Prisbell writes about Shaq

and its actually positive. ive just become so accustomed to prisbell/yanda writing pieces about the terps that are negative. this is a really interesting article about cleare, where he came from, how he became a star. also discusses the shadier side of recruiting, including everyones favorite arizona / miller. love the love he had for gary and for turegeon

It really is a fantastic article.

I love the image of Shaq and the coaches sitting down for crabcakes in Comcast. And Shaq’s words about both Gary and Turgeon make me proud to be a Terp.

agreed - feels good to have Shaq

on our side.

We’re gonna love him – It’s time once again:

For his brother man? Shaq, can you dig it?”

I think we'll like this kid...

Cleare sought authenticity from his prospective college coach. He wanted to play for Gary Williams at Maryland. But one afternoon last May, Cleare sat in school with tears streaming down his cheeks. His favorite college coach had retired. It was the lowest Harvey had seen Cleare. And the sadness did not subside when Cleare watched the news conference in the days that followed.

But then came a surprise. Maryland hired Cleare’s second-favorite coach: Mark Turgeon, who had recruited Cleare while at Texas A&M.

These are the kind of kids I want wearing Terrapins jerseys

Good for Shaq for making it this far. I’m excited to see what he can do next year.

Great read

He seems like a great kid. Can’t wait to see him in a Terps uniform!

by terpfan92 on Jan 30, 2012 10:50 PM EST reply actions

That story is inspiring

but it only makes it better that he is a BEAST of a player. Just an absolute animal in the paint, a good passer, has a little jump shot and will be the strongest player on the court every game he plays until he is in the NBA facing Howard Lebron and Blake

by terps3030 on Jan 30, 2012 10:56 PM EST reply actions

I think

I might have a new favorite player early next year…

And it just reaffirms everything we’ve been feeling about Turgeon.

by turtlepower on Jan 30, 2012 11:37 PM EST reply actions

Papa Harrison sounds like he has the same type of values and grounding

His boys sure would look good next to Shaq on the court! Stogs, Len, Cleare, Harrison twins…it’s enough to make me giggle.

Please, just say no to Paypal Cal and the armada of Escalades. Honor, dignity, pride. Stronger than $ and rimz will ever be.

Was thinking the same thing about Papa Harrison...

…Shaq seems like a quality kid AND a good basketball player!!!

Wow

That’s an excellent piece. And from Prisbell nonetheless. Shaq’s gonna be an easy one to root for.

by Ben Goldstein on Jan 31, 2012 12:15 AM EST reply actions

If we make the tourney next year I can guarantee you this will be on outside the lines

It is a perfect story for them and it has a happy ending. Shaq trumps all obstacles in order to bring the Terps back to the post season. I can see it now

UCLA who?

Says a lot about Turge

and the type of kid – as well as the type of program – we want at UMD.

by WherestheBison on Jan 31, 2012 7:43 AM EST reply actions

kudos

Kudos to Prisbell for a story well written. Kudos to Harvey for doing right by the kid and laying a great foundation for him to develop into a good man. Any Hollywood producers out there? this will be a great movie with the ending showing Maryland cutting down the nets. It already gives me chills.

More comments on this fanpost

than on the actual Wapo article.

Its hard not to get excited about next season with the massive injection of talented size Shaq and Layman bring. The only question I have is whether he is a legit 6’9" or not. I am sure he can win at the college level with his drive and work ethic with good coaching. I hope he has the skills – a la Ben Wallace – to be a force in the pros as well since he’s not a 7-footer.

Hugh - "Hugh" surprised?

WaPo is a bone yard for most articles – this is the only place to truly discuss Terps sports! ha ha ha

I bet you love this site compared to the incessant jousting that would veer off topic on the WaPo site.

I actually enjoyed the sniping amongst the regulars on Wapo

It was fairly intelligent and informed. TI was my favorite board until fairly recently due to its familiarity. we’ve shared a ton of stories from the college days across the decades.

However the coverage of the Terps at Wapo is spotty at best, and the reporters there do not hold a candle to Ben, Ben & Dave. Seriously.

I ddin't know you had

long standing with TI. I’ve seen some decent discussions, but also some like the deleted flame out today.

Great article... great kid

Says a lot for Gary and Turge… Can’t wait to see him in Gold against Duke

by REDMAN on Jan 31, 2012 8:32 AM EST reply actions

The only thing that should surprise us

about this article is that it has a positive slant from Eric Prisbell. Hasn’t Turgeon said from day 1 that he wnats young men of a certain character and that he would recruit to simply have bodies?

by FHFAN on Jan 31, 2012 9:01 AM EST reply actions

Wow .... that is a great article

Kudos to Gary for making the initial efforts and being the “real” guy he is, and to Turge as well. Def the kind of coaches & kids we can be proud of.

H/T to TerpPride and WompWomp

pulled Prisbell’s continuing story on ShaQ:

TerpPride: Follow up to the Cleare WaPo article
Prisbell posted extra thoughts not included in the original article. Worth a read.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/terrapins-insider/post/more-on-maryland-prospect-shaquille-cleare/2012/01/31/gIQAZSIveQ_blog.html?wprss=terrapins-insider

WompWomp: Jeez. There’s ANOTHER story from Prisbell from Shaq
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/terrapins-insider/post/high-school-coach-on-shaq-cleare-he-has-turned-into-a-beast-he-is-a-beast/2012/01/31/gIQAA5QxeQ_blog.html#pagebreak

He’s milking this cow for all it’s worth, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

Thanks Guys. This quote floors me even though I’ve read all Shaq material that’s posted here…Read THIS.

Prisbell: “One of the things that jumped out to me about Shaq’s personality was how grounded and humble he is. Over the last 15 years, I have dealt with most of the top so-called high school basketball phenoms in the country. Few appeared to have more of a sense of focus and less of an ego than Shaq. He knows where he has come from and where he wants to go. He appears to lack a sense of entitlement that you’ll find in some top players who have been flown around the country on shoe company money and looked at their national rankings in publications since they were 10 or 12. Shaq didn’t take that route, of course, because he grew up in the Bahamas and hardly played organized basketball, much less excel in it, when he first came here for the ninth grade.”

HOLY S Batman! We have a gem in the making!

AND

His HS Coach:

"He is stronger than any high school basketball player I have ever met," Harvey said. "He works harder than any player I know. If we have no practice on a Saturday, he will lift first and then go running — every time. He has turned into a beast. He is a beast."

Drooling over his potential.

My kind of Terp. Dust off a spot in the rafters next to the General, looks like we may be adding a couple more with Stogs and Shaq.

I want to see Plumlee(s) move Shaq

out of his spot once he posts up down low!

by bball purist on Jan 31, 2012 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

I will actually laugh out loud at the game

when one of those soft ass plumlees tries to back down shaq. That shit is comical. Shaq and Len are going to work SOOO well together. Shaq as the immovable object where players will have to try and move around him then Len will come and swat their weak ass shot, shaq will grab the ball, outlet pass to allen who lobs it up for a Len ally oop

by terps3030 on Jan 31, 2012 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

The only reason it’s a positive article about Maryland basketball is because Gary is gone. I thought that would be obvious to everyone, but I guess not.

by Go Maryland on Jan 31, 2012 9:11 PM EST reply actions

First I'll respond to how ignorant this is, then I'll post what I was going to say.

Gary had Shaq in the bag and had three solid years of recruiting done. So to say anything negative about Gary in this thread is just absolutely asinine.

by NY Terp on Jan 31, 2012 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

think you missed the point there

I don’t think the comment was a slam against GW. Prisbell never had anything good to say about us and particilarly Gary. I think that’s what is being referenced.

by LeftCoastTerp on Jan 31, 2012 11:51 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

Yeah, the comment pissed me off at first

but then I was like, this a dig at the Wapo, so it’s cool.

by 1 proud terp on Feb 1, 2012 7:35 AM EST up reply actions

I just want to say....

How pleased I am with the level of character Turge is recruiting. Shaq, Allen, and Layman are about the best kids you could get (character-wise) and they are all going to be flat out ballers.

I will be proud to have them representing us.

Fear the Turgle!
