Maryland Minute 1.5.12: Texas A&M Point Guard Transfer Jamal Branch Considering Terps

Zags: Jamal Branch considering Maryland
Hmmm. More coming later today, but Branch, if you didn't hear, was Turgeon's biggest get at A&M, a 2011 top-50 point guard. He'd be eligible in 2013 unless he decided basically right now, which is a bit close to the Harrisons for my taste. More soon.

ScoutsFocus: Aquille Carr might commit to Maryland today?
Uh?

And a coach recruiting him believes he'll choose Maryland
Double uh? He himself says the Terps haven't been much in contact lately and I'd be really surprised to see him at Maryland for dozens of reasons, not the least of which has to do with a certain Harrison Twins.

Randy Shannon agrees to become Tennessee DC
More coming on this, too. So I guess it's down to LJ?

Star-divide

Bill O'Brien agrees to be Penn State Nittany Lions coach, sources say - ESPN
In case you were interested. I imagine he'll decide pretty quickly if he's going to retain Larry Johnson - I wouldn't expect him to - and if not, Maryland should act quickly.

DeMatha TE-DE Brent Wilkerson opens recruitment
His recruiter at Penn State? Larry Johnson. Hmmm. He isn't considering Maryland right now and I don't believe Locks' DM connections are that strong, but if Johnson came on board you'd have to think Maryland would stand a very good shot. Sort of a Jason Goode type at TE, I believe.

More on Wes Brown
Because why wouldn't you want more on Wes Brown?

Asked whether he could help turn around the Terps, who finished 2-10 in head coach Randy Edsall's first season in College Park, Brown said, "I'll let the blogs do the talking. There's nothing much I can say. I'm going to do my job. I hope the others around me do theirs."

If he's referencing us, I will be glad to talk about you, Wes.

A primer for the ACC season - ESPN
Nice little rundown from ESPN. They've got the Terps finishing 8th (too low IMO), and Terrell Stoglin as a candidate for player of the year (so far). - BG

Former Maryland RB Lance Ball talks about his year with the Denver Broncos - Terrapins Insider
Lance's catch-and-run against Navy is still one of my favorite football memories since the WVU demolition in the Gator Bowl. Glad to see him catching on in Denver with the Fightin' Tebows.

The Harrisons

Here’s my take on the Harrisons:

Yes, they’re awesome and they appear to like Maryland. BUT. I suspect they’ll go to Kentucky, and even if they don’t they’re so good that every major program will put the full-scale assault on them throughout this year.

When we talk about awesome PGs like Branch, Britt, Aquille and some of you guys say you don’t want to take them because of the Harrisons, I think that’s straight crazy.

Jamal Branch & Aquille Carr are major talents. 2-5 years ago we’d have killed for players like that when instead we were signing Adrian Bowie. If the Harrisons want to come to Maryland, they will. They can go wherever they want and whatever team they choose will already have good guards on their roster.

Jamal Branch? Aquille Carr? Yes please.

exactly.

plus…who wouldn’t want the crime stopper on their team?! instant fan favorite!

I agree

I think that the Harrison twins are better then Cleare, and I think that the Harrison twins committing to Maryland may be two of the biggest commitments that Maryland basketball has ever had. However, you don’t say no to a player like Aquille because you are hoping you’ll get the twins.

by Brendan Plutschak on Jan 6, 2012 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

don't say no to the others

but some can be on hold until we get the word – that’s if they are not ready to commit anyhow, which a lot are not ready to do. Branch is an exception – he’d be a big addition.

THANK YOU!!!!!!

I’m all for the Harrisson twins, and would give my left nutt to see them commit to the TERPS, but realistically, there is a GOOD GOOD GOOD chance they play elsewhere……which makes me say, “f this, give me Carr any day of the week.” I know he is undersized, but that kid can ball, throw in Branch, and I’ll be a happy camper at the PG position. I love Pe…..but if he can’t beat a guy off the dribble, and learn how to make a play when we need it the most, then a quick pass happy PG is something we desperately need…..especially since all the other pieces are coming together. If this is true and CARR commits to MD, I will be ecstatic.

not good good

just possible. If we are going to reach for the stars, and then reach them, this is a very very good chance for US – I’ll go with Bino!!! He thinks can recruit God!

I think that is the perfect analogy here.

I swear...

I saw him behind the bench during MM – maybe I was wrong. Does he have an offer from UMD? If so, then I presume the coaching staff would be thrilled?

holy point gaurds

We are flush with PG’s & rumors of PG’s! As for aquille I would love to get him but im scared he wont end up being able to clear academically, or last 4yrs academically. So even if he does commit im not going to get excited til I see him on the floor. But if and when I do man that will be exctiting all right!

I saw from Zagoria

That Branch is favoring St. Johns over Maryland, Arizona and a couple other schools

by Ashmed21 on Jan 6, 2012 10:58 AM EST via mobile reply actions

St. Johns and Zags

First off anytime Zags reports, he always mentions a Big East school primarily St. Johns. Also anytime a report comes out that Maryland is being considered by a recruit, Zags always has us as the runner up or underdog.

St. Johns, have you seend the Johnnies play this year….NOT GOOD!!! They lost two players that were suppose to be main contributors due to academics. Lavin is dealing with Cancer issues, not joking about it, but he has longevitiy issues as being the coach there.

with all due respect

SJ’s is not “good” this year is accurate in a similar way to stating that we’re not good. SJ’s has all young players w/o much experience that are learning the ropes. They prolly will win 4 conference games this season, but it’s only setting the stage for next season. They’ll be fine. With the Garden and NYC, if Lavs is healthy and there they’ll have no problem drawing in recruits. I bet they’ll still get Gathers, and would not be surprised to see Wood still go there or Branch wind up there. I like Branch here better cuz he already committed to Turge once. Sadly, with Billy Kennedy’s illness, it may have had an effect on him much like Lavs’ illness did with recruits.

Jeff Goodman just tweeted

That Jamal Branch is visiting St. John’s this weekend and Maryland next weekend

by terpsallday on Jan 6, 2012 10:59 AM EST reply actions

I called it the other day

SJ’s needs a PG desperately. Lenn Robbins of the the NY Post is reporting that Branch is going to verbal to SJ’s. Which tells me he a) he really does want to play in the Beast; b) Turge and the staff are cookin’ up something else for 2013 :)

St johns

Seems to be in a state of chaos. Didn’t they just lose another player last week? I don’t think he will end up there. Md bound. Visiting next weekend… I’m sure it’s an official. Doubt he flies to NYC this weekend and md next weekend.

by Charlotte NC Terp on Jan 6, 2012 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

Only Chaos now

is Coach Lavin getting healthy. The recovery time for surgeries like his (prostate) usually take months to heal. He tried to come back right away, so he’s in a holding pattern, not bench coaching but traveling to recruit (his specialty). I predict he’ll make a late February comeback to the bench just to ease Gathers’ and Woods’ minds, as well as anybody else who’s serious about going there (Sampson and Pelle are big question marks).

just saw cbssports piece

see, it’s not as bad as some think. With Darrick Woods case, I just think the uncertainty and his high level of play this season is making him test the waters to see if there’s more interest from the big boys.

my goodness i watched them play Louisville the other day...

no offense whatsoever…how can any team lose to that garbage…Lavin is a difference maker since he wasn’t on the sidelines during that game…

They played poorly

but also lit up Providence for 92 points. Young teams play good one day, horrible the next. That game was painful to watch.

Didn't...

St Johns just have like one of the best recruiting classes ever?? how do they not have a PG?

by rl09978 on Jan 6, 2012 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

All have left

Except for harkless and the kid who was drafted as a pitcher by the reds I believe. Im also forgetting about the pg who played in the Jordan classic. Think his last name started w an S. he was great in the all star game. Not sure how he is doing this season

by Charlotte NC Terp on Jan 6, 2012 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

PG Nuri Lindsey left

possibly due to grades. He was out of HS and basketball for over a year, and got into Redlands CC in Okla. b4 transferring into SJ’s. I read posts that speculated he was not attending class, and his academics were in trouble. Needless to say, he had trouble adjusting to college life as well as structured bball (which he was not playing).

The rest of their guards are combos. D’Angelo Harrison is a very good shooter, but not a natural distributor. Phil Greene the same, but more a 6th-7th man off the bench. He’s starting at PG now out of need.

Amir Garrett (Mr. 95mph fastball) is more of a 3, playing 2 some to help out there. Harkless is impressive – set Beast all-time Frosh record with 32 vs. Providence last week. Usually plays in spurts though.

They need help at the point like we did b4 Pe’ came back. Having no natural PG can be a real fly in the ointment. Branch is going to decide between us and his 1st coach Turge, Lavs and Texas killer Buzz Williams. Williams is from TX, and has been getting a lot of big recruits from Texas.

Missed the UA game last night, anyone find Wes brown highlights we can watch?

by grasshugger7 on Jan 6, 2012 11:12 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Darrick wood- 4 star sg decommited from st johns last night and md called him right away. Us, uconn, and Memphis are after him. Originally from dc! Saw a tweet saying he wants md to offer! Wouldn’t be surprised if branch and wood end up being the backcourt duo we have been searching for.

by Charlotte NC Terp on Jan 6, 2012 12:05 PM EST reply actions

That is great news

Wood played at the Reebok John Wall breakout camp too. His reviews were glowing as well.

Wood has an improved handle this season, which lets him penetrate even more. His outside shot is solid, and his passing is very advanced.

The Breakout write up from SLAM mag (same site posted from Seth):

Darrick Wood, Alexandria, VA, 6-4, 170 pounds, St. John’s

Wood is unassuming as a physical specimen, his spindly body still yet to fill out. But then you watch him dunk a basketball. Wood threw down a pair of tomahawks that rocked the gym during one training session, followed by an impromptu dunk contest… against himself. The DC-area native’s explosiveness is apparent on his jumpshot, too, as his rise-and-hit ability should allow him to get his shot off when he takes on the Big East at St. John’s. The NBA contingent appreciated Wood’s competitiveness—Thomas praised Wood’s ability to "back up all his talking."

The instant camaraderie among the pros and the prospects was unmistakable. "I think Jason said it best, it’s like a family atmosphere here," said Thomas. And for the NBA players enduring what Sessions called a "different" summer, it was a welcome chance to enjoy each other’s company.

For Reebok, it’s about finding diamond in the rough-type talent and a return to being a basketball powerhouse. Which starts with Wall, whose infectious personality seemed to rub off on everyone in the building, his smile as wide as any of the high school kids. On the court, he zoomed around in his new signature sneaker, the Zig Encore, and looked to have an improved jumper to go with his dazzling speed.

As for whether we might see him at a rumored Las Vegas summer league during the continued lockout, Wall didn’t hesitate. In fact, he sounded like his Reebok pupils. "I’m there. Whenever there’s a league or a chance to be around pro guys, I’m there."

Bill O'Brien and Penn State values

Hiring O’Brien may be the first action by PSU to accept responsibility for allowing Sandusky to prey on children for ten years. O’Brien has no previous ties with their program. According to ESPN, PSU actually side-stepped their search committee. Who knows if he will be encouraged to replace the current staff with more outsiders. Based on interviews and comments, PSU has a bigger problem and that is their values. Too many still think of the scandal as an “on-balance” issue. The 10-year cover-up by the PSU administrators, the AD, and Paterno of a sexual assault of a minor at their facilities that McCreary witnessed is not an “on-balance” issue. Learning that a colleague/friend had sexually assaulted a minor and believing it occurred, I am certain that very few of us would have done what Paterno, Curley, et al did. I believe that we would have either gone to the police or confronted that friend to gave him the opportunity to turn himself in first. Their insistence that the cover-up is not about the university nor its football program is why I think Paterno and probably Spanier were forced out by PA Attorney General Kelly rather than the PSU board of trustees. By leaving without a whimper and agreeing to testify for the prosecution in the AD Curley and VP Schultz perjury cases, Paterno may even have avoided a conspiracy charge. During the grand jury investigation, Kelly did not pursue Paterno’s interactions with AD Curley about Sandusky so we don’t know to what extent he was involved in the cover-up. We should know more as the criminal and civil cases proceed. Maybe what is revealed about the measures they took to protect their image and that of PSU and its football program for almost a decade while Sandusky preyed on more victims will be enough to open some eyes. They may even understand the contempt that some of us have for their decision to play the bowl game this year and donate some of the proceeds to charity, more image management measures.
