Maryland Terrapins @ Miami Hurricanes: The GameThread

Maryland Terrapins at Miami Hurricanes, Feb 1, 2012 8:00 PM EST

Who's up for a conceivable upset road win? I know I am. Game tips at 8:00 on ACC Network, so check your local listings. If it isn't on in your area, you'll be able to watch on ESPN3 (blackout) and TheACC.com. That should cover everyone.

Today kinda sucked on the football side. So we turn our hopes and dreams to the roundball. A loss would make today ... well, even more awful. Save us, basketball.

Random, Baseless Prediction: Pe'Shon Howard has his breakout game. At least 15 points, 5 assists, no more than 3 turnovers. Just because.

Prediction: In my heart of hearts, I don't think Maryland will win this one. But I can't bear to predict a loss. Not today. The streak breaks, somewhat unexpectedly, thanks to a surprisingly good performance from Alex Len and superior guard play.

And a guessing game, because we haven't had one in some time: let's look at James Padgett, who's been a bit underrated lately. Points plus offensive rebounds, please, with minutes played as the tiebreaker.

hopefully he comes up big and we can have solid rotation down low to get their guys in foul trouble

I'm tired

of losing to Miami so much. It’s starting to get really annoying now.

nahhh.....

a little too wahoo for me. Suits at a game. I get the sentiment, but would hate to see the students make a habit of it en masse.

I dunno, I see it getting annoying like the hogettes.

I'll say

Len bounces back with 10 pts and 8 boards. Mosley has a career game tonight because of Miami’s defensive match-ups. Spideyguy0 mentioned a match-up Laranaga might use to shut down Stogs by putting Scott on him. That would put 6’1" Grant on Mosley and I see Mosley having a high school flashback and bullying Grant in the first half for about 12 points, forcing Laranaga to put Scott back on Mosley after halftime and then Stogs takes over in the 2nd half. Final score will be 71-65 Terps.

by terpsallday on Feb 1, 2012 5:15 PM EST reply actions

Mosley ends up with 24 pts. tonight

He’ll hit some timely jumpers and a 3 in the corner late in the 2nd half. He wins it for us from the charity stripe.

I'm worried that Miami's bigs will do to us what Florida State did

Reggie Johnson is a mammoth under the basket at 6-10 and 285 with Kenny Kadji at 6-11 and 250. I hope Len has the kind of game he had at NC State. It would be nice if Pankey and Padgett also held their own down low. Their NYC backcourt isn’t too shabby either so tonight isn’t going to be easy by any means. This would be a really good road win for us.

by cdmterp on Feb 1, 2012 5:22 PM EST reply actions

Johnson's trying to get his legs back

Hopefully, we get him in foul trouble early (Alex and killer P’s, anyone?) – he’s had 4 fouls in 4 out of 6 ACC games.

Predictions for bigs tonight

Len 10 and 7, Pankey 6 and 6 and Padgett 11 and 5. Hope it’s enough. My prediction is MD 73, Miami 67.

Padge: 10 pts + 4 off reb = 14; 25 min played

It would be cool to acknowledge the winner of the guessing game in a post-game thread. It could also be a royal pain to determine who actually won, lol. However, one way to do this might be to make a “seed” comment with the format for the guessing game entry in the title. Then in order to be an official entrant, you have to copy the exact format, make your changes to the numbers, and have it posted in the game thread by a certain time (e.g. five minutes before scheduled tip). Just a suggestion…

I am

actually more nervous for this game than I was the duke game. We got to get a road win going home to UNC. We need confidence so bad. I think every game not UNC and Duke is a must win.

Not sure why Miami is favored by double digits, not seeing it

This game is seven points either way; I take MD 69, MIA 64, though I would not be surprised if we lost, it’s not like Miami is a bad team.

I am looking for a good game at the point by Pe'Shon

He played the last 10 minutes of the VT game very well. He played smart. He looked liked he is getting it. Even when we beat their press, he didn’t put his head down and try to take to it the rim. He pulled up, kept his dribble, allowed the others to get into position, and got the offense going. The only fault I found with his play was his inbounds passes to Nick while we were trying to protect the lead. Nick is not the guy we want shooting one-and-ones late in a game.

As to Alex, the big question is whether he can play aggressively against their big men without getting into foul trouble.

XM Radio

Until this year the entire ACC schedule was carried on XM Radio, now it’s seems about only half of the teams – Maryland not included – broadcast their home game feeds. Road games at Duke and Carolina for example are scheduled for broadcast (the home team radio feed). Tonight’s game is not, nor are any of Maryland’s remaining home games.

Something obviously changed in the relationship between XM and the conference, as well as the individual teams, and I’d be interested to find out what changed and why.

The ACC coverage was one of the primary reasons I’ve maintained my subscription over the years, and along with their skyrocketing rates XM is now squarely on the chopping block.

Even though it's very unlikely the Terps make NCAA tourney this year

I’d love for them to finally beat Miami on the road. It’s really pretty pathetic how bad they’ve been against UM, VT, and BC collectively since they all joined the league.

The ’06 (or maybe it was ’07) game the Terps blew a 17-point lead at Miami was one of the most infuriating games of recent vintage.

Yikes

wouldnt be surprised if we get blown out

by mrwhitey on Feb 1, 2012 8:50 PM EST reply actions

I don't buy that.

We get the 2nd most foul calls in the country. Now, you could argue that we’re still not getting calls we deserve – that’s fair. But that would mean we’re so much better than every other team in the country that we deserve to be far and away the most-fouled team in the country. Hmmm … probably not.

Have there been a few bad calls that went against us throughout the course of the season? Sure. The opposite has happened as well. But there wasn’t anything like the WVU-Syracuse goaltending call that really changed the course of the game. Truth is, if we were playing defense, hitting shots, and not turning the ball over, no one is saying a thing about the refs.

by Ben Broman on Feb 1, 2012 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

My biggest problem

is the inconsistency between officiating crews. Some let them play, others call somewhat nothing fouls. I’m still ticked about the call on Mosley at the Tech game. Worst. Call. Ever.

But overall, you’re right. I know I overreact, especially when I’m watching as a fan and not as a writer.

by Dave Tucker on Feb 1, 2012 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not saying the officiating is causing us to lose

but it’s definitely be ONE of the obstacles in our way this year.

by 1 proud terp on Feb 1, 2012 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

But it’s not in our control. Free throw shooting? That is. Defensive rotation? That is. Can’t do a thing about officials.

didnt wait

Until the second half for our collapse. No progress anymore between games. We know exactly what will happen. Terps will get to the line, but miss a bunch of them. Stoglin will put up a bunch of dumb shots. Pe will turn it over a bunch. Padge will get stuffed. Pankey will get lost on defense. Basically if stoglins bad shots aren’t falling, terps will lose.

by SeattleTerp on Feb 1, 2012 8:55 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Mosley needs to LEAD this team in the 2nd half

Ok Mr. Senior…step up and direct this team and make up this deficit. Stogs needs to play smarter and our bigs need to make shots. Simple enough right?

There's still a whole second half and if Stoglin starts shooting well we'll be right back in this

I don't know, I've largely glorified his past.

Because he was awesome. And c’mon, he was a JuCo transfer with like no other offers. He exceeded everything we ever thought he’d be. Don’t think the same can be said for Padge – though he’s doing well, all things considered.

by Ben Broman on Feb 1, 2012 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

by spivy on Feb 1, 2012 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

Stogs is killing us

only player playing with any guts is parker. And len is having a decent half

by terpskin on Feb 1, 2012 8:58 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

And to say Len is having a good half is to ignore the very, very rough start he had. At least there is a chance that he just needed some time to shake the nerves and start playing better or it could just be that he started to look better when Reggie Johnson left the game with 2 fouls.

by tERP01 on Feb 1, 2012 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

Pe

has been shit, minus the 2 lobs to Parker.

by spivy on Feb 1, 2012 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

He might fix this in the 2nd half, but doubtful.

by tERP01 on Feb 1, 2012 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

i don't think Pe' has been that bad. Yall are way too hard on him.

the second he does something bad, yall say he sucks and shit, but even though last game he had NO turnovers, he gets no props.

by terp10 on Feb 1, 2012 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

He's not always bad

but tonight is rough to watch, at least on O.

He’s not shooting and he’s not creating for himself or for others. Now some of this should be credited to Miami. they are managing to simultaneously stop our penetration AND not give us quality outside looks.

by tERP01 on Feb 1, 2012 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

Ugh.

I know expectations were low this season, but that was the most difficult half (especially for a 1st half of a game) to watch in a while now. We just look completely lost and in a way that is HIGHLY unlikely to turn around in the 2nd half. Game was close for a while, but mostly because Miami was shooting horribly, not because they were taking bad shots or because our D was pressuring them.

On the other side of the ball, Miami is playing great D against us while we execute pretty horribly on O.

Hate to say it, but 2nd half could be even uglier. So hope I am wrong…. I’m not usually a doomsayer, but something is off even more than usual tonight.

by tERP01 on Feb 1, 2012 8:59 PM EST reply actions

Memo to writers of Testudo Times.

Please show some intelligence and basketball knowledge by not mentioning Maryland and postseason play in the same sentence for the rest of the year.

Next year things can only get better. Hang in there fellas! Thanks for covering Maryland athletics better than anybody.

by bruterp on Feb 1, 2012 9:02 PM EST reply actions

Miami ended half on 10-0 run so maybe we got that out of our system

Plus we shot under 30% in the first half and I think we’ll shoot better in the 2nd half. We can come back and win this game.

by cdmterp on Feb 1, 2012 9:03 PM EST reply actions

We can

Truth be told, we actually do.

We won the first half with the exception of about five minutes. It’s a 20 minute half, of course, but it’s not like we were utterly outclassed by them up and down the floor for 20 minutes.

Notable stats,

Stogs 25 pts, Len 11 and 7, Nick 9 pts, 4 boards, 3 steals. And we’re shooting 75% from the line.

I'm stunned

honestly stunned we lost this game after Grant fouled out

by spivy on Feb 1, 2012 10:41 PM EST reply actions

This is just painful

To keep fighting in OT, to have their players all foul out, only to lose it? On stupid calls and stupid play? This one just hurts.

by NAmstrong on Feb 1, 2012 10:42 PM EST reply actions

Yea

At least we can put a rest to the ncaat talk. I’m glad to get this loss over with instead of losing a bad game to a team like BC

by Verycooldude9 on Feb 1, 2012 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

We haven't won one of these games in forever

Anyone remember the last comeback in epic fashion? Gilchrist et al against Puke in ACC Championship?

"not gonna lie"

Kind of superfluous there….You guys have a reputation at Duke, you know.

by db0255 on Feb 1, 2012 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

PAINFUL

This referee crew was embarrassing. The ref is looking right at the Miami player as he goaltended and no call. What a loss…

by ams1986 on Feb 1, 2012 10:43 PM EST reply actions

Yep

We could have done things to win the game in spite of the poor refereeing, but some of the calls they made (or didn’t make) were just outright pathetic.

by aholla30 on Feb 1, 2012 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

Meh

UMD showed at the end of the 2nd half that a good team shouldn’t give a shit about the refs and that they can overcome bad calls. We saw a glimpse of it. Hopefully in 2 years we’ll be consistently good enough to overcome

by spivy on Feb 1, 2012 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

Shouldn't have mattered

Their two best players fouled out and we still couldn’t win. Good teams…….scratch that competent teams win this game. I agree the comeback was great, but once we got to OT we shit the bed.

by marylandfan145 on Feb 1, 2012 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

of course you're right

but it still sucks when it was so obvious and those 2 points mattered.

GG guys

Great effort. Should’ve been ours.

by Nihonterp on Feb 1, 2012 10:44 PM EST reply actions

Hey, Ben... request:

Can you keep an eye on this officiating crew and see if they ref their next game without anything done by the ACC?

by Tezcatlipoca on Feb 1, 2012 10:45 PM EST reply actions

This crew won't referee together for the next game

They will probably work tomorrow night at different locations

by cdmterp on Feb 1, 2012 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, I don't know how NCAA crews work.

I just assumed they staid as a group like MLB umpires.

by Tezcatlipoca on Feb 1, 2012 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

I'll keep an eye out.

My only two problems: the technicals (clearly lost control of the game) and the goaltend.

by Ben Broman on Feb 1, 2012 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

Young team showed a lot of heart with the comeback effort

Building for the future.

Unlike Edsall, the players definitely have Turge’s back.

by bruterp on Feb 1, 2012 10:45 PM EST reply actions

Well

It’s a shame that loss goes to Turgeon when it should have been a win for Spinelli.

by RedTurtle on Feb 1, 2012 10:45 PM EST reply actions

STOGS FOR PREZ

even with the loss, this team is NOTHING without Stogs. Remember that the next time he chucks up something ridiculous. KEEP CHUCKING STOGS!

by spivy on Feb 1, 2012 10:46 PM EST reply actions

The future is good

But it would be nice if we won some of these games.

by MacSKY on Feb 1, 2012 10:46 PM EST reply actions

In the end, we lost this on our own

Miami’s two best players were out for last 10-15 minutes and we couldn’t pull it off. I’m proud of the comeback and I hate the goal tend call, but if we really played like we should against such a depleted team, we would have won.

by Verycooldude9 on Feb 1, 2012 10:48 PM EST reply actions

We had basically the last shot at the end of reg and 1OT

by discuit on Feb 1, 2012 10:50 PM EST up reply actions

Stop with the whinning about the no call on the goaltending.

I understand the call was terrible, but there was no excuse not to win this game in OT after most of their top players fouled out. Not trying to be a downer, but we missed a heck of an opportunity to get a big road W tonight. This team needs to learn how to win because when it counted they had a younger team on the floor and still won it so youth is no excuse

by marylandfan145 on Feb 1, 2012 10:49 PM EST reply actions

No.

Stop it with the normative crap. Should we have won? Yes. Should we be an NCAA tournament team? Well, that would be nice. You know what, while we’re at it, let’s go undefeated. That’d be swell!

Doesn’t matter what should’ve happened. Matters what did. And what did was they missed a goaltending call.

by Ben Broman on Feb 1, 2012 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

ive had enough of moral victories the past 2 years. I really dont get how we didnt win, there 3 leading scorers were fouled out?

btw, if that guy doesnt make that 3 pointer from south of the equator in the 1st overtime, we win by 5-7 points

by newjetfan on Feb 1, 2012 10:49 PM EST reply actions

Honestly think the calls

spiralled out of control for the refs. It’s as if their heads were spinning and they knew they weren’t on their game….absolutely horrid.

by db0255 on Feb 1, 2012 10:49 PM EST reply actions

Brian Dorsey (Bald ref) has a quick whistle and an ego.

He called all four Technicals, but three of them were warranted.

by bruterp on Feb 1, 2012 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Not just that though

It was as if the officiating in general hit a snag. You ever get those times where you’re not in your game, and it like…continues for a while, but you KNOW you’re not on your game and you still do it anyway? That was what this was like…reptilian brain syndrome

by db0255 on Feb 1, 2012 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

Three of the four technicals were legit

I would not have called the second technical on Turgeon. Both T’s against Miami were warranted.

Don’t blame the refs. We had were given ample opportunities to win this game

by bruterp on Feb 1, 2012 10:50 PM EST reply actions

Completely agree

As evidenced by the fact half of their team fouled out lol

by marylandfan145 on Feb 1, 2012 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

I will say that Coach K gets away with murder in terms of what he is allowed to say to refs

Turge is the new kid on the block and will have to pay his dues. It sucks, but it is the way things tend to work.

by bruterp on Feb 1, 2012 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

This.

He doesn’t kowtow to the elite coaches of the ACC…and probably the refs go along with too.

LOVE IT.

Re: officiating

WE lost this game, not the officials. Enough said

by spivy on Feb 1, 2012 10:50 PM EST reply actions

Correct

we should have easily had this game in the bag, but let them stay in it. Better to lose this year than next.

by Snappin Terp on Feb 1, 2012 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

What our game plan should've been the rest of the game after Jackson got his 5th

1. Look inside to Len/Padge
2. If they’re not open, drive and look for someone
3. If the pass isn’t there, go to the hoop and look to make contact

Instead, we got 15+ 3 attempts from Stogs… can’t imagine Turge would approve.

by Nihonterp on Feb 1, 2012 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

bummer

needed to push it inside with their bigs out. How come Parker and Berend got little PT in 2nd half after solid 1st halves?

by REDMAN on Feb 1, 2012 10:51 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

As a long time terp fan

the good wins outnumber the bad losses. We let Miami win this game. They didn’t deserve it, but we lost it ourselves. Bottom line is that our players have to play smarter, and we didn’t tonight.

by Snappin Terp on Feb 1, 2012 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

I don't underandt why Weiss wasn't in instead of Padge.

No offense to Padge, but he’s only 6’7’’ or so. Weiss is a legit 6’10’’ The guy covering Padge was 6’6’’. Weiss would have eaten that 6’6’’ guy alive and would have helped on the boards.

by oriolekid on Feb 1, 2012 10:51 PM EST reply actions

I'm with you

But I would have looked to Padge/Len in the 3rd OT. As you can see from my previous posts that I’m the biggest Stogs fanboy alive, but we should have been looking to exploit them on the block late in the game. I just don’t get it. Stogs was going insane, but we needed to slow down those possessions and look to the interior

by spivy on Feb 1, 2012 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

I thought Len and Weijs played well together in the first half

I like that combination. Especially with their size against a smaller front line for Miami, save fatso Reggie Johnson

by cdmterp on Feb 1, 2012 10:53 PM EST reply actions

Game over, positives people

16 down, on the road. Really. Wished we’d won, but one hell of a game. They are getting it. I’m loving the future.

by madterp on Feb 1, 2012 10:55 PM EST reply actions

Yes

Games like this definitely build character. They won’t go home with a win, but I definitely think we grew up a little right there.

And man, it’s so enjoyable watching a season without expectations! If we lost this any other year I’d be totally pissed, but even with the loss I find myself sitting here grinning thinking of the future. Bright days ahead!

by Nihonterp on Feb 1, 2012 10:58 PM EST up reply actions

we should've won going away

that call wasn’t huge. wasn’t all that obvious either, the way that ball stayed on the rim. we had a huge advantage with the foul outs and settled for stoglin chucking 3’s on way too many possessions.

by Sephtical on Feb 1, 2012 10:56 PM EST via Android app reply actions

The Terps have played too many games like this

And we lose almost all of them. This team is in a learning process, and this is a tough one to take.

by Snappin Terp on Feb 1, 2012 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

I hope Turge

destroys that ref. I just don’t understand how you can make that call there

by spivy on Feb 1, 2012 10:57 PM EST reply actions

Calling the double technical on Turgeon was spineless.

by ams1986 on Feb 1, 2012 10:58 PM EST up reply actions

Turge was giving him some major shit

But the 2nd T is ridiculous. Not to mention that the initial call was HORRENDOUS. God, I can’t wait to see Shaq and Layman next year

by spivy on Feb 1, 2012 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

This team is not good, I still love em, but reality is reality.

Mistakes galore, signs of a young team. How Len couldn’t dominate in overtime scares me. I don’t know how you can teach a 7 footer to win a rebound against a 6 footer, should come natural you’d think. Glad to see Turge finally made a stand with that Tech, been waiting on that for the last few games.
