We NEED scorers badly

As much as I love seeing Stogs score 20+ per night and shooting 25 times a game, and I do understand its needed right now out of necessity, we are in desperate need of some shooter scorers. We have to get a few guys in that can take some of the load off 12. The whole offense right now is Stogs off a screen for 3 or Stogs getting a pick and dribbling threw his legs then jack a 3. I will say with that we are staying close in most games but its not getting us the Ws. If we can get a knock down shooter or 2 our offense will get to the next level. Tough loss 2nite. Go Terps

Shooting gets better with time and repetition

In theory Faust should get better unless Moselyinitis hits him. We don’t need a shooter if we have a dominating inside presence like we get next year with Shaq, and to a certain extent Layman

I predicted in December

Many will be botching his name, even after he graduates – MOSLEY

NFL MVP in 1982 (SB XVII) was Mark Moseley

And I mispell HIS name the same way I mispell Mosley’s – “Mosely” – all of the time. It happens.

well

none of receive 100% on our TT spelling tests – lol

I’m horrible some days – even when I’m thinking the proper spelling, I type it wrong quite often.

We need an Eric Hayes

Eric Hayes used to be our money guy…the guy would could drain the 3 and who we could reliably send to the line for an easy FT.

I hope at least one of our incoming guys can fulfill that desperate need.

We live by Stoglin...

…we die by Stoglin.

It was just killing me, seeing their biggest guy on the court 6’8" tall, and Stoglin is still throwing up off balance three’s.

What we really need is an inside game, and unfortunately, that isn’t coming for at least two years. Len and Pankey are still babies, and Padget is limited.

Next year Cleare will be a freshman, and he will certainly help, as will the maturation of Len and Pankey, but we will still be young next year. We need to just tough it out until then.

Oh, and we...

also need an elite point guard too. Love Peshon, but he isn’t it.

Pe' kills me when he pulls up for three

I don’t know why he insists on doing it every game, but it looks horrendous

by djcarv2005 on Feb 2, 2012 5:43 AM EST up reply actions

I'll agree with that

and I feel bad because I know he cares and hes trying, but its become painfully obvious that he cannot play at this level.

by HeroOfTheDay on Feb 2, 2012 9:27 AM EST up reply actions

No, he can play at this level I think, just not doing what we need him to do

We’d love the guy if he was coming off the bench for 20-25 mins a game as a backup for either guard spot. We just can’t rely on him to be a full-time point.

I don’t think he’d be a solid back up 2. Fine as a 1, but not a 2.

He'd be an okay backup at the 2

Perhaps not as a traditional 2, but Pe’ can score and is never shy to shoot. And his basketball IQ, while perhaps a bit low for a point, is great for a 2. I’d be fine giving him 10mpg or so at the 2.

by Ben Broman on Feb 2, 2012 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

We’ll have to disagree. I want a guy backing up #2 who can shoot at least 30% from three and doesn’t make ill-advised passes.

Disagree, a PG's success is driven by his teammate's ability to finish

and we don’t have finishers. We have guys with butter fingers. Based on his performance last year – he is certainly a step up from Adrian Bowie.

That said, yes his decision making could improve, but during a 2nd overtime, Spinnelli should have been REAL specific about how he wanted the plays to work (pound it inside for easy buckets….don’t give TS the ball unless its late on the shot clock….and don’t take dumb shots yerself).

by HughGR on Feb 3, 2012 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

i think that's what i love about him as well

is that he knows he isn’t playing well and he knows he has to improve. Just looking at some of the things he’s putting on twitter shows how frustrated he is and how hard he’s trying but it just isn’t translating to the court. Like for instance he says that last night was “my worst game by far this season probably worst since college haven’t been helping my teammates out they did a great job tonight”.

I guess it’s his passion for recognizing his mistakes and wanting to do better that makes me like him.

This injury must’ve really taken a toll on him because his shot and confidence seems low. Last year didn’t he have like one of the best 3 point % on the team?

I wonder how turgeon is coaching him, seeing how turgeon used to play point himself. But last night alot of mistakes and turnovers were made from him that could’ve impacted the game.

MT recruited PH to TAMU pretty hard...

…and was thrilled that he was already here when he took the job. The injury and quick return has clearly impacted PH’s game.

He does care

I’ve read his Tweets after games and esp after the Miami game. He posted twice that he had a terrible game and how he has to get better. No one knows how poorly Pe’Shon is playing more than Pe’Shon. Hopefully he’ll get it together before long.

Larkin

Ripped him on what seemed like two straight possessions in the 1st half. P’ would be a terrific back-up PG on any great team, he’s just not built to play starters minutes on any team with huge aspirations in a major conference. I also love that he bleeds MD and lets that shine thru, but as a player everyone knows what his limitations are. From a starting PG perspective, we can and will do better.

by Shellshocked on Feb 2, 2012 9:35 AM EST up reply actions

That is a negative...

The rest of the team has to be more involved than that.

by CharlesDriesell on Feb 2, 2012 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing last night...

…as I was watching Stoglin chuck up shots. That dude takes me through a gauntlet of emotions. He needs a wingman. He’s like Maverick from Top Gun. He’s clearly the best scorer on the team but then he’ll go thru a phase where he’s out of control – out of control dribbling, out of control driving, out of control shot selection – and Iceman’s quote always pops in my head “Whose side are you on?” This is even more prominent in my mind after the Greenberg quote. Then he realizes he’s out of control and disengages for a while, only to come back and he (almost) saves the day.

by Fushezzi on Feb 2, 2012 7:48 AM EST reply actions

He didn't need to shoot a 3 at the end of regulation for sure

I was disappointed when we had a chance to win and TStog jacked up a 3 at the last second. It was tied…we didn’t need a 3..he could have tried driving to the basket and tried for a floater or a dish out to someone else but I know he really wanted to be the HERO.

Oh well….he’ll learn……eventually.

Shot selection

Can be debated at another time. But if he felt like he could hit the shot, then it was a good shot. They rode his hot hand to that point, might as well stick with it. None of his shots are “good shots”, but they are good shots for him. He feels comfortable taking them. Gotta let him do what he does. I have a problem with Turgeon not working in pick and rolls with Stoglin and Len though. Even Stoglin and Parker.

by jdwall12 on Feb 3, 2012 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

Point Guard

The biggest weakness on this team is at the PG position, and it’s killing us. Put a passer like Steve Blake on this team and we’re in the top #25 now.

Alex Len is shooting over 60% from the floor on the year. He takes good shots and usually makes them. The team simply doesn’t get him the ball in good position often enough. He only averages 4 shots per game.

Stogs is an elite scorer and to be averaging so many points per game as a sophomore is impressive. I think that the last underclassman to average over 20 pts per game on the season in the ACC was Jason Williams of Duke in 2001. That’s quite a statement. No underclassman has done it in a decade.

The question is whether the team would be better off if he was more selective with his shots. If we had a better PG, I would say yes, of course. But, with Howard at the point I’m not sure. It’s difficult to say if the team is more effective with Stogs taking shots at will, or if it would be better to try to push the ball inside. Right now, passing inside leads to turnovers as often as it leads to buckets.

I really wish we had a pass first PG coming in next year. I think this team will be frustrating to watch – full of potential, but not really good – until they have the ability to run a play and make a good inside pass.

by TokyoTerp on Feb 2, 2012 8:47 AM EST reply actions

I have to admit

I dont really understand why we didnt recruit an elite PG this year. Why is one not signed to be coming in next year? At this point I would consider adding a JUCO true pg … if one exists. Or even a foreign kid. Give me the next Ricky Rubio

by Charlotte NC Terp on Feb 2, 2012 9:58 AM EST reply actions

It ain't going to happen...

…we’re just going to have to tough it out. The team had so many needs, and the staff started late…

It’s going to take two years for us to get the right players on the roster, and even then, it will be a young roster.

Children should be seen and not heard.

by CharlesDriesell on Feb 2, 2012 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

Bingo

The fact that the staff got a late start on recruiting is the reason that we weren’t able to recruit an elite PG. The few elite PGs in this class had already been recruited for years by other programs that had coaching staffs in place. It will definitely take another year or two before we will have the opportunity to land a big-time PG.

In the meantime, I hope Cassell Jr commits to us. Like the OP said, we need scorers badly, and this kid has proved that he can fill it up while playing against good competition. I don’t care if he’s a combo and plays the same position as Seth. I just want some guys that can put the ball in the basket.

by RealtorTerp on Feb 3, 2012 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

a true PG

is easily the #1 need on this team

by bloodwatermission on Feb 2, 2012 10:26 AM EST reply actions

We need defenders

We gave up 90 points and we were still close to winning. Our offense was OK last night, we scored 86 and 53 points were from players not named Stoglin. Scott burned us last night (along with a few others) and we need to defend better than we did.

by torope on Feb 2, 2012 12:53 PM EST reply actions

we need offensive variety...

a player or players who consistently get the ball and are told to score in places that suit them. the guards don’t get it inside enough. last night was telling. deep 3 after deep 3 after deep 3 after… 28 3’s? who else was involved in that 2nd overtime. no one else on the current roster except stoglin and mosely started last year. so force the development of another scorer. padgett? pankey? Len?
guys with the skill to won’t have a chance to do so, nor live up to it or develop the ability too.

by space_ on Feb 2, 2012 3:32 PM EST reply actions

I liked the way Faust and Parker handled the ball last night

Let them bring it down the court when "pe is resting. Gotta try something new!!

by Snappin Terp on Feb 2, 2012 3:58 PM EST reply actions

Don't mind Faust bring it up

But I definitely don’t trust Parker. I love that he is putting forth a great deal of effort, and I believe he will turn out to be a nice player, but at this point, I don’t trust his handle enough to say that he should be bringing the ball up.

by RealtorTerp on Feb 3, 2012 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

What we needed last night

Was to be able to run a play in the final seconds of regulation that didn’t end up in a contested 3 point attempt. I mean really, they took a time out and I am quite sure they planned something other than dribbling the ball for 20 seconds and then passing to Stoglin. Lack of execution really kills this squad.

Personaly I was hoping

that we’d run the play that Turge drew up for ESPN at the beginning of the year just to rub it in their faces. Too much time on the clock I guess…

by chitsweire on Feb 2, 2012 10:41 PM EST up reply actions

i wondered about that...

there’s no way the top acc coaches would give up their bread-and-butter game winning play would they? always wondered if those coaches were serious or if that was a fluff play in the back of the playbook.

by space_ on Feb 3, 2012 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

Unfortunately Turg was in the locker room when the last play of regulation was going on

I wonder if he could have tweeted to someone on the bench to run a play? LOL
I guess that would have been “Illegal” but still…if it were me, I’d try anything to get my plays into the game esp. at crunch time.

I would have preferred TStog penetrating and tossing a floater or dishing out on that game winning try.

Pe’Shon had a chance in the 1st OT but he couldn’t even get the ball close to the basket.
