Maryland Terrapins @ Miami Hurricanes: The GameThread
Maryland Terrapins at Miami Hurricanes, Feb 1, 2012 8:00 PM EST
Who's up for a conceivable upset road win? I know I am. Game tips at 8:00 on ACC Network, so check your local listings. If it isn't on in your area, you'll be able to watch on ESPN3 (blackout) and TheACC.com. That should cover everyone.
Today kinda sucked on the football side. So we turn our hopes and dreams to the roundball. A loss would make today ... well, even more awful. Save us, basketball.
Random, Baseless Prediction: Pe'Shon Howard has his breakout game. At least 15 points, 5 assists, no more than 3 turnovers. Just because.
Prediction: In my heart of hearts, I don't think Maryland will win this one. But I can't bear to predict a loss. Not today. The streak breaks, somewhat unexpectedly, thanks to a surprisingly good performance from Alex Len and superior guard play.
And a guessing game, because we haven't had one in some time: let's look at James Padgett, who's been a bit underrated lately. Points plus offensive rebounds, please, with minutes played as the tiebreaker.

according to turge
len had his best practice at umd this week
hopefully he comes up big and we can have solid rotation down low to get their guys in foul trouble
Snowballing
Hope it doesn’t go from bad to worse. We need this win!

Yes it was
I actually know one of those people.
I think it would be great...
if the entire student section were to dress up like Turgeon for 1 game.
nahhh.....
a little too wahoo for me. Suits at a game. I get the sentiment, but would hate to see the students make a habit of it en masse.
I dunno, I see it getting annoying like the hogettes.

I'll say
Len bounces back with 10 pts and 8 boards. Mosley has a career game tonight because of Miami’s defensive match-ups. Spideyguy0 mentioned a match-up Laranaga might use to shut down Stogs by putting Scott on him. That would put 6’1" Grant on Mosley and I see Mosley having a high school flashback and bullying Grant in the first half for about 12 points, forcing Laranaga to put Scott back on Mosley after halftime and then Stogs takes over in the 2nd half. Final score will be 71-65 Terps.
Mosley ends up with 24 pts. tonight
He’ll hit some timely jumpers and a 3 in the corner late in the 2nd half. He wins it for us from the charity stripe.

8 pts, 8 boards , 25 minutes

Big game for this team
I hope to see the bigs take Reggie out of his comfort level and neutralize his experience.
JP: 5 points, 3 ORs, 24 minutes
I'm worried that Miami's bigs will do to us what Florida State did
Reggie Johnson is a mammoth under the basket at 6-10 and 285 with Kenny Kadji at 6-11 and 250. I hope Len has the kind of game he had at NC State. It would be nice if Pankey and Padgett also held their own down low. Their NYC backcourt isn’t too shabby either so tonight isn’t going to be easy by any means. This would be a really good road win for us.
Johnson's trying to get his legs back
Hopefully, we get him in foul trouble early (Alex and killer P’s, anyone?) – he’s had 4 fouls in 4 out of 6 ACC games.
"A new era has dawned in Maryland Athletics..."
Predictions for bigs tonight
Len 10 and 7, Pankey 6 and 6 and Padgett 11 and 5. Hope it’s enough. My prediction is MD 73, Miami 67.
I see a win here. I can't believe we r predicted to lose this game by double-digits!
Padge goes 8 and 7, pankey 6 and 6, and Len goes for 3 and 7
UCLA who?
Padge: 10 pts + 4 off reb = 14; 25 min played
It would be cool to acknowledge the winner of the guessing game in a post-game thread. It could also be a royal pain to determine who actually won, lol. However, one way to do this might be to make a “seed” comment with the format for the guessing game entry in the title. Then in order to be an official entrant, you have to copy the exact format, make your changes to the numbers, and have it posted in the game thread by a certain time (e.g. five minutes before scheduled tip). Just a suggestion…

I am
actually more nervous for this game than I was the duke game. We got to get a road win going home to UNC. We need confidence so bad. I think every game not UNC and Duke is a must win.
Not sure why Miami is favored by double digits, not seeing it
This game is seven points either way; I take MD 69, MIA 64, though I would not be surprised if we lost, it’s not like Miami is a bad team.
Whose job am I supposed to call for now?
16
13 Points 3 ORs
Got a good feeling about tonight. Not sure why, but it is always darkest before the dawn right? I do think this one be close late, but I think maybe we see some improvement.
The problem with Miami is just like with FSU.
They are just too athletic, but we might be able to keep up with them, though at Miami will be hard.
Fear the Turgle!
Bench Points will play big in this one
between Pankey, Padge, and Len they need 25 points…….and Terps need to make their F/T
46
27 points 19 offensive rebounds 49 minutes
106-63 win
The parameters make sense if you don’t think about it.
I am looking for a good game at the point by Pe'Shon
He played the last 10 minutes of the VT game very well. He played smart. He looked liked he is getting it. Even when we beat their press, he didn’t put his head down and try to take to it the rim. He pulled up, kept his dribble, allowed the others to get into position, and got the offense going. The only fault I found with his play was his inbounds passes to Nick while we were trying to protect the lead. Nick is not the guy we want shooting one-and-ones late in a game.
As to Alex, the big question is whether he can play aggressively against their big men without getting into foul trouble.
Pound the paint...
like they did in the first half against Duke. Get Miami’s bigs in foul trouble and save Len for the second half.
Also Faust has a near triple double
13 points 10 rebounds 7 assists 4 steals
Thanks. I’m in the CP area and I was thinking 6 / 506 as well but the guide doesn’t have it listed as coming on that channel at 8, hopefully its wrong.
Yea it's not in the guide for me either
Hopefully it’s on at 8 on some channel

So kadji is out?
This is much more important than it seems. Kadji is 6-11 and can shoot 3’s, I don’t think any of our big men could’ve stopped him. Hopefully this is the break we need to win the game.

Prediction
Len hits his first 3 of the season tonight
he shouldn't be allowed to attempt 3s
until he develops a post game
unless we are totally misevaluating what he is
maybe we all just assumed he would be a post player bc of his size when he is in fact a just shooter who is uncoverable bc 7-1 guys dont play further than 5 feet from the basket. He could be a whole new type of player that we unearthed from the forrests of Ukraine (they have those right?)
also im kinda high
XM Radio
Until this year the entire ACC schedule was carried on XM Radio, now it’s seems about only half of the teams – Maryland not included – broadcast their home game feeds. Road games at Duke and Carolina for example are scheduled for broadcast (the home team radio feed). Tonight’s game is not, nor are any of Maryland’s remaining home games.
Something obviously changed in the relationship between XM and the conference, as well as the individual teams, and I’d be interested to find out what changed and why.
The ACC coverage was one of the primary reasons I’ve maintained my subscription over the years, and along with their skyrocketing rates XM is now squarely on the chopping block.
So wait...
Faust isn’t back at point, right? So that means Stogs is our starting PG?
Maybe Turg wants him to pass more at least to start...
….then explode for points in the 2nd half like he seems to do anyway.

Well, this is just great.
I live in Rockville, which theoretically is within the University of Maryland realm, yet the best I can do for watching the game is pixelated crap on TheACC.com.
This may be a “first-world problem”, but it still really pisses me the fuck off.
Not on in S.C.
They’re showing N.C. State on one channel and Georgia on another.
Yeah, now that I get to see them play, my bitching and moaning will probably increase.
On the other hand, we don’t have the officials and Duke on the floor, so my bitching and moaning may decrease.
Hell, I have no idea what the deuce is going to happen anymore.
Is that 2 on Faust in under 10 seconds?

he is freakin’ MASSIVE. Padge just bounced off of him
is there anyone else inside who can actually back up reggie johnson
by proudterp on Feb 1, 2012 8:14 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Nope.
They literally have no post depth past him and Kadji. They might have like a 6-9 walkon, I think he got a minute of PT against BC. but no real depth.
And Reg can only go like 25, maybe 30 minutes.
lets get reggie in foul trouble then

No
There was a few minutes a few games where he was truly the flying dutchman
Len playing well
That first foul was bull shit I watched the replay… he jumped straight up, no way it was over the back.
I know this is cliche as hell...
but they really need to change the name of that rule and the way it is called. Len is always going to go over people’s backs… because he’s 7’1". It’s only a foul if there’s significant contact.
The Europeans showed up to play today
I think Len’ll be ok today.

Even though it's very unlikely the Terps make NCAA tourney this year
I’d love for them to finally beat Miami on the road. It’s really pretty pathetic how bad they’ve been against UM, VT, and BC collectively since they all joined the league.
The ’06 (or maybe it was ’07) game the Terps blew a 17-point lead at Miami was one of the most infuriating games of recent vintage.
by Jason Middlekauff on Feb 1, 2012 8:28 PM EST reply actions
He is really stroking it well today.
Gotta love CBB announcers.
It is so obvious when Stoglin is going to shoot
I don’t know how teams haven’t scouted this yet but he always gives a look right before he is going to take a pull up jumper. No chance of a pass
Not sure he's got the floor general gene, though.
Pe’ has shown that he can be a floor general, just really rarely.
Eh, sort of.
I like him as a secondary option for his passing ability, which is Greivis-esque at times, but he has a lot of faults as a primary point. That isn’t to say he can’t get better, only that right now he can’t do what we want him to.
I'lll give that fat guy that shot all game
Although it was a good looking shot…nice spin
That was a sweet dish by Parker.
Len’s hands = granite
When will we ever stop being sloppy????

He's so inconsistent, but I would be okay with it.
He definitely looks a bit more confident now. That dime to Pankey was great.
My biggest problem with our defense...
…is when we let a guy get by us in the post and then foul them on an easy layup. That and when we don’t double-down on defense in the post, but we’ve actually been doing that tonight.

There are a dozen reasons we're losing that have nothing to do with the referees.
We, as a fanbase, need to get over that a bit.
Refs have been bad against us though, all season.
I think they are initiating Turge to the new lig
I don't buy that.
We get the 2nd most foul calls in the country. Now, you could argue that we’re still not getting calls we deserve – that’s fair. But that would mean we’re so much better than every other team in the country that we deserve to be far and away the most-fouled team in the country. Hmmm … probably not.
Have there been a few bad calls that went against us throughout the course of the season? Sure. The opposite has happened as well. But there wasn’t anything like the WVU-Syracuse goaltending call that really changed the course of the game. Truth is, if we were playing defense, hitting shots, and not turning the ball over, no one is saying a thing about the refs.
My biggest problem
is the inconsistency between officiating crews. Some let them play, others call somewhat nothing fouls. I’m still ticked about the call on Mosley at the Tech game. Worst. Call. Ever.
But overall, you’re right. I know I overreact, especially when I’m watching as a fan and not as a writer.
I'm not saying the officiating is causing us to lose
but it’s definitely be ONE of the obstacles in our way this year.
Well, sure.
But it’s not in our control. Free throw shooting? That is. Defensive rotation? That is. Can’t do a thing about officials.
I said good bye to the season
After JW and GW both left back to back
we take it to the hole so F-ing soft everytime
can’t wait for cleare to come in and play smashmouth inside.
This is pathetic
I want a lineup of Parker, Weijs, and 3 walkons to start the second half. Send a damn message, Turge.
Gary wouldn't tolerate this effort
He would have walk-ons in the game
I never remember a Gary team play like this
They always had guys playing with heart. ALWAYS. Even when they were down by 20
Turgeon wouldn't either
He talked in his press conference after the Va Tech game about the multiple times he pulled Stoglin for shooting the ball way to early in the shot clock. He’d definitely pull players if he didn’t think they were giving effort.
It's 11am here
But I’m with you. I can take losing, but the effort is depressing.
We'll see what Turge is made of tonight.
He needs to be ripping some new assholes in the locker room right now. “Looking like a team, boys” my ass!!!

Until the second half for our collapse. No progress anymore between games. We know exactly what will happen. Terps will get to the line, but miss a bunch of them. Stoglin will put up a bunch of dumb shots. Pe will turn it over a bunch. Padge will get stuffed. Pankey will get lost on defense. Basically if stoglins bad shots aren’t falling, terps will lose.

There's still a whole second half and if Stoglin starts shooting well we'll be right back in this
Hopefully this is the only huge run the other team makes….fortunately it’s not too late to do anything about it like it has been before
Stoglin needs to start playing without the ball
to get his shots. Mosely…… damnit man…. this is like last year bowie dissapearing, tucker sucking,… We need sterling ledbetter back
bambale osby and james padgett
would be the most frustrating front court i could think of
how many times would he snatch an o rebound
and then miss the putback?
I don't know, I've largely glorified his past.
Because he was awesome. And c’mon, he was a JuCo transfer with like no other offers. He exceeded everything we ever thought he’d be. Don’t think the same can be said for Padge – though he’s doing well, all things considered.
Agreed
And to say Len is having a good half is to ignore the very, very rough start he had. At least there is a chance that he just needed some time to shake the nerves and start playing better or it could just be that he started to look better when Reggie Johnson left the game with 2 fouls.
yep. unfortunately.
He might fix this in the 2nd half, but doubtful.
i don't think Pe' has been that bad. Yall are way too hard on him.
the second he does something bad, yall say he sucks and shit, but even though last game he had NO turnovers, he gets no props.
He's definitely having an off night, but so is most of the team.
Everyone not named Parker.
He's not always bad
but tonight is rough to watch, at least on O.
He’s not shooting and he’s not creating for himself or for others. Now some of this should be credited to Miami. they are managing to simultaneously stop our penetration AND not give us quality outside looks.
Ugh.
I know expectations were low this season, but that was the most difficult half (especially for a 1st half of a game) to watch in a while now. We just look completely lost and in a way that is HIGHLY unlikely to turn around in the 2nd half. Game was close for a while, but mostly because Miami was shooting horribly, not because they were taking bad shots or because our D was pressuring them.
On the other side of the ball, Miami is playing great D against us while we execute pretty horribly on O.
Hate to say it, but 2nd half could be even uglier. So hope I am wrong…. I’m not usually a doomsayer, but something is off even more than usual tonight.
Memo to writers of Testudo Times.
Please show some intelligence and basketball knowledge by not mentioning Maryland and postseason play in the same sentence for the rest of the year.
Next year things can only get better. Hang in there fellas! Thanks for covering Maryland athletics better than anybody.
Miami ended half on 10-0 run so maybe we got that out of our system
Plus we shot under 30% in the first half and I think we’ll shoot better in the 2nd half. We can come back and win this game.
love the optimism
But I don’t think anyone on the team other than Stoglin and Mosley shoots over 30 % from 3.

I'll always remember
when they beat UNC and he had that late offensive board, scored some ridiculous shot from 1 foot away, and promptly landed directly on his back
I'm don't know why everybody's so pessimistic
I think we’ve got a great chance for the second half. Of course that’s probably just the crack talking…
We'd have a great chance
if it was a 3-5 pt game or something within reason for how the half went. down 11 i don’t know
Truth be told, we actually do.
We won the first half with the exception of about five minutes. It’s a 20 minute half, of course, but it’s not like we were utterly outclassed by them up and down the floor for 20 minutes.
Did Stogs sneak out last night and fuck one of the Kardashians??
Where’s his damn head at????
I like that by Faust
had an open 3, but knew he needs to drive it. Good decision.
Faust shoots 55 percent from the line?!?!
Christ that’s unacceptable

I still think he had a horrible start to this game, but this is a MUCH more enjoyable Len to watch. Johnson was killing him earlier, but seems like he’s learning how to adjust nicely.

Plenty of time here, but we're not going to make a run.
Our defense is getting better but we still don’t have the offense. Just going to have to out-execute them the final nine minutes. Focus and keep making good plays. Things will turn out eventually.

This is an example where poor shot selection by Stoglin REALLY hurt us and Pe should have been sat down midway through the first half, poor D and terrible turnovers. We still can’t close out on 3 point shooters quick enough either

Shooting free throws for us is the dominant strategy right now
so long as we have someone like Mosley at the line. Scoring without the clock running = good

STOGS FOR PREZ
even with the loss, this team is NOTHING without Stogs. Remember that the next time he chucks up something ridiculous. KEEP CHUCKING STOGS!
The future is good
But it would be nice if we won some of these games.
In the end, we lost this on our own
Miami’s two best players were out for last 10-15 minutes and we couldn’t pull it off. I’m proud of the comeback and I hate the goal tend call, but if we really played like we should against such a depleted team, we would have won.
Stop with the whinning about the no call on the goaltending.
I understand the call was terrible, but there was no excuse not to win this game in OT after most of their top players fouled out. Not trying to be a downer, but we missed a heck of an opportunity to get a big road W tonight. This team needs to learn how to win because when it counted they had a younger team on the floor and still won it so youth is no excuse
thats true
but they were bench players. We had our full compliment of players basically the whole game.
by marylandfan145 on Feb 1, 2012 10:52 PM EST up reply actions
No.
Stop it with the normative crap. Should we have won? Yes. Should we be an NCAA tournament team? Well, that would be nice. You know what, while we’re at it, let’s go undefeated. That’d be swell!
Doesn’t matter what should’ve happened. Matters what did. And what did was they missed a goaltending call.
ive had enough of moral victories the past 2 years. I really dont get how we didnt win, there 3 leading scorers were fouled out?
btw, if that guy doesnt make that 3 pointer from south of the equator in the 1st overtime, we win by 5-7 points
Honestly think the calls
spiralled out of control for the refs. It’s as if their heads were spinning and they knew they weren’t on their game….absolutely horrid.
Brian Dorsey (Bald ref) has a quick whistle and an ego.
He called all four Technicals, but three of them were warranted.
Not just that though
It was as if the officiating in general hit a snag. You ever get those times where you’re not in your game, and it like…continues for a while, but you KNOW you’re not on your game and you still do it anyway? That was what this was like…reptilian brain syndrome
Three of the four technicals were legit
I would not have called the second technical on Turgeon. Both T’s against Miami were warranted.
Don’t blame the refs. We had were given ample opportunities to win this game
Completely agree
As evidenced by the fact half of their team fouled out lol

What our game plan should've been the rest of the game after Jackson got his 5th
1. Look inside to Len/Padge
2. If they’re not open, drive and look for someone
3. If the pass isn’t there, go to the hoop and look to make contact
Instead, we got 15+ 3 attempts from Stogs… can’t imagine Turge would approve.
1800+ posts!
We should all just stick in here for another 150 or so and get it to 2000 ;)
bummer
needed to push it inside with their bigs out. How come Parker and Berend got little PT in 2nd half after solid 1st halves?
As a long time terp fan
the good wins outnumber the bad losses. We let Miami win this game. They didn’t deserve it, but we lost it ourselves. Bottom line is that our players have to play smarter, and we didn’t tonight.
by Snappin Terp on Feb 1, 2012 11:05 PM EST up reply actions
I don't underandt why Weiss wasn't in instead of Padge.
No offense to Padge, but he’s only 6’7’’ or so. Weiss is a legit 6’10’’ The guy covering Padge was 6’6’’. Weiss would have eaten that 6’6’’ guy alive and would have helped on the boards.
I'm with you
But I would have looked to Padge/Len in the 3rd OT. As you can see from my previous posts that I’m the biggest Stogs fanboy alive, but we should have been looking to exploit them on the block late in the game. I just don’t get it. Stogs was going insane, but we needed to slow down those possessions and look to the interior
I thought Len and Weijs played well together in the first half
I like that combination. Especially with their size against a smaller front line for Miami, save fatso Reggie Johnson
Game over, positives people
16 down, on the road. Really. Wished we’d won, but one hell of a game. They are getting it. I’m loving the future.
Yes
Games like this definitely build character. They won’t go home with a win, but I definitely think we grew up a little right there.
And man, it’s so enjoyable watching a season without expectations! If we lost this any other year I’d be totally pissed, but even with the loss I find myself sitting here grinning thinking of the future. Bright days ahead!
we should've won going away
that call wasn’t huge. wasn’t all that obvious either, the way that ball stayed on the rim. we had a huge advantage with the foul outs and settled for stoglin chucking 3’s on way too many possessions.

This team is not good, I still love em, but reality is reality.
Mistakes galore, signs of a young team. How Len couldn’t dominate in overtime scares me. I don’t know how you can teach a 7 footer to win a rebound against a 6 footer, should come natural you’d think. Glad to see Turge finally made a stand with that Tech, been waiting on that for the last few games.
Recap is up.
I’ll be updating it throughout the night slightly, but it’s up. Let’s shift the discussion over there.
