At last some good news Soccer moves on to the Sweet Sixteen

It was a chilly evening at Ludwig Field tonight but the Maryland men’s soccer team sent most of the crowd of 1663 home happy taking down the Brown University Bears (you’d think that an Ivy League school would be able to come up with something more creative than Brown Bears, wouldn’t you?) 2-1. The Terps now move on to the Sweet Sixteen where they will face Coastal Carolina who surprised 15th seeded Wake Forest by the same score. Since I want to finish the weekend on a high note writing about the only Maryland win, I’ll mention here that the Terps volleyball team suffered another straight set loss today at 23rd ranked Miami Sunday afternoon. Ashleigh Crutcher led the team in kills with 12 while junior Mary Cushman added ten. Freshman setter Mackenzie Dagostino had 22 assists and has a team leading 657 for the season. No Terp reached double digits in digs. The Hurricanes held Maryland to a .144 hitting percentage in the 25-18, 25-19, 25-15 win. Maryland will close out the season Saturday at Boston College. *****************************************************************************************************************************

Now on to the good stuff though early on it didn’t look like this would be a happy write-up either. Although Maryland had an early corner kick it was the Bears who would break the ice first knocking in a header off a corner of their own in the 16th minute. Brown’s well shaped defense and propensity to push their strikers forward seemed to be troubling the Terps throughout the early portion of the game and the Bears barely missed an opportunity to take a 2-0 lead when a shot in the 22nd minute went just wide. The teams played fairly evenly for the next five minutes or so and while Patrick Mullins managed to get off two shots during this time neither was a particularly good opportunity. The Terps began to ratchet up the pressure in the 24th minute getting developing chances getting off three shots and settimg themselves up with 2 corners. They were unable to break through until the 43rd minute when Patrick Mullins managed to clear a little space and sent off a laser beam of a shot at the near right post from thirty or thirty-five yards past a diving Brown goalkeeper. Neither team threatened in the remaining time going into the half knotted at one. Coming out of the locker room Maryland looked a little more like Maryland pushing forward pressing Brown’s defense and keeping long possessions in the Bears defensive half. The Terps were able to develop some good opportunities with Brown’s goalie coming up with a big save on a Mullins header in the 56th minute. Maryland caught a bit of a break in the 76th minute when the Bears were able to get a man behind the Terps defense on one of their few successful counter-attacks but he rushed his shot a bit and it went just wide of the far post. As the clock wound down Brown was whistled for a foul. Helge Leikvang played the ball into the box from about 40 yards out and in the ensuing scramble Dan Metzger was able to redirect it in with just under a minute remaining. The Terps played a smart last minute sending long high balls out of bounds or out of their defensive end and secured the 2-1 victory. Maryland will host Sunday’s game against Costal Carolina as the Terrapins continue their quest for a third College Cup.
