The Official #Stefonukkah/#Diggscision2012 Open Thread

Word is that Diggs is announcing at Looney's. In College Park. So I guess the fact that he's not announcing on CSN isn't such a big deal, then.

For minimal spillover, keep your conspiracy theories, out-of-control celebrations, horrible meltdowns, and other such lovable nonsense in this thread.

Are you serious that he is announcing from Looneys?

He’d be the absolute biggest Dick ever if he announced from Looneys and did not commit to MD.

So now that I got that out, I can’t wait for the decision tonight!

I'm sure

I’m happy he is coming here rather than FL. But just look at the second comment in this thread and you could envision an absolute meltdown if he picked the hated Gators.

by jfowler21012 on Feb 10, 2012 9:27 AM EST up reply actions

The hated gators?

I have nothing against the Gators at all, I’m actually happy his other three finalists are SEC schools rather than ACC schools. If we don’t land him, at least we don’t have to play against him.

I was just pointing out that it’d be a complete dick move to go to a College Park (UMD) bar and announce for another school

by djcarv2005 on Feb 10, 2012 9:31 AM EST up reply actions

Trying to translate

I think “jfowler21012” is an Auburn fan (judging by his response to the accusation that “AU fans started [ripping Diggs] last night”).

Thus, his “I’m sure” post is just meant to say that he is glad that Diggs is going to Maryland rather than Florida (because he hates Florida, as an Auburn fan).

Finally, his “meltdown” point was basically to say “don’t get high and mighty Maryland fans, you too might meltdown if he picked another school, i.e., Florida.”

I could be wrong, but this is how I’m piecing it all together, haha.

by bshock on Feb 10, 2012 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

well...if you put it like that

Then it makes sense. I still stick by my post though that I’d be angrier that he moved locations to a CP bar and picked another school than if he were to of stayed with the CSN announcement and picked another school. So yes, I guess he would be right that we’d have some in a meltdown point at how classless that would be

Like there weren't MD fans ripping Nate Britt, McGary, etc.

How can you be excited, getting 5 stars is second nature in Gainesville.

I’d figure you’d be rather ho-hum, win some/lose some, we’ll get ours next year. For us, on the other hand, excited doesn’t quite do it justice. If he commits, tune in to CNN tonight and expect to see our goalpost on Rt. 1 surrounded by a half-dozen flaming couches. That’s how we show our “excitement” LOL

Back in the day Florida was a major rival!

In fencing! I spent 4 years fencing the hated Gators in a very spirited rivalry.

I like Turtles!

by RedTurtle on Feb 10, 2012 12:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

It was funny. Because a few rows behind me, there was a UF fan and a Maryland fan arguing over basketball.

The Gators of course were like a year and a change removed from a National Championship Game appearance, and Maryland was a very good team that year (ending up winning the National Championship).

Anyway, after like 10 minutes of arguing, all of the sudden someone yells “Just kick his….”

They were practically falling over rows, it was so violent.

by FlaGators on Feb 10, 2012 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

Ha. Yeah, I can’t remember who won exactly. Though they were both taken away by security rather quickly.

Yeah it would be a shame if he sat in Looney's in College Park and DIDN'T commit to US

Wouldn’t that be the biggest slap in the face? I’m not a huge football fan though I am a HUGE TERP fan, so I know how important Diggs is to this recruiting class.

If I were a betting man ( and I am definitely not), I’d say he’s going to be a TERP. However I will hold me elation until I hear it from Diggs himself.

Starting to feel good

about that this might just happen. Maryland fans showed him a lot of love at the UNC game and as Djcarv2005 said I don’t know how you go to College Park to announce and not commit to Terps. Diggs will be an instant star at Maryland and he can get to the next level as a Terp just as easy as anywhere. Local sports media is going to stay all over his game. After years of being so close on several 5 star guys Terps are over due. Glad his mom likes Randy as has been reported. Can’t over state what Locks means to this team. Highly respected locally and kids want to play for him. I am wasted until this gets done. Hope to hear Diggs has invited Locks to Looney’s and ask him to bring a Terps hat with him. Go Terps!

If Diggs comes here, how much does this help us with Jalen Tabor and his stay at home movement?!

by djcarv2005 on Feb 10, 2012 8:39 AM EST reply actions

Well...

This might very well be Maryland’s biggest football recruit ever if he in fact does commit. It would also give us the best players from arguably the best football school in the state (I don’t pay enough attention to HS FB so I could be wrong on this).

Next, if these guys show some success in year one, specifically Diggs, then the flood gates will open up. It will show that the big time local recruits can come in and get playing time early and be successful. They would also be remembered as the recruits that turned the football program around.

So basically, this is where the stay at home movement really begins.

He rolls into Looney’s in a full MD Pride uniform, flanked by Locks, Wes Brown, Zach Dancel, Jalen Tabor, Shaq Cleare and the Harrison twins. They all arrive in a stretch hummer driven by Dalonte Hill. Book it.

Suddenly, Terps got swag.

by ocbterp on Feb 10, 2012 8:48 AM EST reply actions

I will say I saw Diggs play vs Dematha as a sophomore and he was by far the best player on the field

And that was with that linebacker GC had that went to Florida and the DM running back that went to Iowa and a bunch of other big time guys. Diggs is without a doubt a can’t-miss prospect. 100 percent chance he’s NOT a bust wherever he goes. He’s like Ed Reed-always there making plays.

They pretty much narrow it down to Florida and MD. Although..I don’t like all of the facts they put in favor of Florida…it really sounds like Florida based on that article, but he’s announcing at Looneys so I think MD.

There are many Gators fans who are saying “Diggs will make or break the class.”

by FlaGators on Feb 10, 2012 9:31 AM EST up reply actions

Make or break the class?

Dude, you’re sporting the #4 recruiting class in the nation. At best you go from 4th best to 2nd best.

This “makes or breaks” our class as we go from 39th (ish? not sure where we are now) to top 30/25 (who knows?)

by Terps12 on Feb 10, 2012 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

We can get there for basketball

I don’t think we ever will for football. I’d like to just be consistently top 25ish recruiting wise in football.

by Terps12 on Feb 10, 2012 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

Agree

If we can make it into the top 30 for football that works for me. There are at least 15 schools that are nearly always going to be in the top 20 … Maryland is nowhere close to that point.

Assumption is the mother of all @#%-ups.

I don’t think they realize how close to campus Looney’s is (back patio is a view of campus) and that Diggs won’t make it out alive (at 6pm on a Friday, in CP) if he picks UF.

Because if he goes to Looneys, and announces for another school, thats a classless move. He would be hated. I can’t imagine he would do that. I can’t imagine those close to him would let him do that. It would be disrespectful to his family and friends, his home state, his boy Wes Brown, Locksley. I just can’t see it.

If he announces another school other than Maryland AT Looney's...

…they better have the riot police ready.

I’m live about 10 mins from Olney and its a solid 30 mins, closer to 50 in rush hour traffic. If he goes out of his way to announce in College Park and then chooses another school, that’s classless. I’ll never fault a recruit for a decision they make (or even a player for the most part) about where to go to school, but they can certainly get criticized for doing it in a classless manner.

by Dave Tucker on Feb 10, 2012 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

+1

I’ll never knock someone for where they want to go to school. Uf he was announcing from GC or somewhere in Olney, and picked somewhere, I’d have no problem. Just don’t do go out of your way to do in in CP, from what I’ve read he is surrounded by people with their heads on strait and I hope they have advised him to avoid pulling a Logan-El.

by PhillyTerp on Feb 10, 2012 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

He could easily be announcing from GC or the Olney Greene Turtle if he didn’t want to ruffle any feathers and no Maryland fan could have a problem with that.

HAHAHAHHAHAHAH - Florida Page. Diggs to MD
If the report from the Washington Post is true then we will miss out on another top notch recruit. Stefon Diggs appears to be ready to spurn the top notch programs of Auburn, Florida, and Ohio State to stay home and play for Maryland, who by the way, had a horrible season. The announcement was expected to come tomorrow evening but that might not be happening any more.

I was worried about this happening. We lost Hamilton to similar circumstances and now it appears the same thing will happen with Diggs. I posted in a thread here last week that I thought he would choose Florida, with Maryland finishing second, Ohio State 3rd, and Auburn 4th. Flip the first 2 teams and it appears that’s what it’s coming down to. Again, no reports are true until final but this is the Washington Post not some random small town source in the middle of North Dakota. If this is indeed true this will be the 800th time in the Will Muschamp era that we finish 2nd to a really good prospect. I know a lot of AA’ers think that’s a good thing, but I don’t. I think it sucks. What does second place get you exactly? Well, it gets you as much as 80th place does, which is absolutely nothing.

THAT was one of the most classless moves ever

If Diggs chose anyone but MD from Looneys, it would also be classless. And he would certainly open himself up for criticism and it would be warranted, IMO.

by Dave Tucker on Feb 10, 2012 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

I think the difference is

Diggs has/is really torn about where he wants to go and Logan-El knew he was going to sitr the pot.

I have to think that those close to Diggs, know how the Logan-El situation went down, and are advising him against doing anything like that.

In the end I guess only he knows what he will do.

Don't read too far into the tweets

He is doing it to try to put some suspense into it, he likes the attention.

A lot of people are already mad at him (OSU and Auburn fans we’ve seen lash out) for not choosing there school, that is how recruiting goes for 5 stars.

The “even my own city might be mad at me” just makes it appear that all schools are up in the air. As many have posted, the most classless thing that he could do is to change his venue from CSN to Looneys and then not announce for MD.

by UMTerp2010 on Feb 10, 2012 11:30 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Honestly

If I’m Diggs the choice is easy:

Choice 1: Go play in the SEC, be just another great athlete in a league full of them. Get absolutely destroyed on every play by bigger, faster, harder hitting defenses than anywhere else in college football. Higher chance of injury as a result of those defenses. Be stuck in the depth chart behind 4 and 5 star talent. Wait atleast a year or 2 before making a serious impact.

Choice 2: Go play in the ACC close to home for a school that desperately needs elite athletes at skill positions. Step on the field from day 1 and have a chance to log major playing time / statistics as a freshman. Go up against defenses that are a little more forgiving and thus will give you the ability to display that elite athleticism while having a better chance to avoid injury. Become a kid who stayed home and turns into a legend.

by terpskin on Feb 10, 2012 11:34 AM EST reply actions

Also with choice #2

Got to a school that’s had three receivers in the past 6 years drafted in the first 2 rounds of the NFL draft. Yes, I’m counting Vernon Davis as a receiver. Tight ends do catch the ball…

by duck on Feb 10, 2012 11:41 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I think this line of thinking

is a bit flawed. I don’t think elite level kids are hoping to go against softer defenses for fear of injury. Do they want to be the best at their position? Reach the league the most prepared? I don’t think that being the best player on a team day one is really the best route to that but again, this isn’t all about NFL projection, playing time or defenses. It’s about where he feels the most comfortable. If that is Maryland, by all means I wish the kid the absolute best but his decision process will most certainly not revolve around being the man on day one and playing soft defenses. Besides, if he is the man day one, he is going to have more touches from day one. Injuries aren’t about how good defenses are, it’s about how many hits you are going to take. It’s all moot because kids can’t think about that stuff and definitely don’t put that in their mind w/r/t recruitment, that’s crazy.

Re: players in the draft, every school can point to that, especially if you are talking about UF, AU and OSU.

by Onestatewest on Feb 10, 2012 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

Ok

I hear what your saying. My point is— have you seen an SEC game lately? It’s a different sport. I guess my thinking is at a place like Maryland he will stand out, at a place like Auburn or FL he is just another kid which elite talent. The injury thing is a lesser matter than I doubt he’s taking into account, but from my perspective seeing the difference in speed, hitting, strength, overall brutality of SEC football, it’s hard to ignore.

by terpskin on Feb 10, 2012 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that he will have the ability to shine

bright and early on at MD but I think that has it’s distinct drawbacks. Getting doubled, having no real competition at his position are not automatically conducive to getting better. When people say that there is depth elsewhere, it’s one thing if the team is absolutely loaded at a position but just having other great talent around isn’t a bad thing, nor is it a deterrent to a lot of kids. That competitiveness often breeds growth and success. Again, the things that fans (like me of course) come up with for so called “pro-con” lists w/r/t recruiting destinations, generally don’t play much of a factor at all. It’s more like “my mom wants me to go there, I like the coaches”. Great get for MD (which it certainly appears to be the case) no matter the circumstances.

by Onestatewest on Feb 10, 2012 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

If this kid is dumb enough to announce he is signing anywhere but Maryland at a CP bar, I don’t want him.

So, even ESPN’s reporters are hedging their bets. The story is behind a paywall.

by terpfan92 on Feb 10, 2012 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

Still can't give edsall credit huh?

Clearly you haven’t paid attention to the entire Diggs recruiting process. We aren’t even in the hunt for Diggs without Edsall. Locksley came in and sealed it, yes, but Diggs wouldn’t have even been close if it wasn’t for EDSALL. I’m so sick of these idiots hating on Edsall.GET OVER IT!! He has done a lot of good for the program in the past 3 months. Give credit where credit is due.

by mprice7umd on Feb 10, 2012 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

The Edsall bashing is truly getting old

by UMTerp2010 on Feb 10, 2012 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

At some point the Edsall bashing should end though.

What else do you want him to do? He hired Lox and Stewart, he’s pulling in the best player in the state, he’s taken the abuse and answered tough questions from Andy Pollin/Steve Czaban, he’s building something special here, he preaches responsibilty and ethics to his kids. Honestly, all of the hate thrown his way has endeared him to me even more. He’s like Tom Coughlin, all the fans and media were hating him, but he got his players to buy in, and he ends up winning.

Now, if he ends up making bone-headed coaching moves next Fall, by all means, criticize him. But last year seems like eons ago, especially with all of this momentum building. I don’t see how you could still hating at this point.

Agreed

My original comment was part sarcasm

by PhillyTerp on Feb 10, 2012 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

Also

You must not have paid attention to the recruiting process for Diggs, we were dropped back in November. It wasn’t until Locks came in and started to clean up the cluster fuck Edsall made, that we got back in the hunt for Diggs. Get a clue, then talk.

by PhillyTerp on Feb 10, 2012 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

First of all, let's wait to give anyone credit until this is in the bag.

Because, you know, it’s not… yet.

Second, Edsall has done extraordinarily little to earn the benefit of the doubt around here. Have the past few months been an improvement? Of course. If he made the decision to bring in Locksley, then he deserves praise. But most of the good feeling surrounding the program at the moment has stemmed directly from Locksley’s presence. Prior to that, there was no indication that we were anywhere near crawling out of the swamp Edsall dragged us into.

But finally, get the negativity out of this thread. Go have a beer and relax – enjoy what is shaping up to be a great night.

by Mike S. on Feb 10, 2012 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

I'm with ya on the last part.

But factor in the fact that KA was the one who wanted Crowton hired, not Edsall. Also, they swung and missed on Randy Shannon for DC last year, and only promoted Bradford as a desperation move, because of the timing of the season. There are several reasons last year was a disaster, and yes RE shares in some of the blame. But if you are going to fundamentally change the football program(which a new coach has every right to do), then you can expect some bumps along the way.

I think there was a consensus around here that Ralph had peaked(I still love the big guy, btw), and we wanted more, wanted a different approach to recruiting, etc. I’m not a huge RE cheerleader, by any means, but constant harping at my HC who is making obvious moves of improvement after his FIRST year, will make me quite defensive of him.

by 1 proud terp on Feb 10, 2012 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I don't really disagree with anything you're saying.

And I’ve noted that, although I still have reservations, I’m fully supportive of the efforts he’s been making recently.

by Mike S. on Feb 10, 2012 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

I can't speak for others, but I'm kidding around

I’m not on the fire Edsall bandwagon. I was joking more about the fact that whenever we seem close or something’s a done deal, something gets messed up (see: Miller, Sean and Leach, Mike). Definitely not hating on Edsall, just trying to keep a light mood until the announcement. I think Edsall deserves a chance to prove himself next season with the new coordinators.

No one wants to see Diggs as a Terp any more than I do and I am excited like everyone else. Consider he gets to play for Locks, and with pals from HS, instant star in the ACC with the best media coverage in the country at Maryland where his play on the field will be highlighted. No greater place to get to the NFL than from Maryland. Also his Mom and friends can see him play every game. Throw in a good education and pick a location in College Park to announce and everything points to Maryland. Right? I want to think that he commits to Terps tonight but I can’t get past that he walked away from Randy at the UNC game without so much as a hand shake or head nod. What was up with that? Hope it was staged to keep everyone guessing. Add the “shock the world” and other comments together and I just don’t know. I am going to stay grounded until I know. Go Terps!!!

City council hates bars. They make it very, very hard to open one. And they’re thrilled when Thirsty Turtle (formerly Terrapin Station) get shut down. Granted, that place was a shithole, but at least it had dollar pitchers. And you could get in without an ID.

by discuit on Feb 10, 2012 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

I think those two facts are related.

The “not needing an ID to get in” and the “shutting down Thirsty Turtle” I mean.

TT was the only bar I’ve been to where I felt I needed to check the ID of the girl I was hitting on to make sure she was OVER 18.

Well, duh. But every college town needs one or more of those.

by discuit on Feb 10, 2012 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Not only do they make it hard...

…but when one of the people who approves liquor licenses in the city has ownership stakes in 2 of those bars, it’s the biggest conflict of interest ever. I loath the city of College Park. They get mad because a college IS their city. You live in COLLEGE Park! School was there first!

It's pretty good

Nice, clean sports bar, but not much room if its crowded. More of a laid back atmosphere than your typical college party bar. Definitely a solid pregame spot for basketball games due to close proximity.

CP needs 10 bars, mininum

Only one I ever went to was the Fe. At least it had a more laid back attitude, places to sit, and you could usually have a conversation (as long as it wasn’t toooo late.)

No offense to the frat/sorority Terps on here, but Cornerstone and Bentley’s just weren’t my thing. CP really needed/needs some good variety in the bar scene.

Am I the only one

That doesn’t buy that he’ll make his decision around 9? I know they have a good source on that. But there is also information about there about a football awards dinner at 7 that is honoring him, and I find it hard to believe he would miss it entirely.

https://twitter.com/#!/MikeCornejo/status/168081627354906624

And that’s nothing new. Before we knew about Looney’s we just assumed he would be making it after that dinner somewhere.

I also can’t see him up there for three hours. What could he possibly have planned? I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a lot closer to the 6 estimate that we had before, but that might just be wishful thinking.

by Jordan Ruby on Feb 10, 2012 4:23 PM EST reply actions

I'm guessing there are some wires getting crossed

That is, people are seeing the Diggs commitment at 6, then this event that’ll run till 9, and they’re guessing that they’re related. Truth be told, I don’t know that they aren’t. I’m just along for the ride. But I’d be very surprised if nothing happened until 9.

by Ben Broman on Feb 10, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Nationwide Respect for Maryland

This doesn’t relate directly to Diggs but more to recruiting and our nationwide profile. I really have a bone to pick with ESPN and there choice of games for ESPN classic. Every time Maryland plays UNC or DUKE they show an old game from 5/10/15 years back.

Every time though they pick a game where Maryland loses. This has been going a couple years now. Just something I noticed it bothers me every year I see them do it again.

Diggs attended Maryland’s season-opening win over Miami and had a phone call setup with head coach Randy Edsall for last Thursday night. Diggs likes what he sees from the first-year coach, and after attending the first game believes the program is headed in the right direction.

"He came in and made a lot of changes," Diggs said. "He’s real disciplined. He doesn’t play a lot of games. He showed it in that Miami game, and they didn’t have a couple players play, It was nice seeing them play, and Coach Edsall just executed. Danny O’Brien is a great quarterback. He has a good head, strong arm, was an all-ACC quarterback last year, so they surprised me a lot."

First time poster...

First time poster here, love the blog. Don’t want to be negative at all, but i was thinking:

So Diggs is attending for another pre-scheduled event correct? What if the only reason he is doing this at Looneys is because he already had to be there and figured he would just knock it out. Although, i tend to believe that he and the ones around him are smart enough to know if he is not committing to UMD then that’s a terrible idea. I dont know, im just worrying be prepared for the worst; we have seen this so many times before just not at a bar on the UMD campus…

For Maryland?

In terms of rankings, since Alaeze, but if you don’t count him since Jefferson in 2003 or so. In terms of hype, probably biggest ever. In terms of DC-area kids, biggest since Williams in 05.
