Greenberg takes a shot at Stogs?
From Don Markus's piece at the Baltimore Sun:
"Stoglin, he plays for both teams," Greenberg said after Stoglin scored 28 points on 9 of 21 shooting. "The guy made tough, tough shots, but he also [took] some shots that gave us a chance to get back in the game. But when he’s making those tough shots, especially the guarded ones, you hope that’s your chance to win the game.”
It's one thing for a coach to call out his own players in the media, but to take a shot (ok, perhaps a backhanded compliment) at an opposing player shows a lack of class on Greenberg's behalf. I know he's biased against UMD due to the student section and their "choice" use of words (especially when Delaney was at Va Tech), but a coach should always be above that.
As far as Stogs is concerned, EVERY team in the ACC has a roster spot available for Stoglin. Yes, he's a volume scorer. Yes, he's out of control sometimes. Yes, of course, he's selfish with the ball. But, the kid is relentless and you just can't teach a player how to get to the rim, draw contact, and flat out score the way Stoglin can. It's an innate ability. I can't wait until he's a junior/senior and he's had the chance to mature a bit.

Eh
He’s right. Was asked a question and answered it. Nothing more. Hell, most of the time I wish Stogs would pass the ball.

no way is he within his bounds to say that
greenberg is the rex ryan of basketball and this shot is over the line. he talks as much trash as his players and its disgusting

Really?
Have you watched this team play this year? Who would you like Stoglin to pass the ball to? He scored 21 in the second half on 12 shots. However, I have no problem with what Greenberg said. They lost, sucks for him. Stogs > Delaney ever was.
You don’t have to answer a question by taking a shot.

No Problem
No problem with what he said. Maybe I’m alone.

Seth told it like he saw it
And I agree with him. Stogs has to mature with his shot. He has way too many out of control possessions and gives the other team a chance to catch up with every miss. Our teamwork and bball IQ needs help.

yeah, but he only said it because his team lost and he was frustrated
i hope we face them in the acc tournament so stoglin can send greenberg home
He's right but...
coaches don’t talk like that about players not on their roster. No one else in the ACC would say that. There just isn’t any upside to making statements like that.

Greenberg is just bitter his team can't win anything....
It also seems like a “No shit” comment.
Obviously any player that carries the scoring load for their team will shoot their team in and out of games
…I don’t understand why he singles out Stoglin when I’m sure he’s played plenty of teams that have a player this is the case for…
We won and they lost.
Have fun at the bottom of the acc Seth

whatever
Obviously he’s mad VTech lost but he’s a douche bag! He would love to have the leading scorer in the league on his team.
Stupid thing for an opposing coach to say
Fair game for a fan but not an opposing coach
Seth Greenberg, he's the kind of coach that plays for both teams
the guy makes some dumb decisions, and you know, with those decisions, you just hope they let your team win the game.
The CAA is your future Greenberg.

Greenberg seat is very hot right now
I would not be surprised if he gets the ax this year.
Something similar was said about Vasquez once upon a time.
I think it was one of the ACC television commentators, but he said that Vasquez was the best playing on the court, for both teams, and he was right (at that time). And for certain games this year, I’d say the exact same thing about Stoglin too.
I don’t consider it a slam necessarily, more along the lines of the current harsh reality, but I think (or hope) that like Vasquez, Stoglin will improve with time.
+1
But every good team has to have a GV or Stoglin to be fun to watch. And when they’re hot, we win!!

If it wasn't for his 2 smoking hot daugthers, Greenberg would have accomplished nothing
in this life. Try making the tourney once and winning more than 1 game in the ACC before you open your fat mouth. It’s too bad he won’t be around next year for Stogs to make him regret those words.

Seth Greenberg saying Stoglin plays for both teams
Is like saying VT is a final four contender. Greenberg needs to realize that he has made the tournament once in his 7 years at VT with an overall losing record in the ACC
Good bye
Good bye Greenberg, good bye Greenberg, good bye Greenberg we hate to see you go. Seriously we hate to see it, with you there Va Tech was almost always a penciled W.
Watch out VT
Take a lesson from Debbie Yow and do not diss anyone from MD cause we will make you play year after year.
I thought it was odd...
…. when I first saw he said that and wondered why no one brought it up earlier. He was definitely out of line with that comment. He’s such a whiner and will have another excuse this year as to why his team failed to make the tourney yet again. I too think Stoglin should pass more, but as someone else noted, he has to be able to have bigs to pass it to who can finish. He had a sweet dish very early in the VT game to Pankey (I believe) but the guy missed the layup and Stogs didn’t get credit for the assist. I had a couple idiot VT fans sitting behind me at the game and luckily the Terps were winning all day and they had little to cheer about.. They kept calling Stogs a ballhog, but they shut upa bit when he killed them with back to back 3’s when the lead was down to 6.
I just think
it’s poor taste to talk about an OPPOSING player to the media. Talking about your own guy and saying you’re disappointed is one thing, but to take a shot at an opposing player is just lame imo.
Can you blame him?
It’s obvious he hates UMD and he knows it’s not going to get any easier in the coming years to beat the Terps…if he’s even still the coach at VT. He’s a douche but he’s not dumb. He’s sees what direction our program is going. False hope of becoming upper echelon ACC program for them is fading, and Seth’s window is closing.
Ever since...
Greenberg pretty much looked directly at me and yelled “GO THE F HOME!” to the student section after they won a close game against us a few years back, I have had zero respect for him
by bloodwatermission on Jan 31, 2012 12:12 AM EST reply actions
Mostly he plays for the Terps
Stoglin loves to shoot but who would you rather take the shot. Without Stogs the Terps are in the same boat with VT and BC. Greenberg will eat his words if he keeps his job but more likely he is out of there. I hope Stogs gets another shot at him in the ACC Tournament. VT needs a player of Stogs caliber but does not have one for now. Too bad for Greenberg.
Problem is when Stogs passes, we can't finish
He misses out on lots of assists because when he passes to Padge or Pankey or Len or almost anyone else, they miss layups, fumble the ball, miss jump shots etc. That’s why I think he gets frustrated and starts taking more shots.
But yes Seth is a dick.
GO TERPS!!
Greenberg also plays for both teams
Like calling your last timeout with 2 minutes left when your team is making a comeback..could’ve used a TO down the stretch there, right Seth?
He’ll be fired before he ever makes a tournament.
Possible motivation?
Ok, so it really seems like we all agree that he’s right, but these aren’t the kinds of things a coach should be saying in public. Now that he’s put that out there though, chances are that it’s already gotten back to Stogs.
Will this get in his head even more than just Turge or other coaches and players around him saying it? Could Seth have just shot himself and the rest of the ACC in the foot by giving Stogs just the motivation he needs to fix it?
Personally, I think the effort is already there, it’ll just take time. Stoglin’s shot selection is way better than it was at the beginning of the season and he’s had a few games where he’s looked to pass, but old habits die hard. There is some truth to the fact that sometimes it takes outside observation for us to admit our faults. This could help serve to hammer the point home. Thank you Seth, thank you. ;)
i like the fact that he DID say that...
no doubt turgeon is preaching that all the time to stoglin and it is really really, REALLY slowly getting through. sometimes the words of someone outside of your circle are the ones that you listen to most. stoglin is much better than earlier in the year because he isn’t gassed for playing all-everything when they had no bench.
but win or lose, greenburg’s not saying anything new.
Get back to me Seth
when you coach a game on Saturday or Sunday in March.
