So... I went to see Roddy play last night against Oxon Hill, who for those not in the area have a storied basketball tradition but, a very mediocre team this year.
Anyway, I came away with mixed feelings. First, for a player being ranked as high as he is, he definitely didn’t blow me away with any one aspect of his game. His jumper looks pure but, wasn’t falling, his handle/crossover isn’t deadly but, effective at the high school level (will need to be tightened up a lot to bring the ball up the court in the ACC/B1G) and his athleticism is slightly above average. However, the single most thing that left me wanting more was his assertiveness. He was definitely coasting through the first 3 quarters, and then came the 4th!
In the 4th quarter it became apparent why scouts love him so much. He is every bit of the 6’4 scouts give him and pushing 6’5 and a solid 195-200 lbs. Definitely a pg because of his willingness to pass to teammates who could barely catch his fast break passes, let alone convert the assist. He is a long strider who looks rather slow running up and down the court until you see him gliding past the smaller quick guards. Finally his best attribute right now at this level might be his strength. He got fouled almost everytime he went to the basket and he was sending dudes flying into the wall padding.
If I were Turge and the staff I would have Roddy make love to the weight room. He has a body that is waiting to become defined and desperately needs the lower body strength to bring out the explosiveness. Bottom line, we shouldn’t expect him to come in and take Seth/Peshon’s spot next yr but, if he buys in he won’t be around past his Jr. yr. Oh and Seth Allen is the TRUTH... been waiting to say that on here :)
