temper the hate for coach K,,,,a little..smiles,,,.
just wanted to drop a quick note.,,,u don't have to like coach K but thought i'd share this quick story.i just moved back into this area after living in the LOS ANGELES area. i am a BIG terp fan that has lived in the LOS ANGELES area for 28 yrs. i ran into coach k at a shopping center in LA right after we hired GARY. as an X pro athelete i admire what coach K has accomplished. i don't have to love him either,,,,,but i walked up and introduced myself and said i admired his work but i LOVE the TERPS. he shook my hand and said thank u and then he said that maryland hired a great coach (GARY) that would turn maryland s basketball team around. that GARY was a GREAT coach and GREAT person,,,and i should be excited for what was going to happen for maryland!!!!!! he didn't have to say anything to me or speak so glowingly about GARY,,,,,but he did!! so that is why u don't have to love him,,,,but that speaks volumes about him.......GO TERPS,,,,,,

That's the coaching fraternity
And its all coach speak. Besides John Cheaney and Calipari, show me a coach that would publicly say a bad thing about another coach. Having said all that, I hate K. For the way he manipulates the refs and the game. I also hate K, because everyone thinks that he is a god like figure and does not cheat. Trust me when I say this, even coach K tips the line when it comes to recruiting.
He is an amazing coach, and an amazing man. That much is for sure.
As a Maryland fan, I am honored to detest him on the court though— I think it shows a level of respect. The simple fact that people get fired up about playing Duke is proof of that.
Disagree
Can’t stand it when he scares the refs to give him calls, the flopping and the douchebaggery. No matter what coach k will always be in the top 3 of my most hated people in sports.

Coach Shashefsky
I will like the guy after he retires….until then…
My thoughts
For right now, he coaches a team I don’t particularly care for. Once he’s not a coach, I’ll judge him as a man.
And I’m pretty sure he’d be judged quite well – even I have to admit that the guy is a phenomenal person.
Gary considers him a good friend, he built that program himself, and has never been labeled a cheater
Thats enough for me.
Respect

Thanks for posting this article.
I never realized they’d played against each other in college.

K is a God at Duke
The only thing I can say is that he always puts students first, the way it should be. When he retires, soon I hope, Duke BBall will never be the same, irregardless of who the next coach is. Without K, Duke is just another UVA, always just mediocre.
a bad feeling tells me
they’ll snub the Hobbits and Capel and hire Stevens – just a bad feeling…

What makes you think this?
Duke has had good coaches before Coack K. Two of Duke’s prior coaches had great records: Vic Bubas 213–67 (106–32) and Harold Bradley 167–78 (94–37). Several of the others were pretty good too. They aren’t perfect every season, but have had a tradition of winning for quite a while. I expect they’ll hire another good coach after Coach K.
Assumption is the mother of all @#%-ups.

They won't be going away
They will either promote, Steve Wojciechowski (former Duke player and current Associate Head Coach) or they will make a big hire. Though I really wouldn’t be surprised if they just went with Wojciechowski, he’s basically K’s right hand man, understands recruiting, X and O’s and is a Dukie through and through.
@nkeninitz
makes sense
because a lot of history shows the first coach after a legend like K, if they’re not an established coach, will most likely have trouble in their run.

This says more about Gary
and how much other coaches respected him than it does about Rat. The day the Rat hangs it up is going to be a great day for all Terp fans.
Don't hate K
and give him credit for all he has accomplished. He said a lot of nice things about Gary. Hey he wants to win and that is what they pay him for I get that. Still got nothing for the so called “Cameron Crazies” and Dook students in general.
who has the most redeaming value?
rat face, jj, plumlees, schyerface, rivers,?
I’ll try and think of others later
You delusional powder puffs.........
Duke is the enemy and coach K is their leader. You have every right and duty to hate the man… but not the person. He is a great person and mentor…. BUT!!!, He has been a stone in our sneakers since day one. So give us an Effn break with your MothaEffn Man Crush Bromance Fantasy Fest with that Sonuva B Azzwipe sh1thed, devil worshiping, bad hair day poster child, American Idol wannabe Coach K……….. Aaaaaw!!! That felt so good. Time to go to church now fellas and cleanse my soul from the thoughts of that piece of sh1t, sour faced, Munchkin Sounding follow the Yellow Brick Road, goody two shoes, no good mutha……………………………………………

Great person? Not in my book.
I still can’t forgive Coach K for not nipping the lacrosse fiasco in the bud. He went to the team and expressed support and then showed none as the idiot administrators took the word of a drug addicted hooker at face value. K could have stopped the witch hunt and forced an unbiased investigation if he wanted to, and he didn’t. That says a lot to me about whether he should be respected as a “great person.”
What's the ratio 1000 to 1 of his good and bads?
We hate the coach and not the man. Whats in your closet? Crack that door open a little……….

Get off of it
The poor Duke lacrosse players, blah, blah, blah. Let’s re-evaluate what happened. A bunch of rich white lacrosse players, many underaged, threw a party off-campus, where there was alot of drinking and hired strippers. They left the one black team member out, and specified the dancers be black. Then they were obnoxious and made racist remarks (supported by the statements of BOTH dancers) to the point the dancers were leaving. Then, one decided to come back and try to set them up with a false rape claim. As much as I hate to see anyone falsely accused of rape, I see no reason to treat those scumbags like they were inncocent victims.
Everything would have been fine if that Sister didn't have a Blister

Get off of what?
I wasn’t defending the lacrosse players. Read what I said. I was attacking the administration for conducting a witch hunt and K for not using his influence to force an unbiased investigation after he pledged to support the lacrosse team.
WAR, HUH WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR
ABSOLUTELY NUTHIN’ ! Maryland faces Duke in the sports arena – an entertaining if hardly earth moving venue. If you must view the contest as battle, exhort your team to put forth their best effort. Urge your general to try to intimidate the officials as avidly as the opposition. In the end, walk off the court with grace and honor in victory or defeat. I see no need to disrespect the man or his accomplishments. Ask yourself this, if Coach K had been at MD since 1980 and had the same accomplishments, would you hate him still?

It would be wrong of me not to hate him.
Duke represents everything I don’t believe in… elitism being a big part of that. Contempt for Coach K originates in the very fabric of this country’s fucked up social structure.
It’s never been a game to me… It’s a battle between the 99% and the 1%, good and evil.

This!!!!!!!!
They represent everything wrong with this country. Elitism, favoritism to the wealthy, and just general douchebaggery. I hate Dook and always will. By default, I hate their leader no matter his character or good deeds. Eff the Rat!

LOL "the 1%"
Keep the politics away from it, but let’s not act like rich people don’t help Maryland. Plank being the obvious example.
It's not simply rich vs. poor
It’s a matter of entitlement. I’m not getting political, I’m a moderate who’s sick of the elite, liberal or conservative, that run this country… Duke being a breeding ground for such…
That said, Plank was definitely on the entitled side of things… He grew up across the street from my grandparents and needless to say I am aware of the opportunities he had.

I'm with you on being sick of elitists in this country.
But, you have to walk a fine line with the politics of envy as well. Neither is healthy, imo.
by 1 proud terp on Feb 12, 2012 9:53 PM EST up reply actions
Agreed
It’s not envy as much as it’s resentment. Many would argue the resentment is driven by envy and that may be true, but for now I’m a middle class student attending a large public university and I feel obligated to hold true to my side of the “battle”.
by Joe Bradshaw on Feb 14, 2012 5:53 PM EST up reply actions
As a student, are you striving to be an achiever in this society
or are you content to be resentful? And should you resent a person who has success, or should you be motivated to compete harder to reach the same level that you are currently resentful of? Time wasted in envy is time lost in pursuit of your own individual happiness.

Stop The Hate
I thought for a moment I was reading a Mike Wise WaPo story asking the reader are you sure you hate Coach K. Do we really have to stop the hate? Let us hate the enemy and feel good about it. I do not care what good he has done. He pulls in the top shooters every year and they write what a great coach he is. What a bunch of bull.

The best evaluation of Coach K's value
…is to think what the ACC would be like if he retired tomorrow.
