Game tips at 9:00, but the Gary ceremony begins around 8:40ish. If you're wondering if you can see it on TV: Louisville-Villanova is on ESPN before the Maryland game, but I've been told the ESPN3 link will go live a half-hour before the game starts. So that may be where you can see it.
Anyway, game is on ESPN on the real 'tube, at least once Nova and the Ville finish things up. TV crew is Dan Shulman and Bobby Knight, and I literally couldn't have asked for a better combo, short of Uncle Verne somehow working his way in there.
Random, Baseless Prediction: Nick Faust goes 2-3 from beyond the arc, but the one that misses gets stuck between the rim and backboard. I don't believe we have a name for that.
Prediction: Like I said earlier, Duke will win this game. But we're a Maryland sports blog and this is basically our Super Bowl - not just because it's home against Duke, but because it's Gary's game. So I'm calling for the epic upset win.

I can’t vouch for the validity because I’ve never had any interaction with this person before, but if he can be believed, we might be in for a surprise in the uniform category.
Again, heavy emphasis on the uncertainty of it and for all I know it’ll just be usual, but I figured I’d pass it along. If they’re just regular unis, don’t bring out the lynch mob.

I’ve been bumping some Wale pre-game (on shuffle). The sequence went from W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E. to Nike Boots to Black ‘N’ Gold Remix to DC or Nothing. Basically from good Wale to suck Wale in a nice little negative slope

Sean Mosley will be the best player on the floor for MD tonight. I think with Sean basically being the last “Gary guy” on UMD (I know that pretty much everyone was either recruited or played for Gary on this team, but Sean played for him for 3 years), this being his last home-Duke game, and everything else, he will finally shine the way we thought he would when he got here.

Another Gary story for you...
I was told by a UMD administrator years ago that Gary was instrumental in making the lower rows the student section. That adminstrator said Gary wanted the home court advantage that having the students surrounding the court would give UMD teams.
If anyone else has any knowledge of this matter please share it.

I was in the marching band when they opened comcast and we got a behind the scenes tour before playing the grand opening. In the locker room and shit. Laid out on the court. I’m pretty sure they mentioned that fact when we were doing that.
Yeah, apparently he was pretty vocal about it.
Winning is the best marketing for any sports team and he was determined to get any conceivable home team advantage.

This is easily the best game Pe' has had all year,
first five minutes of the second half are everything. If we come out with the same energy and execution, we can take it down to the wire.

The penetration and kick has been the difference. That has been missing the last couple games. We are not a jump shooting team. We can get to the lane and dish or shoot or get fouled. That is our teams strength. We need more of that in the 2nd half.

Fortunately I do get ESPN3 for all of the ACC Network Split Games where they always show a team from the Carolinas
And do plan to watch the rest of the Maryland games this year even though it is a rebuilding year. Duke is far from the only game (every game counts) and hopefully the team will sleep on it tonight and get ready for VT starting tomorrow.
Help is on the way next year and I expect a much stronger front line with the off-season strength and conditioning program. Turgeon is a solid coach who will do great things in the coming year.

Well we haven't really learned anything new about our team
Poor free throw shooting first and foremost. No surprise. Just didn’t expect it from Stoglin. I’m really surprised at the refs biased calling tonight. For instance that last foul on Pe’shon….they call a charge…or whatever they called…..actually does anyone know what they just called? Either way…..f’d up officiating tonight.
But … we made dook sweat and I think we played pretty tough but again we looked tired at times and Len…..wtf is up with his hands? As I’ve said before…limp as spaghetti. Oh well……no real big deal but we are improving in some areas.

Different levels
Its a lot easier getting your shots off in high school than in a major division 1 team. Johnny Rhodes had the same issues when he first arrived at Maryland.
How about the WIDE OPEN 3 point shots? How come they don't fall?
I understand it’s harder to get off shots in college compared to HS but when he takes wide open shots, he sometimes can’t even hit the rim or the backboard or both. Still mind boggling.
Confindence
And at this level the defender closes on the shot a lot faster. If you are lazy that open shot ends up in the first row. I understand your frustration but right now the game is all about confidence. He just doesn’t have it in his shot right now.
Mark has to find a way to get 40 minutes out of these guys
We have no patience on offense late in games and we don’t match defensive and rebounding intensity.
Another thing we have to do is improve foul shooting. Teams have no fear of putting us on the line.
2nd half does us in again
13-2 run in 2nd half to NC State, 21-3 against Florida St., down by 1 to Temple in 2nd half before they pulled away and 11-1 tonight against Duke. Man, I wish we knew how to avoid those stretches in the 2nd half. We could’ve split those four games instead of losing them all.
Then I blame Mosley, Padgett & Bino
b/c they are the only ones left from two years ago.

I love how Turge blew off Coach K during handshakes at the end of the game
Coach K comes over with his same BS after every game. “You have a great team, you played really hard, blah, blah”. Turge just shook his hand and kept on walking. That at least made me happy at the end of another tough loss.
This team has more holes than my crabbing net.
I can’t wait til the reinforcements arrive next year.

I think Turge
will understand now why we hate duke so much. To feel that burning pain when we lose to them is like no other.

They were horrible tonight. They usually are, but tonight. Might as well piss on Gary’s signature. Or maybe they were honoring it by giving all the calls to Duke. BS

Turge vs Stoglin
I’m interested to see how this turns out. Stoglin was benched at a pretty critical juncture during the game, w/the ball down 5 for two offensive possessions. I have no idea what goes on in the locker room, but would not be surprised if Stoglin in gone at the end of the year. I know Plumlee scored a bunch, but I feel Turge was defending the perimeter daring the Plumlee’s to score, Len and Pankey have no muscle soft all night letting Plumlee catch the ball no the blocks. Bang him around, couple of hard fouls he’ll think twice.

However, I can’t believe that Mark wanted the inside guys to take on Mason one-on-one down low. Defenders on the opposite side as the ball should have been clogging the middle. It really is basic man-on-man team defense. One of the problems we have with this team is that the collective bball IQ is really low. They don’t seem to be able to adjust to changing situations.

Glad he had the balls to call out these horrible refs. Turge should’ve got a tech at some point, would have fired the crowd up to another level and won over the fans for life.

Was hoping to see the team turn a corner or show some maturation
I think there was some evidence of that on D and O, but less so in some key areas like FTs and the now-inevitable second-half scoring drought. We keep pace with teams and then fail on O (and often D too) at critical junctures and fall too hard behind. It’s tough watching a season while sensing that we’re never going to quite turn the corner. I guess we can hope, but just haven’t seen any real progress these last three games. Although I have to admit that, given how awful we played when we opened the season against Alabama, we have vastly improved and Turgeon and the Terps have nothing to be embarrassed about in any of our losses really. The Tarheels can’t say the same thing, though, no matter how stellar they usually are.

looked much better tonight overall, I think its one of those things where his shot feels god but he just cant get it to go down. The key i thought offensively was mosely and it seemed all of his shots rimmed out…..tonight is just unfortunate
