but he didn’t have to work in an entirely new offense and receivers that would make Andrew Luck look bad. If DOB looked awful how would you describe CJ’s play?
We are already getting into delusional ex-girlfriend mode now that we have been dumped by DOB. We didn’t really like him anyway…
Wait to you see how we rationalize away how well he plays where ever he lands.
More awful, but at least he brings a different dimension
I’ve been saying this stuff for months now.
I wish DOB
Nothing but the best, but I just don’t see him being the next Russell Wilson. Some may, I don’t.
Who said he was?
I am talking about our reactions to this as fans. It’s the same as NCST fans and they were flayed for it. The situations are similar, not the QBs.
I think DOB will go to a football school in a big conference and succeed. Then we will say the same things State fans did…it’s the system, he has all that talent around him, he would have still been mediocre here.
OK
But the reacted to it foolishly, Wilson didn’t suck in 2010. DOB did.
You know Edsall
wanted DOB to stay. He was right to tell the kid he was making a mistake and think long and hard about it. Huge mistake IMHO. Sure Locks is going to run the ball and CJB is probably better suited for that scheme but DOB was a ACC star his first year and he could have built on that rather than go somewhere and start over. I don’t get it. I support Coach’s decision to let him go if he wants to leave but to not permit him to go to another ACC school where every time he would play against Terps the game announcers would be digging up old bones. Who needs to hear that re-hashed? As for J. Franklin he was cool as a Terp but he is long gone and now a competitor and Maryland doesn’t owe him a damn thing. Glad to see Randy E play some hard ball! DOB died in Crowton O but he is gone and Terps just landed the 35 best recruiting class in the nation after an off year. Wish DOB well, he was good for Maryland and Maryland was very good for him. We have all made big mistakes and DOB just made his.
Did anyone happen to read the hack-job of an article on Stoglin in the Diamondback?
It RIPPED into Stoglin, which is fair game after the twitter incident I suppose, but it read like it was written by an angry ex-gf.
are you referring to this?
http://www.diamondbackonline.com/walsh-bad-shots-then-worse-potshots-1.2776982
If so, I agree with it for the most part. I think you could replace stupidity in the last sentence with immaturity, but otherwise it was pretty spot on. Stoglin was pouting on the bench when he was pulled rather than rooting his team on. He needs to rearrange his priorities from getting his to helping the team win no matter how it happens.
The article went a little too far in my opinion.
He had every right to be frustrated. Does he need to grow up? Yes but to say he hasn’t been there for this team is unfair. He has put this team on his back. Clemson??? anyone. He definitely needs to mature, and he did apologize and I think it was sincere. But to say he didn’t have a right to be frustrated after the beat down we were taking and the double teams he was getting is really unfair. We need to give him a chance to show he can be a team player, remember he is a sophomore. And as much as I love mosley, he dissapears offensively toooooo much, and stoglin is left with faust, who is a freshman, to help him out.
by nmcvicker03 on Feb 14, 2012 12:52 PM EST up reply actions
I'm not saying he doesn't put his team on his back
But he does need to grow up some. The shots they were showing of him on the bench — he just had the look on his face of complete disgust at Turgeon and was pissed at him the entire time rather than rooting his team on, which probably would of went a long way in Turgeons book.
I like Stoglin, and I want him to mature from the incident. I think he can, and hope he will. The article probably does go a bit too far, but from the way he acted it isn’t unwarranted.
I wanted to mention this article,
while Stogs still needs to grow up, this article was a prety unfair evaluation. He pouted on the bench, said some things he later regretted, and is going to take some shots for it. Fair enough.
Yet, this guy goes on to attack his game, saying Stogs hasn’t been able to step up and win games, etc. Anybody who has watched a single game this year should know the only reason we are in any of these games to begin with is because of Stogs. He takes bad shots and is still learning to share the ball and become a more complete player, but take him off this team and let’s see where we’re at in the ACC. 2-8? 1-9? Saying things like “it’s increasingly obvious that Stoglin just isn’t ready to be the go-to guy,” is bullshit. He is the
Agree.
this dude was way out of line, especially with that statement. I don’t know if he was mad, or just trying to get people to read his article. I hope he has to look stoglin in the face at some point.
He really came off like he had no clue what he was talking about.
A lot of his points were just sort of irrational rambling, with nothing to support them. He acted like this was a typical Stoglin performance, when it was most definitely an aberration. It felt like he wrote it during the last 5 minutes of that game when he was angry, and then sent it in.
You know what it reminded me of? When a national columnist writes an article criticizing a team that they just saw for the first time. They have to make assumptions and try to pin down that team based on that 1 performance. Except at least the national columnist has an excuse, they have to cover a million different things. What’s this guy’s excuse?
Blake is the reason they need a PG

lol - too funy

kudos to the one responsible! drinks on, well, not me.
You make my pee-pee maker t-t-tingle.
My two cents.
I, for one, am sad to see Danny go, but I have no hard feelings about his decision. There’s not a person on this board who probably wouldn’t have done the same thing. He was recruited by Franklin; knew about the Head Coach in Waiting deal; and was probably excited about spending his college career at Maryland. He wins ACC Rookie of the Year, only to see his head coach let go and the guy that recruited him leave as well. Say what you will, but I’m sure it had a huge effect on him. Give Danny credit; after Edsall was hired, DOB was the first one to support the hire and tell everyone that he was ready to learn the playbook and get to work. That’s what a leader does. He even said during this past season (after he’d been benched) that Edsall was a great leader. Bash the kid for his decision, but you can’t fault him for trying to keep the ship afloat.
We have to remember; these are young kids we sit on this board and talk about. They’re being pulled here and there and everywhere by family, friends, coaches, etc. We tend to criticize college athletes for the decisions they make, saying they’re stupid for this or they’re stupid for that, and it’s totally unfair. They’re human, folks. I’d be willing to bet that Danny is probably very torn about his decision, but in the end, he has to do what’s best for himself; and I’d be willing to bet we all have made a decision like that from time to time.
I would like to thank Danny and the others who have transferred/left the program for the time they spent here. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for them, but as we’ve been told since we were kids, things happen for a reason.

The thing that makes it easy for me to wish him well is he's graduating
Doesn’t go against our NCAA grad % numbers, and basically, he did his job – he should be going to college to learn and get a degree, and he did that in 3 years. Kudos to him. Wish it worked out here, but wish him the best anyway.

Thanks for the wrestling article
My HS team made MPSSAA 1A/2A State Duals this weekend, and we had our conference seeding meeting Sunday, so I didn’t have time to throw up a FanShot. Thanks for picking up the slack. :)
Coach McCoy did a great job of getting seniors who aren’t starters match-ups for Senior Day against a rather pitiful Duke team. It’s the second year he’s done it, and it’s a really classy move.
With the latest Coaches’ Rankings and RPI report, UMd should get 6 of its 10, and possibly 8 of its 10 wrestlers into the National Championships. That’s a pretty good accomplishment for an ACC school.
