BB Expectations ...

1. Parker and Padge - have improved significantly this year. But they had a long journey ahead of them. If they continue to improve, I think they will be consistent, good players - just not that consistent yet.

2. Pankey - when I watch his first games as a college player, i think he could become a great rebounder, defender and decent scorer. I think his personal motivation will be the key factor.

3. Len and Faust - sky is the limit, but it takes time. Very, very few freshman walk on a college court and dominate their position. The sky is the limit for these two, but not in the first 3/4's of their freshman year. Especially Len, given how he got here.

Bottom Line: Most of our players are playing for the first time. They are not Lebron or Kevin Durrant talents as they entered college. They have varying degrees of upside. But to expect too much this year will only frustrate yourself. Enjoy watching how they improve and how Turgeon handles.

First two points are right on.

As for the third, I’ve lowered my expectations for Faust and Len but you’re right in the sense that they do have a lot of potential, especially given their size and athleticism.

I think most people will agree with me that you can’t really have any complaints about the overall performance of Stoglin and Mosley this year. I also think most people would agree that Pe’Shon needs to be better for this team to be good (but we also acknowledge that the injury and resulting late start hurt him a lot)

Overall I agree with you though and your last statement echoes my feelings about how to handle this season.

My expectations for this season have been relatively low all along,

and they may very well exceded those expectations. Frankly, though, my concern for next season is at PG. Of all the players, I’m most disappointed in the play of Pe’Shon.

by curterp on Jan 18, 2012 9:22 AM EST reply actions

Agreed

I had low expectations this year, 6-10 at best in the ACC in my opinion, but MD could exceed that.

PG is a concern for next year, and go figure we thought that would be our strong point and that we needed more depth inside. I’m hoping Howard is just going through the growing pains of learning to play in Turgeons system, but we have no depth behind him if he isn’t getting it done on a particular night. Faust is not a PG, and Stoglin is playing his best when he is off the ball. Allen is a 2 guard by nature but is trying to learn the position, but we really need a natural floor general to be the PG, not converts. Here is to hoping Turgeon finds his PG of the future in 2013, he’s sure as hell looking at everyone it seems

Same here...

…we knew it was gong to be painful. This team will not finish above .500 in ACC play. But the future is bright.

Children should be seen and not heard.

Has anyone noticed

The last few highly ranked players out of Baltimore who came to UMD haven’t really matched the hype? Mosley, Parker, Faust (even going back to Braxton Dupree) were all top 50 players (95/96’s on ESPN) which means to me that they should be solid contributors in their freshman year. ESPN has this to say:

94-96: High-major prospect
Player is the centerpiece to a high-major program who starts three to four years.

The only player on our team who I’d consider anything resembling a centerpiece is Stoglin and even that is kinda deceptive. If he had more talent around him, he wouldn’t have the opportunity to shoot 15-20 shots per game.

Not saying that Parker and Faust won’t ever match their rankings, they just haven’t come in as polished as you’d like.

by Terps12 on Jan 18, 2012 9:29 AM EST reply actions

Parker isn't from Baltimore, and Faust is a freshman

Faust is a true freshman, and the only true freshman that I know of that come in and contribute the way you seem to be expecting are top 10 talents who are one and dones. We aren’t landing 5 star talents who come in “as polished as you’d like”, they need to be polished.

Even then, Parker is a sophomore who had never really played in a set offense in HS, his elite athleticism helped him dominate his HS play and get his ranking. So he’s learning to play in an offense, he’ll be a solid contributor of the bench in his Junior and Senior seasons.

by djcarv2005 on Jan 18, 2012 9:49 AM EST up reply actions

Will Shaq contribute next year?

I got the feeling that he will be able to ‘hold his own’ next season, as a freshman…but not be a one and done due to the fact that he plays center and is only 6’8".

by Zol on Jan 18, 2012 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think he'll be one and done at all

He is still learning the game, he came from the Bahamas a few years ago. He’ll contribute, he might even start at some point in the seson, but I don’t think he gets huge minutes. He looks like he is in the mold of JW, which means he’ll need to drop some weight to get into game shape

by djcarv2005 on Jan 18, 2012 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

he’ll be a solid contributor of the bench in his Junior and Senior seasons.

Based on ESPN’s evaluation/grading scale, that isn’t what he should have been. You’d assume these players are going to be the top contributor on a team like ours, especially considering we have nine scholarship players. When you’re coming off the bench on a team like that, it doesn’t bode well. He’s averaging 4.8 ppg and 3.6 rpg this year (which is highly inflated by our soft OOC schedule). To compare: Ian Miller (37th overall/9th SG) averages 13ppg and 2.3 rpg, Jordan McRae averages 9.5/1.8 (10th SG), Jelan Kendrick 4.3/1.8 (11th SG). Parker was the 12th ranked SG and 45th overall.

To give you other comparisons, guys like Michael Snaer, Durand Scott, and Dexter Strickland were all ranked comparably in the 2009 class and mostly averaged between 8-13ppg last year. I’m not saying I expected Parker or Faust to be at 15ppg, but 10ppg on this team shouldn’t be out of the question. Most top 50 players have at least an impact halfway through their sophomore years. I’d like to see Parker make that step.

by Terps12 on Jan 18, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Whoa...

Snaer was a highly touted 5 star recruit. I dont know what Scott was, but I thought strickland was very highly rated as well…. but its definitly not fair to compare Snaer to Parker -

by all accounts Snaer was disappointing for what he was ranked as well…. though he sure seems to be doing better this year…

by vaterp9 on Jan 18, 2012 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Ummmmm

Parker was a borderline top 50 player depending on which recruiting service you look at. Like I said and what many people look over, Parker put up numbers in HS because of his elite athleticism, and he was ranked accordingly. You don’t put up numbers in college on elite athleticism alone, you need to know how to operate in the offense. He is learning that, and by his junior/senior seasons he’ll figure it out. He is already showing that he is a great defender, so he is progressing.

As for Faust, are you even aware what class he is from? He is a true freshman, get off his case. If he is playing like this next year then we should be a little more worried. He seems to be adapting to the game, he is taking fewer bad shots and slashing more, playing to his strengths. He wasn’t a highly taughted 5 star coming in, perhaps you had too high of expectations for him.

by djcarv2005 on Jan 18, 2012 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

I understand Faust is a freshman

and I’m less concerned with him than I am with Parker. FYI- Parker isn’t a great defender. He plays defense sometimes and is extremely athletic, but don’t go calling him great.

With Faust, coming out of hs as the top player in Maryland and basically a top 10 shooting guard, you’d expect him to be able to shoot. From everything I read on here, Faust was supposed to be a shooter and the question was whether he’d be able to handle the strength of the college game. You can’t even call him a streaky shooter at this point, he’s been absolutely horrible in that regard (airballs > made 3s). Maybe he doesn’t have college 3 range yet, or maybe he’s nervous, I don’t know.

And for the record, I didn’t have “too high of expectations for him”, just do a quick search on the articles regarding his commitment and recruiting process or look at any preseason thread talking about his potential. The kid was basically a savior to people on here (just like Mosely was back in 2007). That’s the hype I’m talking about. I don’t have a problem with what Faust has been. I just wish he could shoot.

by Terps12 on Jan 18, 2012 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with Parker

he is good, not great as a defender, but he is improving.

If you read into ESPNs write up of him, it pretty much says he could destroy people in high school (literally, those words) off the dribble. It said he had 3 point range and was a “streaky” shooter from the 3, so teams would defend the drive and force him to shoot 3s. That said, I agree that I haven’t seen any sort of 3 point range for him, unless they are trying to say he can shoot the ball that far, because it sure doesn’t make it in the basket. So, given that write-up, I always thought he was a better slasher who could take someone off the dribble rather than a big time shooter. I hope his shot improves, it is plain ugly now. At least he is a freshman and has 3 more years to fix it.

JWill had a pretty good freshman season, and he wasn't top 50...

…it depends upon the player and how quickly they adjust. That part of the equation is a crap shoot.

by curterp on Jan 18, 2012 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Somewhat disagree

Faust in on pace to match that description. He has started a good portion of his freshman year and (with hard work) I see him as a fringe All-ACC player his junior and maybe All-ACC his senior year. He might end up being better than a piece of Maryland basketball than a one and done would be.

Mosley did end up being a 4 year starter. He should have probably been more a 92-93 but is a role player who would walk into the starting lineup on all but 12-18 programs. He would be a great player on this team if we had Jordan/Stoglin sharing the scoring and was huge in 09-10 when we shared the ACC regular season championship.

Dupree never worked hard. Gary scared him and he had no motivation. Ended up playing at Towson where he was as good there as at Maryland his Freshman year.

I guess those who were wondering if Len

would be “one and done” have crawled under a rock.

He could easy still be one in done. 7 foot ath still learning the us game I’d draft him.

by valenciais1 on Jan 18, 2012 9:43 AM EST up reply actions

not really

if Len was taken in the 2nd round as a prospect you wouldn’t be fired. ESPN actually ran an article on him about 3 weeks ago when he first debuted stating that if he continued at his 14/8 pace he would be on NBA radars very fast due to his size alone.

by djcarv2005 on Jan 18, 2012 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

if he continued at his 14/8 pace...

doesn’t look like that is gonna happen this year

and lets go to Bentleys...

by johnnyrobs13 on Jan 18, 2012 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

I don't really disagree

in that his size and coordination will likely land him on NBA radars in the not-so-distant future.

But picking nits, the statement was conditional—IF he continues to put up 14 and 8, people will take notice.

The IF hasn’t happened. Len has struggled against teams when he doesn’t have a 4+ inch height advantage. I’d imagine the typical NBA scout sees this, and realizes he isn’t ready—if he can’t outplay 6’10’’ guys in college, he won’t outplay the 6’10’’ guys in the NBA.

by bshock on Jan 18, 2012 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

Think of it like this. Len was playing Jv (Radford) now he is playing varsity.the speed of the game is different.give him a couple of games and he will be hoopin again!

Certainly not doubting his potential

and I’m not terribly discouraged by his relative struggles. I just think he needs work to reach his potential, and as he stands now, he isn’t close to NBA ready—that’s my only point.

Valid point about playing overseas

but your initial comment referenced the draft, which would suggest NBA. I just don’t see that happening after this year unless he turns it on at some point.

The far greater concern, as you reference, is that he decides the US game isn’t for him, and goes back to the international game.

by bshock on Jan 18, 2012 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

No matter, Len'll have his chance to show a packed house

how good he is next Tuesday. Duke’s inside game may be suspect, but there’s three
big guys to confront (6-10, 6-10, 6-11).

by nonstopjoe on Jan 18, 2012 12:27 PM EST reply actions

I dunno, perhaps we are all overreacting to a foreseeable loss (20/20 hindsight)

A motivated, senior laden team at home versus an opponent who played a game 48 hours earlier and THEN had to travel to Tallahasee. Sure I would have liked to see a win, sure that run by FLST was painful to watch, and sure no one other than TS scored at a level we would have expected.

FL ST may have lost some stinkers, but they are big and experienced and were playing at home. Its not like we do not have secondary scoring options beyond TS, its just unclear which one is going to step up on a game to game basis. Given the team’s relative youth and SM’s gimpy ankle, that should be expected. One thing is for certain, last year’s class of recruits – BW, TS, MP, & AP – have all shown improvement and in the case of the latter four flashes of talent that give us hope for the future.

The only Terp that I have questions about is PH. Since returning from the injury, his play has been inconsistent and he has not been the cure-all floor general that most of us had expected. The TEAM is clearly better with him available; however the expected immediate reduction of TOs and increase in Assists has not materialized. He has shown that he can play lke a top-tier PG so I think that given time (which they have THIS week to prepare for Temple) he will work harder on running the team effectively.

I expect a win against Temple, with the correctable issues from the FL ST addressed by MT through this week and visible improvement during Saturday’s game.

Regards -
