BetterTerps.com
This is a really cool site a fan built to encourage University of Maryland studients, alumni, and fans to take a more active role in our basketball team. Obviously something that everyone should be able to get behind, and if you can't then let's be honest, you're most likely part of the problem. While I'm sure most of the people on this site are active in supporting our Terps, it doesn't hurt to have a reminder either for you or the people you know who may have had lesser interest as of late in our team. Spread the word.
And no, I have no affiliation with this site at all, nor does it have any affiliation with the University of Maryland. Saw someone post it on IMS and thought it deserved a place here, as well as any other Terps fan boards.

I stand behind this
and think its a good idea. But you should probably get the facts in that timeline right.
For 2008, you have:
After beating UNC in overtime greatly thanks to a performance of up-and-coming star Greivis Vasquez, Gary Williams becomes the all-time leader in wins against the top-ranked team in the country with seven. A season finale victory at Virginia led the Terps to an ACC Co-Championship with Duke.
The UNC win came in 2008, and the ACC championship sealed by the win over UVA was in 2010.
Might be other mistakes but that one stood out.
Someone needs to take charge and lead new chants at the games from the student section
Either bring a white board or posters and have the crowd follow that person(s)
Also can generate ideas and/or familiarity with new cheers online if that site had a forum

Another problem is the pace of the cheers, often they speed up too fast and everyone gets out of sync. Say what you want about Duke fans, they hold their cheers and pace very well. Of course, that’s a lot easier to do in Cameron than Comcast.
Also easier to do when there’s only 600 of them.

It really only takes one person with Internet access and a sharpie
Put the chants online and hold up the sign to the fans from the front row
For unc game in 08 it took two kids to get the crowd alternating to spell out D-U-I Ty! After ty Lawson got a drunk driving arrest.
Obviously we should avoid DUI chants now but you get the idea
Our culture has always been trash-oriented
and there’s nothing wrong with that…
I actually kind of disagree
I don’t necessarily mind some of it. When you’re getting into a players head or something of that nature, it’s fine IMHO. But when our fans are just rude and trashy just for the sake of being rude and trashy, that’s what I can’t stand. I’d much rather we try to be more clever as a fan base than obscene.
Like with what Kansas’ fans did last night when they held up “CUNDIFF” and all swayed to the left (don’t mean to pick open wounds, just saying) when Texas A&M was shooting free throws. It seems like the only unity we have as a fan base during games is screaming F you. I don’t however want to sell out and start taking other people’s chants and such, like when the Temple fans used the “I believe that we will win” at the end of the game against us.
In the end though, all I really care about is that we show up and get loud as hell. There’s not really room for me to nitpick until that happens obviously.

Also
I think it’s unfortunate the way we treat opposing fans some of the time. I don’t necessarily like comparing our fan base with others, especially in the ACC, but I’ve been down to VT a few times for football and basketball games (including the OT game where Greivis went off, completely epic) and sat in the student section every time I went, cheered like hell for the Terps, and not one person really messed with me outside of a few fun comments. Letting the opponents fans know they’re in our house is one thing, harrassing them is another thing IMO.

It's not about just being trashy
Maryland has been such a tough place to play because we get into opponent’s heads. Read any quote from players about which they struggle more against: coordinated chants or random screams about a player.
Sure it sometimes gets obnoxious, especially when a player is hurt, but it is a lot of fun to yell at a player and throw them off their game. I have had at least 3 current NBA players tell me to “go f*ck myself.” Guess what? We won every game.
We can stay with what we are and be great, we don’t need chant sheets.
Not to be all Chucky D on people
But most of the “Fuck Duke” type cheers didn’t start until pretty much after the national championship. It was the 2004 Duke game when everyone chanted “Fuck you, JJ.”
Sure, people were hostile, inappropriate, and sometimes obscene. But the whole student section chanting “Fuck Duke?” I don’t remember it when I was going to games at Cole as a kid.
Students act like this level of obscenity is some time-honored tradition. No. It was pretty much started by people that are now in their mid to late 20s. The whole thing just smacks of “LOOK AT ME, I’M IN COLLEGE—MY PARENTS AREN’T HERE TO TELL ME TO SHUT UP SO I’M GOING TO SAY THE F WORD!”
It isn’t a longstanding tradition. It isn’t creative. I don’t even try to defend it to my coworkers down here in Charlotte. Be creative, be hostile, be loud, heckle the shit out of opposing players. “Fuck Duke” is just this lazy, faux tradition that should be stopped (not to mention, it smacks of some sort of weird fixation with Duke).

Shock
My friend was doing the Fuke Duck poster a few years b4 Sally Jenkins wrote about it. The F Duke shirts were worn by students in the late 90s. They proliferated in the early 2000s as you mentioned. (I’ve talked about my friend’s “Fuke Duck”/“Wojo Blows” flip side poster. We would make them during the 2 hour wait, so we “got them in.” Security eventually did snag his Fuke Duck sign.)
Here’s good reading for you, if you haven’t already. I wouldn’t be “shocked” if you’re read it during a lunch break – lol

Added Bonus
Sally Jenkins’ quote about Duke fans (due to their raunchy antics): “Here’s a really funny one: Anyone from Duke complaining about student behavior.”

I still have my F Duke t-shirt I got in 1997.
I will dust it off and wear it tomorrow in honor of Gary.

I remember those T Shirts – weren’t as common – entire student body didn’t wear them :)

Don't get me wrong
I don’t have any problem with some level of profanity or vulgarity. The chants/shirts don’t bother me because I’m offended, but because I think the mass scale of it is tacky.
The CUNDIFF letters swaying back and forth
was classic. Not a bad idea for us to do it when Puke goes to the line. Of course, the students would probably be Redskin fans.

We've had this discussion before
Comcast is 50/50 split Ravens/Skins fan.
Great Idea
This is great. Clever cheer ideas should be posted on that website and voted on. At the end of the day we win and we get more students at games and its going to be loud. But its those clever cheers that get into the heads of opponents that really make a place tough to play at for opposing teams.
STOGS 4 PREZ!!!
Thanks for the Feedback!
Hey guys, creator of the site here. Long time TT reader, first time posting. We’ll be collecting all of the feedback from email, this post, and some of the other UMD forums, and updating the site accordingly. Some mechanism for students and fans to suggest and vote on cheers/ideas will be incorporated.
Also...
If anyone who frequents IMS, there’s a post about the site on there too. If you can direct them over here if they want a response to me, as I can read that post, but cannot respond.
why have a site like this if we cant give our opinion on what would make Maryland basketball better?
to the creator of this site, consider making a forum section
Video Playlist!
Hey guys, we’re working on the forum part but for now, sit back and watch 3 hours of UMD basketball history and try not to get pumped for Miami and UNC.
