oh fer
Neither the men nor the women have won at Gary Williams court. The women looked flat out awful collapsing against Virginia Tech last night. Were they jinxed by the lame dedication ceremony from the previous night or is something missing from this team. Without Alyssa Thomas on the court the Lady Terps seemed lacking in intensity. The game reminded me of the loss to FSU the year the men went to the final four. All the air seemed out of the Comcast Center but because it wasn't the same type of crowd that goes to mens game the Ladies weren't booed off the court.

I missed the game last night
because I had to work until almost 9:00 pm. But from what I could tell from the stats and from reading the post game recaps, etc. last night’s performace was part of a trend with this team that’s been developing for a while. The seem to have peaked for the game at FSU and with te exception of a 10 minute stretch in the second half against a seriously overmatched Wake Forest team haven’t played particularly well even in their wins. They seem to have lost some of their early season intensity. Giving up 75 point to a VT team that hadn’t broken 50 in its last 5 games is will nigh inexcusable in terms of defensive effort. Couple that with 20 turnovers and a mere +1 rebounding margin and it looks to me like the team approached last night’s game with a very high reading on the apathy meter. If they aspire to a deep NCAA run, they should whip VT at home even without Alyssa Thomas.
We can oly hope that they will find a way to regain the early season intensity.
BTW – I don’t think the court is cursed.
Out rebounded in the second half
It was a strange game. There were elements of a jinx (some of the 20 turnovers were caused when players slipped on the floor) and there elements of a lack of focus. Teller was taking all the big shots for Virginia Tech in the second. There was an out of bounds play with 5 seconds left on the shot clock and Teller was wide open under the basket. Had did that happen?
The men's team was NEVER booed of the court
We were booing the shitty officiating that took place near the end of the first half.
Yes they were...
…in the FSU game in 2001, which is what the slug was referring to.
She sprained her thumb in practice
I kinda think she may have been able to play (at least limited), but since they were playing a weak team and are off for a week now they thought it wouldn’t hurt to rest her to be cautious. But that’s just my theory. I heard earlier yesterday they weren’t sure if she’d play or not, which makes me think that since there was a chance if it were a game against Duke or Miami she would’ve played through it. I’m sure it wasn’t her decision though.
yep
win the war, lost the battle – thought they could win w/o her, but at least the risk of further damage (ligament, etc.) was avoided.

For that 2001 FSU game ...
Yes, there was booing, and based on the talent and capabilities of that team, a little tough love was warranted.
One of the best lines/jokes ever came from that game. The guys who sat behind me & my buddies were pretty sharp on b-ball, and pretty funny too. I think AFTER the FSU loss, we beat Wake (their stud, Howard, pulled a Chris Webber, if I have my history correct…); Anyway, we won the next home game and it happened that Brian Billick, then Ravens HC, did a pre-game speech. We played with much more intensity in this game. Once we had won, the guy behind us says out loud to several of us: “So, based on the improved play after a speech from Billick, who gave the pre-game speech for the FSU game, Norv Turner?”
the howard game
was in the year of teh Natty. the FSU game was the final four year.
after the game drew nicholas and juan dixon were so upset they shot jumpers until 3 am. that was the catalyst that launched two final fours and a natty.
one could argue the booing worked.

Didn't Danny Miller transfer
One could argue that the booing had at least some unintended side effects
Gary used it to rally the guys
into an us (the staff and team, don’t even count on 1/2 the fans) vs. them mentality. Of course it worked, and the rest was history. We obviously didn’t entirely know at that point that this team had the right stuff for 2 Final Fours. But did they ever.

Most of the women's team
was probably at the Duke game the night before. Then when they looked around last night and could hear a pin drop they lost a little enthusiasm and got beat. That’s my theory
You'd actually be surprised
The ladies have a nice fan base. Big games/moments, it gets pretty loud in there. Obviously nothing like Duke/big men’s game levels, but it is never quiet. Last night the fans got into it towards the end when VT took the lead. Perhaps too late, but they were expecting a blow out. Last time I checked there’s been lots of discussions on here of the men’s games crowds not being loud enough, and games against lesser opponents have shown that. It’s no different with the womens’ crowd (in terms of being louder for the bigger games).
The Women
Even though I followed the Miami game over gametracker it disturbed me more than last night did. Last night was a horror show ( The 5 second count on the inbounds. The number of times that somebody from Va Tech was alone under the basket.) AT is so good I think that the team relies on her too much. I am scoring last night as a lesson learned.
Yeah
I am hoping it was a wake-up call. Maybe they needed it…something has seemed off for most of ACC play. They need to grow from this and use it as motivation to never feel this way again. As for AT, I agree, she’s relied on a lot. This team can be streaky offensively, and I feel like whenever the offense starts to struggle or they fall behind AT goes on a run all by herself. She’s also scored 15-20 points in just one half on several occasions this season. Without her they lose that capability, though a couple others have shown flashes of it.
Lady Terps in a mini mid-season slump
They’ll come out of it soon and kick butt as they did at the beginning of the season.
