With Coach Turgeon still experimenting and tinkering with different lineup combinations. I thought it would be interesting to figure out the statistics of the different lineups the Terps have used so far. (Also, I had a lot of time on my hands over the holidays...)
So, I went through the play-by-plays for each game at umterps.com and computed the stats for every lineup combination the terps have used so far this season (except for the Lafayette game, which doesn't have substitution info).
Random stats: Coach Turgeon has played 78 lineup combinations this season (not including lineups with walk-ons). The starting lineup has played 87 minutes together. No other lineup combination has seen more than 15 and a half minutes of action. Most of those 78 combinations only played together for a few minutes, so the sample size is too small to draw many conclusions about individual lineups.
Instead, I've decided to look at the team's performance with selected combinations of players in the lineup.
Pe'Shon Howard vs. Seth Allen Here are the stats when Pe'Shon Howard is in the lineup compared to when Seth Allen is in the game:
| Lineup | Time On Court | Possessions | Points Per Poss | Opp Points Per Poss | Efficiency Margin | 2p% | 3p% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pe'Shon only | 3:28:14 | 353 | 1.04 | 0.86 | 0.18 | 0.55 | 0.27 |
| Seth only | 2:35:22 | 265 | 1.14 | 0.81 | 0.33 | 0.58 | 0.36 |
| Both Pe'Shon and Seth | 1:05:33 | 117 | 1.21 | 0.84 | 0.37 | 0.57 | 0.54 |
Based on this, it looks like there is strong justification for the calls for more playing time for Seth Allen at the expense of Pe'Shon.
Shooting guard: Logan Aronhalt vs Nick Faust How valuable is Logan Aronhalt's 3 point shooting vs. Nick Faust's overall game? Not that valuable, it turns out.
| Lineup | Time On Court | Possessions | Points Per Poss | Opp Points Per Poss | Efficiency Margin | 2p% | 3p% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nick Faust only | 3:42:19 | 379 | 1.11 | 0.92 | 0.19 | 0.56 | 0.29 |
| Logan Aronhalt only | 1:17:43 | 130 | 1.0 | 0.78 | 0.22 | 0.47 | 0.37 |
| Faust and Aronhalt together | 0:50:55 | 82 | 1.18 | 0.59 | 0.59 | 0.6 | 0.42 |
As a sanity check, I ran the numbers on Alex Len:
| Lineup | Time On Court | Possessions | Points Per Poss | Opp Points Per Poss | Efficiency Margin | 2p% | 3p% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alex Len in | 4:30:55 | 464 | 1.13 | 0.79 | 0.34 | 0.56 | 0.34 |
| Alex Len sitting out | 2:49:05 | 290 | 1.06 | 0.93 | 0.13 | 0.55 | 0.35 |
Yeah, Alex Len is really good.
This is my first FanPost so please forgive me if the formatting of these tables is wrong. I'm sitting on a lot of terps data now, so if there's any other similar comparisons you'd like to see, please let me know!
