Much has been made about the large quantity of players who have left the team since RE was hired. Quite a few large numbers have been talked about, with the general implication being the team is severely limited by the defections. We all know a few big names, but who are the missing pieces? What have they been doing the last year or two, and where could they have helped the 2011 & 2012 Terps?
I decided to compare the 2010 roster with the 2011 and 2012 rosters and find who left early, where did they go/what are they doing, and try to make a rough guess of the impact to the team. After reviewing all the players I grouped them into 3 categories - players who left for good reason and no coaching staff could realistically be blamed, guys who left who appear to not have much impact if they stayed (buried beyond the two deep), and those we probably could have used.
On the 2010 roster, but not on the 2011 roster
Left team, not likely as a result of anything RE did:
Haroon Brown (RB, Jr.) - Graduated Early, Left Football
Taylor Watson (RB, Jr.) - Graduated Early, Left Football
Torrey Smith (WR, Jr.) - NFL
Derek Drummond (DL, Jr.) - Graduated Early, transferred to Abilene Christian University
Justin Lewis (OL, So.) - Dismissed from team, transfer to FCS NCCU, starting OL
Left team, not likely becoming an impact player for Terps:
Ian Davidson (DL, Jr.) - Transfer to FCS Hampton, played 11 games 2011
Gary Douglas (RB, So.) - Transfer to FCS NCCU, reserve RB with 240 yds rushing in 16 games over 2 years
Ben Pooler (LB, Jr.) - Graduated, transfer to Cinci., reserve LB 2011
Jamarr Robinson (QB, Jr.) - Graduated, transfer to Bethune-Cookman, backup QB 2011
Kalvin Seamonson (DB, Fr.) - Transfer to D3 Salisbury, as QB DNP 2011, not on roster 2012
Tyler Smith (QB, Fr.) - Transfer to FCS Elon, backup QB
Parker Vail (WR, Fr.) - Transfer to Nevada, reserve WR - DNP 2012
Left team, might have become an impact player for Terps
Zachariah Kerr (DL, So.) - Academically Ineligible, Transfer to FCS Delaware, starting DL in 2012
Lamonte Gaddis (RB, Fr.) - Transfer to Dean Junior College played LB in 2011, then transferred to FCS Towson for 2012, all CAA 2nd team as a Jr.
Ryan Donohue (LB, So.) - Transfer to Uconn, reserve LB, 5 games played 2012
Travis Hawkins (DB, Fr. RS) - Transfer to FCS Delaware, starting DB
Kerr and Gaddis could not have played here in 2011 due to academics, but may have found the 2-deep at some point in future.
After the miserable year in 2011, the next batch of RF guys pulled out:
On the 2011 roster, but not on the 2012 roster
Left team, not likely as a result of anything RE did:
Pete DeSouza (OL, So. RS) - Still at MD, left football due to non-football injury
Desmond Kearse (DB, Fr. RS) - Dismissed for Academics
Ian Evans (DL, Fr. RS) - Left school for personal reasons Aug 2012, NFI
Lukas Foreman (DB, Fr.) - Suspended for 2012 season, left school
(Note: Foreman was actually a RE recruit in 2011 - only non-Fridge recruit to make this list)
Left team, not likely becoming an impact player for Terps:
Cody Blue (DL, So. RS) - Left program, NFI
Adrian Coxson (WR, Fr.RS) - Transfer to FCS Stony Brook, backup WR 2012 with 10 catches in 13 games
Avery Graham (DB, So. RS) - Transfer to FCS Stony Brook, played in 4 games as reserve
Rahsaan Moore (RB, Fr. RS) - Transfer to FCS ODU, left ODU in June 2012
Jeremiah Wilson (DB, Fr. RS) - Transfer to FCS JMU, backup DB/KR
Left team, might have become an impact player for Terps:
D.J. Adams (RB, So. RS) - Transfer to FCS Portland State, in 11 games 2012 led team in rushing (164 for 967yds)
R.J. Dill (OL, Jr.) - Graduated, Transfer to Rutgers for Sr year, started all 12 games
Max Garcia (OL, So.) - Transfer to Florida, sitting out 2012
David Mackall (LB, So.) - Transfer to FCS Delaware, DNP in 2012
Danny O’Brien (QB, So. RS) - Graduated, transfer to Wisc, backup QB
Mario Rowson (DB, Fr. RS) - Transfer to FCS Delaware, DNP 2012
Titus Till (DB, Fr. RS) - Transfer to FCS JMU, starting safety
From this list I think clearly DOB and the O-lineman (Dill & Garcia) were what we missed most last year the way things played out. Adams would have been useful, but we had quality replacements. Same for Mackall. Till may have seen some run at a safety position as well.
Checking on some of these names was a bit of a trip down memory lane, and its good to see how many of the former Terps are doing OK. I would say that it is quite clear that a large number of these transfers were guys so far down the depth chart (many not even making the 2-deep at FCS schools) it makes you wonder how they were recruited in the first place.
All of this info was gathered from public web portals for the schools in question and from news outlet reporting. I intentionally left out certain details from community forum type sources. I will say that there was quite a few academic and university issues that played into some of the transfers - while not exactly a RE fan I do have a little more respect for the position he was in as he took heat for all of these transfers leaving, and its clear that his hands were tied in several cases.
