WBB: #8 Maryland vs. #6 Miami 2/12 at 2:50 on ESPN2
Your #8 Maryland women's basketball team will be hosting #6 Miami tomorrow (Sunday) in a very big game. Tip-off is at 2:50 and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2, so if you've never seen your Lady Terps play this season, here's your chance! It's also the Play4Kay game so I assume pink will be involved in the uniforms.
The Hurricanes and the Terps have clashed once before this season, back on Jan. 12 when MD fell, 75-63. In that one, Miami player Riquana Williams dropped 34 on the Terps, including shooting 8-14(!) from three. For those unfamiliar with ACC women's basketball, Williams is part of a Miami duo that could both very well wind up First Team ACC. Williams averages 15.6 ppg, while Shenise Johnson averages 16.7 ppg and 7.8 rebounds. Johnson is also probably Alyssa Thomas' biggest challenge in the race for ACC POY. Miami also has Morgan Stroman, who scores 12.9 ppg (*EDIT: No they don't. Just realized Stroman tore her ACL a few weeks ago and is out for year), and Stefanie Yderstrom, who averages 9.9 ppg and had some key threes in the earlier Terps/Hurricanes game.
Maryland and Miami feature the Top 2 scoring offenses in the ACC (Maryland is 1st), so both defenses will be put to the test. Last time these two met, Miami out-rebounded the Terps by 8, even though Maryland leads the ACC in rebounding margin (+13.7). The Terps need to do better on the glass this time. They also need to take good care of the ball - Miami leads the ACC in steals per game (14.1). Anjale Barrett (the Terps starting PG) has had both great games and games where she's made several bad decisions, let's hope tomorrow is the former.
I'm sure the Terps will be looking for a big game from the ACC's leading scorer, Alyssa Thomas. But other players need to step up too, whether it be Laurin Mincy, Tianna Hawkins, Lynetta Kizer, or someone else. Hawkins and Alicia DeVaughn need to anchor the glass early. If they can get the balanced scoring they got against Clemson, this team will be tough to stop. But they have to play solid defense too, because if there's any team in the ACC that can win a scoring shootout against the Terps, it's Miami.
With all that being said, I'm looking forward to what I think is going to be a great game. Miami is 10-1 and in 2nd place in the ACC, so we really need this one. Go Terps!

Yes, i'm excited to see if the terps can recover from their loss
miami gave the terps their first loss of the season. hopefully they come back hungry and want the win. This will be perfect for the terps to get a win.
I hope Hawkins has another big night like she had against Georgia Tech, Mincy has one of her better 3 point shooting nights, and Thomas being Thomas of course.
A nice balanced game with multiple people scoring in double figures would be great this game as well.
If the Terps are able to limit their turnovers - They'll win.
There should be a good, loud crowd helping to rattle the canes too. It’s payback time. Go Terps!
Thanks for the heads up...I'm definitely going to watch the Terps today
I live in south Florida and reffed a couple of Riquana Williams games when she was in high school. She can definitely play and can really shoot the ball. It should be a great game.
So the ESPN2 broadcast is regionally, not nationally
For some reason they’re going to be showing like 8 womens basketball games today. But people in MD area should be fine, and I assume Florida too? Not 100% sure though. But, it IS on ESPN3 too.
MD is up 68-65 with 3:50 to play
This one is going down to the wire…let’s go Terps!!
Tough loss.
Miami really came and took that one away at the last second. But you’re right, 21 turnovers and 67% FTs won’t cut it. I feel like the Duke game in a week is now a must-win: for ACC tourney seeding purposes (we are tied with GT and they have a much easier schedule left), for NCAA tourney seeding purposes (keep chances of #2 seed alive), and just for the general morale of this team. Right now they have no wins over Top 10 teams, and Delaware (#12) is their biggest win. Gotta beat Duke and get some confidence to make a run in the ACC Tournament. They are capable of winning that, but it’ll be tough and changes need to be made to do so.
again..
ill say it.. this team just does not have that killer instinct. Why didnt AT have the ball down 1 with 37 secs left? You tell me. Someone please.
Hurricanes have our number with both men's and women's BBall teams
But the women gave the game away today. AT should have had the ball, she’s our go-to when the chips are down.
Miami Game
Yes, changes need to be made…we need an offense that is more than run and gun. Our half-courts sets stink. We also need a point guard is not an offense killer. AB dribbles from side to side while 4 players watch. The swedish girl also schooled her. I don’t understand why Brenda “$330,000 per year” Frese didn’t stick Lauren Mincy on her. Mincy shut her down after she had abused AB for 18. Then she switched back and AB gave up 8 more points in closing minutes.
I think ATs injury is worse than we’ve been told — her hand is still wrapped and I think it is affect her offensive game. She was 4-8 from the line and is usually an 80 percent shooter.
Kizer played a great game, but she missed 3 layups in the last few minutes of the game.
I don’t think this team goes far this year unless Brenda makes a change at point guard.
Yderstrom isn't Miami's best player, that's why
Yes she was having a career game, but you keep Mincy on her too long and then who guards Johnson/Williams? Williams lit us up for 34 last time and both her and Johnson will be All-Americans. I fear either of them going off more than Yderstrom. It’s pick your poison, and unfortunately Yderstrom seriously stepped up yesterday and created even more of a problem.
She was yesterday...
Your point is well taken, but you have to try to slow her down. Maybe the others start lighting it up, but we’ll never know. The fact is AB is too slow to defend and commits way too many TOs for a first rate PG. I’d say she can’t run an offense, but I’m not sure Brenda has an offense other than run and shoot.
