Turge Feelings/First Post
As a terp freshman who was dying to get immersed into the sports community, I found this blog about a month ago and have read it religiously ever since. I finally decided to get an account yesterday rather than be a stalker from afar, so here I am. Hi Terrapin Nation!
Anyway, I guess I just wanted to share a nice little experience I had at the VT game yesterday that cemented how I feel about Turgeon. Growing up in Maryland, I was obviously quite familiar with what Gary was like. And while nobody will ever be the same as Gary, it feels to me like Turgeon is equally as genuinely passionate for his school, players, and fan base. After the game yesterday, I saw Turge standing around while Stoglin was being interviewed by the ACC network, and I was pretty close, so I yelled "Yeah Turgeon!" and he responded by smiling, turning, pointing at me, and fist pumping to the delight of a few friends and other students around me. I know it wasn't much, but it corroborated the entire attitude he's had so far in the program, between his praise for the fan base upon taking the job and his brutal honesty in interviews. With a lot of prospects on the horizon, I can gladly say that I look forward to spending the next four years with Mark and hopefully seeing a top program by my senior year.

Welcome and glad you joined
Side note: our win against ND just became better, as they upset another ranked opponent in UCONN.
Thanks for sharing
Turge is the man- I think it becomes more clear every day the we got the perfect guy for the job.
welcome to TT and thats awesome
im really jealous, i wish i could be a student another 3 years to watch this program rise again
Lets gooo Maryland
When a UMD coach fists pumps at you, you know he's legit!
Glad to see current students feeling the same pride in Turge that I had in Gary when I was there over a decade ago. Can’t wait until Turge gets us back deep into the tourney, then all students will be putty in his hands. The future is indeed bright, my friend.
Welcome to the club, turtlepower.
I know
the fist pump obviously reminded me of Gary in particular, and it wasn’t forced. My mom is a Terp alum and said when she went to games in the 90’s (not as a student), she always saw Gary have contact with the fans. So I thought it was cool to experience myself with a new coach.
Coach Turgeon is the best thing to happen to Maryland
since maybe the Natty. I’m not sure he will ever equal the HOFster’s Natty or run off 17 straight NCAA berths but I think he can have us in the top 20 for more consecutive weeks than the HOFster ever did . ( I am not sure what the HOFster’s record is for consecutive top 20 weeks and yes I know that is a bold prediction.)
It seems to me like the kids like playing for him as much as the fans like him which means we are going to probably recruit better than we ever have. Love me some Turgeon.
welcome aboard
I hope you saw the Charlotte Observer post from the Duke game. Just in case:

I like Mark Turgeon!
I’m a sophomore, and i remember at one of the games earlier this season Turgeon came to the student section and shook everyone’s hands. well as much as he could. It was about 2 hours before the game. And we talked a little bit and he seems like a really great guy. I’m excited to see where he takes this program, and he seems like he cares about the players more than just players, but like they are his own kids.
sidenote: i loved the part when the BS flagrant foul was called on mosley and the entire crowd just got riled up and started yelling (TURGEON< TURGEON!!!!) to take up for Mark lol. It was great to see the students and crowd have the coaches back against that BS casll lol.
I remember that too
those kind of things definitely endeared me to him, along with the succes of course.
And that call…sheesh. I actually thought Turgeon got the technical, but him getting fired up + the flagrant ended up being better for the Terps, probably. The crowd was finally energized.
That was about 75 minutes before the Illinois game, if I recall correctly. The best student fans are in their seats by that time :)
Yep, right before he went into the locker room. He told some of us to go check out the free stuff and that he “heard there was food somewhere”.

Welcome to the board turtlepower
I think your feelings about Turgeon are spot on. I think MD is fortunate to have him.
Welcome to Terp Nation
And you’re also going to hear from us old timers. I remember going down on the floor in 1970 to see Tom McMillen being interviewed and I yelled at Lefty who was watching Tom being interviewed. I gave him the thumbs up sign and he flashed back a left handed V sign to me and gave me a big smile and a wink. I’ve been hooked on Terp BBall ever since.
Turge gives me the same feeling.

Another Old Guy Memory
My friend and I were in Cole watching a Terp workout. Lefty’s assisatant – George Ravelling – came up in the stands, and sat with us for about 10 minutes – talking about the team – what we thought, how they were looking, what they were trying to do, etc.

great stuff
Ravelling no slouch of a head coach either. The simple little things make a huge impact on us fans at times. Great hearing these stories.
