This should shed some light on how ridiculous recruiting services are and putting the spotlight on teenagers. Ever since recruiting services have became mainstream in the early 2000's high school football and basketball players have been the focus of many fanbases and receiving both positive and negative attention from mostly adults that are part of those fanbases. All a recruiting service does is pretty much showcase what has been going on for many years prior to there existance which is showing who a college recruit is considering as possible suitors for their services as a college athlete. Not to mention these services profit mad money from exploiting these teenage recruits. I for one have never paid money to become a premium member of one of these services for many reasons, this being one.
Yahoo had a story, sourcing Rivals, that the top safety recruit Shaq Thompson shortened his list to his top 3, Cal, USC and Washington. After a premium site posted his top three, Shaq s personal Twitter account started blowing up with backlash that USC was being mentioned and calling him out that he was simply listing them and had no ambition to attend USC. So what does Shaq do, report to Rivals that he is eliminating USC and his top 2 are Cal and Washington.
This proves my point about recruiting services. These services simply exploit teenagers to list potential college teams so they can sell this information to the general public and get fanbases excited about a top recruit considering there school as a potential choice . More times then not, these recruits have there mind set on a school maybe two, but since that would sell many services recruits now go from top 10 to top 7 to top 5 to top 3 and then there is decision day. Recruits know from when they first start getting interest where they would like to play, its just a matter of time before they get that offer or if they ever get it.
Coming full circle. I hate when people comment on posts that the Terps are in a players top 3/5/7/10/1,000,000 because it doesn't mean shit. The Shaq Thompson story should be an eye opener for all of us fans out there, that a player may simply list a school to give them attention or make a fanbase feel happy. Take Stefon Diggs for instance. Diggs listed us in his top 7, hours later eliminated us and replaced us with VA. Tech. Now, I heard we are being listed again. If you honestly think he is going to Maryland your crazy, unless he is like Torian Graham and has no clue what he wants. So Maryland get's listed in a recruits top whatever, don't get excited because its a simple tactic to get us excited only to be let down. We should truthfully know who is sincerely considering the Terps.
Broman and Co. do a great job on filling us in on who the Terps have a legitimate shot at getting. Also, just because a recruit "verbally" commits doesn't mean everything either. So when a player suits up for the Terps and actually stays and plays for Randy for more then a year, (sorry I had to do it as a joke for all the Randy haters out there) then I know they are a Terp! Otherwise send me your money as you would to Rivals, ESPN and others and I will tell you at the end of recruiting who is a Terp and who is not. Or just keep posting the recruiting updates on here and I will love that as well.
