ESPN Confidential report on Football recruits

http://insider.espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7507020/ncf-recruiting-confidential-gets-scoop-45-espnu-150-prospects-espn-magazine

Insider article, but I'll copy paste the part I thought was ridiculous.

ON CAMPUS VISITS, WERE DRUGS OR ALCOHOL AVAILABLE?
No: 59.1 percent
Yes: 40.9 percent
The majority (59.1 percent) says no. But the other 40.9 percent isn't buying the naysayers' answers. "If anybody tells you that stuff isn't around, they're lying," says one linebacker. "Nobody ever pushed it on me. But nobody ever said 'no way' when I asked about it either."

It isn't the first part of the quote that troubles me, since it is a true statement. It is the second part about recruits asking for it that troubles me. It could be a recruit with great intentions checking out to see if its a good program or not (I hope so), but sounds to me the recruit was checking to see if it was available...Thoughts?

I don't like it, but i'm not surprised in the slightest

Its college. And, well, kids that are almost in college.

To be fair,

I bet if you did the same survey with non-athletes who did overnight visits, these numbers would be very similar. This seems like more of a symptom of alcohol and drug use at colleges more than a recruiting scandal. As T Free so eloquently put it, It’s college.

this is the kind of thing that keeps coaches up at night . . .

you’ve got kids doing things that the administration will throw you under the bus for if they become public (not to mention they’re illegal, even if they’re illegal with a wink and a nod).

Of course, if schools don’t want recruits drinking, they don’t have to have them visit on weekends when there aren’t any academic folks around anyway . . .

Honestly

Nowadays so many kids are doing it in high school, its just expected that alcohol and marijuana would be available for them when they visit/go to college. The school doesn’t matter, its just impossible to restrict and regulate the levels at which this occurs… cops have a hard enough time attempting to keep regular students from doing it, good luck stopping the overly-popular athletes. Especially in an area like this, police have robberies/assaults/other non victimless crimes to deal with, half the time they don’t even punish students anymore.

Exactly.

It starts in high school. I’d be surprised if the majority of athletes haven’t been exposed to drugs and alcohol before visits.

Agree...

I’m sure that 9 out of 10 HS basketball players that take “official” visits to schools have at least been at a party where marijuana was being smoked and perhaps smoked themselves. And probably 99.99% have been to a party where alcohol was being consumed. Marijuana is just as common nowadays in high school, definitely more accessible, than alcohol is.

Alcohol and College visits

I dont know about many of you, but I played college baseball and on my recruiting visits there was alcohol at 100% of my visits. Once I was in college I hosted many recruits at my house with my teammates and alcohol was there 100% of the time. Not a big deal, its college and thats what 99% of athletes do during there down time.

I surprised...

That 100% of the kids didn’t say that alcohol or drugs weren’t available. No college party in history has been alcohol free. That doesn’t mean that everyone is drinking but it was DEFINITELY available and the people who say it wasn’t weren’t looking hard enough.

Kids get high & kids get drunk

It’s college and that’s what they do. (I know I did.) So why hold athletes to a different standard?

Kids

Are starting to smoke weed a lot in 7th and 8th grade so it is really not that shocking at all.

by MurlandTerps on Jan 31, 2012 9:06 PM EST reply actions

Uhh this should be 100% available unless...

it’s a christian school or the recruit gets stuck with someone who doesn’t go out at all which is maybe 1 or 2 kids on a team

I was referring more to the drugs portion

I’d have to be on another planet to think a freshman in college isn’t going to go out drinking, those were some of my fondest memories lol

I think the question is somewhat misleading...

It asks whether “alcohol OR drugs were available”. There is a HUGE difference between a glass of beer being available and lines of cocaine being available. Alcohol could be available and still be 100% legal for many, many college students. If the question was “were drugs available?” that would be another story. I’m surprised it wasn’t 100%. Nobody on this board can honestly say that they couldn’t find a beer on a college campus when they were there.

59.1% said no?

That’s clearly a lie. I guess they just don’t understand the concept of anonymity…
