Connection to COLE
I watched Gary give his final fist pump last night from my seats at Comcast (ya, i cried, not ashamed to admit it). Gary was the conduit back to the cole days, and his success built Comcast. As a recent grad, I have noticed that the younger kids(especially those who weren't there for the GV days) are disconnected from the team and have a lack of care overall for the program and its history. As a way to honor our past and at the same time get kids pumped up, we really need to move maryland madness or the exhibition game to COLE. When I was a student, kids on the SGA said that renting a hardwood for the night was too expensive or logistically too difficult. However, if we can waste thousands of dollars for CUPCAKES ON MARYLAND DAY, we can surely put something together at Cole. I think Turge would be down, and we as fans and alumni should heavily petition for this. Puke has two exhibition games most years, why can't one of ours be free, and at COLE, maybe with a concert or other event on the same day to get kids pumped(or just move maryland madness there.) I am from New York and never attended a game at Cole when I was a teen, however I often found myself studying in the stands before finals, just cause the history of the place gave me goosebumps and I just loved being in the building. Lets remind the current students how special our history is, and give them a great opportunity to get pumped before basketball season. We really should petition for this. Just trying to get a feel from everyone if this is worth campaigning for.

NC State
plays a game or two in Reynolds every year, I think it’s a good idea, if the cost isn’t prohibitive.
I agree that we should do this. I have pitched the idea to friends before and think it would be a good way to get people out to the exhibition game or an early out of conference game. However I was told that athletics no longer owns cole field house. Just as the university has to rent Comcast for graduation, athletics would have to rent Cole from campus recreations to use it. Doesn’t make sense but it seems like the cost of everything is what’s holding this back.

Won't happen...
Cole would need some serious repairs to make muster with fire standard codes.
I hate to say it, but the building needs to be torn down. It’s space that the university needs. It’s a very large stadium, that isn’t used for the most part.

Transform it into a purple line station! It would be awesome if the name of the UMD Central stop was “Cole Field House”

Fire codes are almost definitely not an issue.
Keep in mind that the place still holds audiences of thousands of people several times per year for graduations, concerts, etc. I doubt that the university continues using the building when there would be the risk of such heavy fines if they weren’t compliant.
This
Fire codes are not an issue, as the building is a venue for other activities that host thousands.
The only issue that has breen brought up is the cost to “rent” a hardwood floor to put in, since student activities changed the venue to an indoor soccer court for intramural sports.
This whole cost to rent the stadium from student activities is complete bs in my opinion, just because it is in another department does not mean that student activities has to charge a fee for the athletic dept to use it. They can just say “yes, you can use it on x date for this event at no charge.” The federal government use to charge other departments to use contracts and that practice has largely stopped because somebody had the bright idea that it is all one government in the end so why charge internally to use things.
I’m all for playing an exhibition game there, or perhaps playing a marquee out of conference game there
They use a Cole a lot more than you think

firecode
What repairs are you talking about? I know there are enough exits. The lighting still works. I’m hardpressed to find what would need to be done to host a one time event? Open to objections tho.
Whatever the case...
with modern fire code standards, I know these things were to be addressed if Cole were to be renovated (instead of building Comcast) and they weren’t addressed.
Cole was a great atmosphere for big games. It was great for it’s time. But those bathrooms are horrible and it is an outdated facility.
Unfortunately, a world in which schools can afford to have muiliple basketball stadiums doesn’t exist. They should tear it down and use the space for things that benefit the school and students.
Children should be seen and not heard.

not an issue
There are things that can be improved upon, but the building meets fire codes as they hold other events there. It is the cost to rent that is the issue.
I would love this idea, but I don’t think the University would do it.
Sweet Memories
I go way back – enrolled in 1970. There was no place like Cole when it was rocking. It was absolutely impossible to communicate with the person next to you – too f@$ing loud. If there is film somewherre, you have to see Brad Davis, John Lucas, and Mo Howard on a three man break – has never been done better. Sweet, sweet memories.

Agree
Brad Davis, master of the fake behind-the-back pass. One of MD’s best PGs ever.
Suggestion to Ben...
…best Maryland players ever at each position. Is Brad Davis better than John Lucas or Steve Blake, etc…maybe after the season is over when things slow down a bit.
Davis better than Blake...
…but not Lucas.
Lucas was a three time All American.

fire codes
I have had classes in Cole so I would assume it is up to code…
There have been concerts/ events with up to 8000. It’s definitely still suitable for events, but it doesn’t have the facilities for a college basketball game- I’m pretty sure there’s only one full-service locker room and it’s pretty small.
Madness is the most realistic option, but, oh yeah… there’s no basketball floor! People bought all the pieces.
pssssss
lots of floor left …. in some warehouse. Find a way to get athletics to free up the floor #OccupyCole #FreeColeHardwoodFloor lmao

I loved Cole so much, I named my son Cole ...
The short answer unfortunately, is, it’s all about the money; All you need to do is look at Duke/Cameron…; More to topic though, Cole was special. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to some other venues, and between personal experiences and talking wit ha lot of fans who have been to a lot of other venues, Cole was always near the top.
My 2 favorite things:
1- walking in the press entrance on the back side. This was ground level, and you walked right by the locker room entrances; if you took a client or your kid in this way and took a slow stroll, you’d see the players, coaches, celebs … and then walk into the floor area … it was awesome for soaking in the whole ambiance.
2- the upper circle allowed you to walk around the entire building and never miss a play, and to also see everyone else you were looking for; much like the 2nd level at RFK, it was a social aspect as much as anything else, but it maintained the "family’ feel too.
COMCAST is nice, but it’s a sell out for the big bucks.

Comcast is nice, but I loved Cole
Lots of great memories there. When I was a kid growing up in CP (I’ll be 50 in April), I recall you could sneak under the rails to get down onto the floor, and then sit right down on the letters on the baseline. We’d hand the ball up to the players or ref for an inbound play right in front of us. That’s before they sold all courtside seats for big bucks at Comcast. We’d wait until a blowout was winding down and walk behind the MD bench and ask guys for their wristbands (all the cool guys wore them back in the day). We’d play outdoors the next day with our buddies wearing the wristbands we got from Brad Davis or some other idol of ours. So frickin cool. Anybody remember swimming at the indoor pool they had there? They had bars below the waterline separating the shallow area from main pool and I almost got stuck once…..

Took a swimming course at Cole
the 1st semester it went coed. Before that, women weren’t allowed in and the only attire permitted in the swimming courses was your birthday suit. The first day of the course, 3 guys came running up from the locker room totally naked and jumped in the pool. No big deal except there were 7 or 8 women in or around the pool at the time, and one was the object of affection by our swimming instructor. He ripped them a new one, made them wrap up in towels and head back to the locker room.

Anyone Remember?
Waiting in line for Duke tickets inside Cole Field House. They actually let us in and we surrounded the concourse. Spent the night in there for tickets or at least that was the plan. I believe the line was so long that they started giving them out around 3am. I remember sneaking out the back door to go out to bring pizza back to my crew.
On another occasion, maybe even for the same game, we got in line for the Duke game at 10am. They let a select few of us(the group of us waiting outside), maybe 50, inside of Cole in the small area where you went in with your student tickets and re-locked the door… sort of on the right side… im sure everyone remembers that spot. Around 1pm non other than you know who showed up with like 20 pizzas. You guessed it Gary Williams! Im going to say it was either the 98-99 or 99-00 season. I was at Maryland from 1995-2000, but then lived in Laurel from 2000-2003. So needless to say, I was at alot of the games during the 00-01 and 01-02 season. I was able to get student tickets from friends and my student ID didnt have a year or anything on it. Nothing was scanned back then. It was easy.

Camping out for for tickets and getting in Cole in 1984-1985 ...
We spent 24+ hours both waiting for tickets and also the day/nigh before the Notre Dame, UVA, UNC games. The Notre Dame game was on national TV, and me & my roomie raced in, got behind the ND bench, and we screamed “DIGGER …. DIGGER …DIGGER” pretty much the entire time the ball was in possession. People told us we were on the tv shots all game, red faced and white-eyed … and we lost in last minute. Pretty sure Kelly Tripuka nailed a shot; We also lost to UNC that year when Al Wood was their stud. The students chanted “Dont F*ck with Buck” before the games …. oh yeah …. good times …

back in the 80s a friend worked at the ticket office – never had to wait in line for sh!t and got to go to any of the games I wanted. Loved the concourse for running laps as well in the dead of winter. Had too many finals in Cole to keep track of with those wierd desky thinks that hook on the back of the seat in front of you.
Thx; my dates might be off since that was earlier in my 5 year college career...;
I’m sure Al Woods was 81 or 82, and then Ralph Sampson vs Buck would have been a little earlier too
yep - Ralph was 81-83
Wood was 79-82. You were able to watch some outstanding players in that timeframe

OK, to fill you guys in on some perspective.....
When I first started attending MD in 1985 the atmosphere was crazy. Not for the sports teams, but the school itself. People came to MD because it was known as a top 10 party school. On warm days you were lucky if half the class showed for lectures. On those same days you could find 5-6,000 people at “Byrd Beach” “studying”. I was one of them, studying the hot girls in bathing suits who were also “studying”.
Things began to change rapidly. The administration began increasing admission standards to try and move us away from Party School status. Enrollment went down, tuition went up, and the fun meter started plunging. I can remember King Tom speaking at half time of an unimportant game and the students rushing the field and tearing down the goalposts after the game. I don’t even think we won!
I remember being in Byrd with a girl one night, only to see 30 guys rushing some frat climb the goalposts, pull down their pants and moon the frat member that then took their pictures. Down they came for the next hazing ritual.
I remember sitting in the lobby of one of the halls talking to another girl as two guys came in streaking nude excusing themselves as they hurdled our couch, ran past the desk and down the steps out the back door.
As an RA, I remember Quad yells. On one night one of the girls screamed “Suck my tit!” Another RA looked at me, shrugged, and said “Show it!”, and she did.
At another unimportant football game, I turned to see someone climbing the bleachers behind me. He crawled between the rails and sat next to me winded. (Apparently just walking up the bleachers properly was too much trouble.) Turns out he was a kid I went to high school with. He offered me the vodka he had slipped into the game in his pants in a zip lock bag. Mixed great with the grape juice they sold at the concession stand, he said.
Thirteen years before me, the campus had a bar on campus! My sister had two naked guys on LSD come running into her room and jump out her window. Yeah, they died.
These were “normal” times for us. This stuff doesn’t happen anymore. You can’t expect book nerds to turn around and be crazy people full of character. The two don’t go together. MIT and Harvard are not known for their unruliness or for pushing the boundaries of social acceptability.
Hell, in 2002 while I was waiting to get in to watch the Natty off campus as an alumni, the police began setting up barriers. The kid next to me said loud enough for the cops to hear, “Look! They’re giving us ammunition!” “That’s the spirit!”, I thought to myself.
We are timid nerds now. That’s why we don’t show for the games. That’s why we leave games early. That’s why all we do is whine and blame others for our lack of support. Blame the coaches, blame the administration, blame everyone but ourselves. MD has lost its character.

At the same time I want to give the students a chance. Well have a great recruiting class coming in next year. I fully expect, not only the students, but everyone to go to the games.. well see.

I started in September 1983
when there was two bars in the Student Union and beer trucks showed up on Frat Row and the drinking age was beginning to creep up. Because DC was still 18, and MD was already at 19, we actually spent most of our freshman year partying in DC moreso than College Park. But MD has always HAD a ton of whiners…imported from NY/NJ (my gaw-ed, this state is sooo backwahds).
Watched the 2002 NC at Bentleys. Greatest moment in sports for me. Ever.

As an almost-20 year old from New York,
I have no actual connection, no basketball memories of Cole. Maryland basketball didn’t even get on my radar until I decided to come here. In fact the first MD game I watched (on TV) was the 2010 MD-Duke game. First time I was in Cole was on a visit the previous summer, when my family took refuge there during a rainstorm we got caught in, haha.
But seriously, when you know the history, just stepping inside and sitting in the seats gives you this feeling that I can’t exactly explain. It’s like even though I never experienced any of the history, there’s just this overwhelming feeling of importance and I like to try to imagine in my mind a packed house and just how loud and crazy it must’ve been. In short, I would absolutely love if somehow they could play a game in Cole Field House again. Or March Madness. Honestly though, I just plain feel lucky that I get to be on a campus with it for four years and can go in there whenever I want. It’s special.
one last Cole comment/moment
2002 season, Duke, Stevie Blake stealing the ball from “Jay” Williams at the end of the 1st half…; I had season tix in section N, and as Jayson W came across mid-court, he looked back at coach K, and Blake slithered up on him a few steps… and I looked at my nephew and tole him to keep an eye on Blake; Jay looks back a second time, Blake moves a few more quick little steps, and I tell my nephew, “one more look back and he’s gone ..” and then Blake has the ball and is off & running, make the lay up, and the place went freeking crazy. Should have had a +1 too. A lot of people say that is the best play/memory they had at Cole. All made better by the fact that those 2 were always at each others throats. Stevie and Juan had the fire in their bellies and never backed down. Go Terps!
agreed.
that was my favorite moment.. probably because that play caused the loudest celebration ive heard to this day. My ears were burning.. i thought my head was going to explode and the place was going to come crashing down. I had graduated in 2000.. but was still in the student section.. about 2 rows back center court. It was nuts!
I was usually section O
usually ranging from rows 2-15, end seats right in line with Terps bench

Yeah!! Yeah!!!
when Blake is yelling that after the play, I’m yelling it right with him, with a fist pump for good measure. When we get a few of these players w/ the passion, we’ll be kicking butt again.
Thank You
Honestly, thanks for all of your comments, listening to all your stories from back in the day are amazing. Makes you even prouder to be a Terp, if that is at all possible.
Here is a couple of photos many have seen

I was sitting right at end of row 5 in section O right behind Terps bench. Joe (in Security Staff – many students will remember him because the same security people worked the same section for every game – Joe did it for I’ll bet 20+ years…) was leaning over talking to us as the tip happened – it is so easy to pick his yellow jacket and him leaning over – loved those seats.

The guys were like Rock Stars in ’02 – even had me waiting for autographs after many games

I'm only 21, but I went to a fair share of games at Cole
When I was younger. I don’t remember any specific plays or moments or anything, but can still remember the crowd, the heat, the sightlines, etc. Nothing will ever top the feeling I would get hearing the band play “Rock and Roll Pt. 2” in Cole in the late 90s/early 2000s.
I would love to see another game in Cole, but the way UMD left Cole is almost too perfect to want to play another game there. I mean, how awesome is it that we can say the last season played in Cole, Maryland won its first NCAA Championship? I don’t know if I’d want to ruin that by playing a meaningless or even meaningful game there.
I remember watching the big screen at Cole
when Evel Knievel tried to jump Snake River Canyon. Several thousand sat watching the fiasco.

Man, I started watching some Len Bias videos.......
He was a BETTER Michael Jordan. I miss that guy.
If you went to MD during his time your heart sank on the news. One of the few times in my life I can tell you exactly where I was and what I was doing…….like the Challenger accident and 9-11.
Fear the Turgle!
On that note...
My 2nd and most memorable time seeing a game at Cole was the night of the Challenger accident. Bias was a Sr, and MD played Wake with Mugsy Bogues that night. Bias was on another level than anyone else on the floor….86 was a bad yr…aside from Haleys Comet, Challenger blows up and Bias dies….2 events, that as you said, you’ll never forget where you were when you got the news.
I feel deprived and jealous.......
My only experiences at Cole are walking over before a fb game and walking around the place. I wrote several months ago about converting it to an indoor football practice facility or a multi use building, They are building like crazy on the campus and I’m sure something can be done with the right minds at work.
Fantastic memories of Cole
I attended almost every Men’s BB game (and a bunch of women’s games) in Cole from ‘88-’92 unless I was back in NY for break. Getting there at 11am (2 hours before tip) on a weekend game day running for a courtside seat under the basket then reading the paper for an hour or so before warmups. A few things I’ll never forget:
1. Teyon McCoy’s 25 ft shot (a couple seconds after the buzzer) to send the Duke game to OT in ‘90. Duke eventually won 114-111 in OT, but our bench guys played valiantly vs. a stacked Duke team after Walt, Massenburg, Broadnax and McCoy among others all fouled out. There was no replay (obviously) and it was so loud that no one, including the refs heard the buzzer on McCoy’s shot. And subsequently the metal folding chairs behind the basket looked like a war zone, from the jumping students.
2. The tip-in by Walt Williams to beat Carolina at the buzzer (or so we thought) in ’92. The court was stormed 2×. Once after the tip-in (jumping over the press tables) and quickly cleared to put 1.3 back on the clock only to storm it again!
3. The women’s game vs. UVA in ‘92 was crazy. Promoted in week’s leading up to the game around campus, it was a sellout. Most unique atmosphere in a hoops game I have ever been a part of. The enthusiasm was nuts, everyone knew they were part of something special.
Of course there were many other memories, including the heat. Place will remain legendary to me.

ok humor me with one last quick memory...
One of my roommates was chosen to shoot for free tuition at halftime of a Wednesday night game vs. GTech. So layup, foul shot, 3 pointer and half court shot in 30 seconds. Since his father taught at the school, he already had a free education and all our other roommates were from Maryland, so being an out-of-stater, I had the most to gain. After showing the student ticket stub, they let me sit at center court, press row towards the end of 1st half. Plenty close enough to heckle Kenny Anderson. Btw, Dennis Scott hit about 8-9 shots in a row between the 3 pt line and half court during warmups that night.
They would not let me even touch the ball before attempting, soooo freaking nervous in front of 14,500. Shoot the layup, misses the entire rim off the backboard but I catch it on the other side and lay it in. I made the first free throw then missed probably 8 3’s in a row. As time was running down, I try my last 3 (which also missed) and was running back to half court. A bank-swish from the jump circle! To hear the roar of the crowd was really cool. Just threw my hands up like “oh well, couldn’t make ONE freaking 3!”
Great stories
A few years later, I remember a student winning a Toyota with the 3 point shots all around the arc in 5 spots. That contest ended that year – lol
That half court shot was obviously always the tough one. The nerves got you, but you made the biggest one!

So many memories of Cole.
Back in the Summer of ‘95 I was asked to be a coach/counselor at Gary’s basketball camp since Matt Raydo had been suspended for gambling and they needed a last minute replacement coach/counselor. It got me access to parts of Cole I wouldn’t have otherwise seen. The locker room seemed oddly average. Maybe my adulation and worship of Terps Bball made me envision something much more grand, but I recall being underwhelmed. The weight room was worse. I remember my high school having a comparable, if not better, weight room. The side/back gym was ancient as well. Just a small gym with bad wooden floors. My favorite part of the experience had to be playing pick up ball after the camp was done for the day. Running the court at Cole with the likes of Mario Lucas, Johnny Rhodes, Laron Profit, Duane Simpkins – it was great.
