National Signing Day 2012 Open Thread

via www.betbigdc.com

National Signing Day is finally here, folks. All but one of Maryland's verbal commits have faxed in their LOI's (Dallas Griffiths is headed to Liberty). Four-star defensive tackle Korren Kirven announced for Alabama earlier, which means D.J. Reader is the only big fish left for the Terps, although rumor has it he's headed for Clemson. We'll keep you updated in this thread as the names come in, and we'll have FanShots for any surprises.

Use this thread for all your NSD 2012 needs.

Here's the list:

Isaac Goins (enrolled early)

Levern Jacobs (enrolled early)

P.J. Gallo

Alvin Hill

Nick Brigham

Stefan Houston

Malcolm Culmer

Kenneth Goins

Late late chatter is D.J. Reader to Clemson. Sounds like it’s close, though. Would be huge to pull this kid – we really need him.

I’m afraid the Terps are going to get shut out today.

Yup

I have the same feeling… Scout reporting Darby and Goldman to FSU

Stefon Diggs

He’s not signing on signing day, but apparently Ron Zook thinks the Terps have a shot at him with Locksley, his old OC – http://www.maxpreps.com/news/z-3xbAH250ON8OIxmdc7iA/maryland-to-snag-stefon-diggs.htm

cool

I think Edsall’s made more tweets today than he’s done in the past six months.

All that's left

Is Sean Davis, Dallas Griffiths and Abner Logan. Looks like this might be a boring signing day after all.

Idk if this is old news or not

But diggs is visiting Maryland this weekend. Would he be one of our biggest recruits ever?

Arg

I was really hoping we would get one of the big names… But it doesn’t look like it.

by rquidas on Feb 1, 2012 9:32 AM EST via Android app reply actions

that makes no sense

Liberty sucks. University isnt that great nor is it a powerhouse. If you are going to go to D1-AA you might as well go to the Southern Conference. App State, Elon, Ga Southern, Wofford, etc would all have been better choices. Or go to Richmond or Villanova… LIBERTY??? Wow.

by Charlotte NC Terp on Feb 1, 2012 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

Christian connection

That’s what it seems to be here. Griffiths went to North Florida Christian High School, maybe he felt it was important to continue that.

Testudo Times - http://www.testudotimes.com

by Pete Volk on Feb 1, 2012 9:49 AM EST up reply actions

pretty sure ..

that his older brother is there

by FlaTerp on Feb 1, 2012 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

There is a Chase Griffiths

From North Florida Christian on Liberty’s roster. Good catch.

Testudo Times - http://www.testudotimes.com

by Pete Volk on Feb 1, 2012 9:53 AM EST up reply actions

But it's also definitely that Christian aspect...

which is why his brother transferred there from South Florida in the first place (I think), it appears the Griffiths family, with all due respect, is on the more zealous end of things.

by Joe Bradshaw on Feb 1, 2012 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

Just to note

Lots of people attend Catholic/religious schools and it isn’t important to them. But it very well may be to this kid, appears like it given that’s where his brother transferred to.

by ckstevenson on Feb 1, 2012 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

Apples and oranges...

Kids who go to Liberty, are not the same as kids who go to Dematha. Liberty is a RELIGIOUS school, founded by Reverend Fallwell… Need I say more?

Children should be seen and not heard.

by CharlesDriesell on Feb 1, 2012 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

Just pointing out

that his HS doesn’t necessarily have any bearing.

That he went to Liberty, yes, does indicate it matters. But public school kids go to Liberty as well, so it was not really of benefit to point to his HS as an indicator.

by ckstevenson on Feb 1, 2012 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

Interesting info from Griffiths in his BaSu profile

From the great Matt Bracken (http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/recruiting-blog/bal-meet-the-recruit-terps-linebacker-commitment-dallas-griffiths-20120120,0,1296152.story)

Role model: "My brother just because I’ve seen what he’s done and what he’s gone through. He’s become a really good man. I try to model myself after him."

Why Maryland? "Because I just felt like that what’s I wanted to do. Both my dad and my brother have played DI ball, and I wanted to do so as well."

by ckstevenson on Feb 1, 2012 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

anything else for us to keep an eye on today?

We need numbers ...

This class isn’t finished … we got pickett and maybe 1 other after NSD last year and I’m expecting some late adds this year too. Griffiths is out, plus all the transfers. We definitely aren’t done.

Totally forgot about Quinton Jefferson

From UMTerps: Note: Three members of the 2012 class – Isaac Goins, Quinton Jefferson (signed in 2011) and Levern Jacobs – enrolled in school in January will not be signing NLIs.

Bball signing day

Is there a late basketball signing day or just the early one? This is my first full year hell bent on following recruiting. What is the last day players for either sport can sign?

by rquidas on Feb 1, 2012 11:26 AM EST via Android app reply actions

I was just thinking the same. ironic because I just saw this tweet

Should basketball switch to one signing period? I say no unless @PaulBiancardi and I get a 10-hour show on @ESPNU #nationalsigningday

by Maryland1206 on Feb 1, 2012 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

Stefon is visiting on Saturday, and his host is ...

Danny O’Brien. That’ll either be awesome (Diggs hosted by his future QB and face of MD program) or horrible (if Danny is planning on transferring).

I’ll hope for the first.

by Ben Broman on Feb 1, 2012 12:39 PM EST via Android app reply actions

Nah

Pretty sure if Edsall had even the slightest idea Danny was bolting he wouldn’t have him hosting anyone.

by Terpentine on Feb 1, 2012 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

I think this says alot...

about Danny O’Brien’s future in College Park. He’s the projected starter and Edsall thinks of him as an asset to the program.

Children should be seen and not heard.

Other 3-star offers

Hey, there are like 5 other uncommitted 3-star guys listed under OFFERS on the ESPN site. What’s up with them?

by meryl_and_tara_penn on Feb 1, 2012 12:55 PM EST reply actions

FSU commits

They have five 5* commits and six 4*. And I predict they still will not win the ACC with Jimbo in command.

by Snappin Terp on Feb 1, 2012 1:38 PM EST reply actions

We really bombed today didn't we.

Doubt we’ll get Diggs or Darby. Everybody was saying Goldman was more of a lock. At least he could have taken his talents to Bama and not stayed in the ACC.

We got shellacked guys.

by db0255 on Feb 1, 2012 1:38 PM EST reply actions

Everywhere I saw

Diggs as a greater chance than Goldman, who took us off his list weeks ago and didn’t O-Visit, Diggs will this weekend.

by PhillyTerp on Feb 1, 2012 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

We have a legit shot with Diggs

Getting the last visit is huge. I can’t for the life of me understand why all of the national analysts seem so clueless when it comes to Diggs. Let’s see. He visits Auburn, and Auburn’s the leader. Then he visits Florida, and so Florida is the leader. Then Ohio State, and people are saying now they’re in the running out of nowhere.

Diggs is an agreeable guy who hasn’t done anything in the recruiting process until about a month ago. He’s enjoying everywhere because that’s the type of guy he is. He’ll enjoy the visit here. Not saying we get him, but after he visits people will be saying “Oh, Maryland’s making a push!”

by Ben Broman on Feb 1, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

I was reading somewhere

That Maryland was in the top 10 in terms of developing NFL talent, Especially at the wide receiver position, where guys like Torrey Smith and Vernon Davis were making serious plays during championship weekend. That’s something that really needs to be stressed, considering he will probably end up being the next big playmaker they way those two are. Imagine him running wild on a defense the way sammy watkins did to us last season…

by fballplyr92 on Feb 1, 2012 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Agree

And the other thing people are generally overlooking is that this is the first signing day I can remember in a long time that we actually thought we had a chance at someone like Goldman, Kirven, Darby etc., not to mention Wes Brown, who I’ll venture to say would not be a Terp if this were still the Fridge/Franklin era. We had no pattern of success with local kids of that caliber unless they were lifelong fans hell-bent on coming here like Kenny Tate. Brown was a Miami fan. He wasn’t even considering us six months ago. We stayed in the game with the best recruits the area had to offer and they all put some serious thought into Maryland right up until the end even though we had a miserable season. That’s progress. In prior years, Jelani Jenkins and the Kouandijos didn’t give us the time of day.

If you look at the kids we recruited and the kids who considered us this year, we actually did way better than any of the last few years before. We just didn’t close the deal. And that’s to be expected when you go 2-10 and don’t bring in any coaches who can recruit until January.

by FlaTerp on Feb 1, 2012 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Is anyone taking any hope

that as of almost 5pm neither Darby nor Alabama commit Cyrus Jones have signed?

by FHFAN on Feb 1, 2012 4:56 PM EST reply actions

Darby gone to FSU

by 1 proud terp on Feb 1, 2012 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

Announcement coverage

I find these live or otherwise media-promoted announcement events a little unseemly.

Fans of the program probably enjoy the coverage, and the program benefits from the exposure, but I don’t see how the recruit benefits in any way.
