Maryland Minute - 01.16.12 - Looking at Padgett's Growth Under Turgeon
That was a tough loss to FSU, but I think Maryland has the potential to be a pretty decent team, one that will hopefully end up playing at a level higher than I expected at the start of the season. Part of the reason for that higher level of play has been junior forward James Padgett.

Great piece on Turgeon's impact on James Padgett, who's development this season isn't getting enough attention, IMO.

Padgett
I’ll have to admit, I am very plesently surprised at his development this season. He is still a garbage basket player, but I’ll take any player that is averaging 8 offensive rebounds a game. His free throw shooting is inconsistent, but is improving vastly. Now only if he could develop some post moves!
I love his motor, man.
But his horrible hands have me pulling my hair out.

his hands don't kill me
but his consistent missing of easy layups does
As long as he picks up his own rebounds! ;)
Hell, maybe that’s part of his scheme to lead the league in ORs, lol
JW leaving
That is the biggest reason for Padgett’s progress. JW and Dino got most of the minutes last year. Padgett is playing crazy minutes this year. He is making the most of it, hope it continues.
Junkyard James!!
He’s made tremendous strides this season and I’m looking forward to seeing him develop more under Turgeon…
Former Terp Buck Williams made a nice career
out of inside defense and collecting rebounds. Wonder how often he golfs with fellow
club member GW?
Buck was
The nicest guy with the worst golf swing I ever caddied for at Congresh, doubt him and Gary play much unless he’s improved from his early days on the course. Also caddied for former Dookie Mark Alarie who was an ok golfer and guy if I remember correctly.
This isn't worth a fanpost,
But Jake Layman was announced as a McDonald’s All American nominee today. I have no clue what this means about his chances of actually being a Mcdonald’s All American (probably not much), but its still pretty cool. As far as I can tell, Cleare was not nominated.
The final rosters for the McD’s AA teams will be announced on February 9th.

Correction: Shaq was nominated, along with everyone else in Texas.
So yea, the nominations look like the mean nothing, but a man can dream.
Layman has a better chance than Shaq
There are a ton of high 4 star and 5 star Center and Power Forward recruits this year.
Padgett
I love padgett, I think if he was a half a second faster to the basket he would average 15 points a game. I saw it once last night where he just grabbed the ball and just slammed it instead of taking that one dribble he always does. Last night showed that we really need him to play well and be in the game for ust to be successful, him being out of the lineup with foul trouble hurt us.
Yep, Padge is improving
As I said in an older post, one dribble is usually ok only if it’s for a two handed single dribble power step right up to the hoop, or to quickly change direction for a follow right at the hoop. Otherwise, his no dribble moves when he’s in that area are becoming more effective. His little left handed go to move is getting there too. They will be the Killer P’s by the end of the season.

Not sure this is worthy of a fanpost, but...
…would we be better off playing Padge/Pankey down low – both seem to hold their own on the boards – and moving Len away from the basket to knock down some mid-range jumpers? That’s not a part of Padge or Pankey’s game, but Len seems to have pretty decent touch, and I think he could become pretty effective from 12-15 feet.
no
Len needs to get his butt down low and learn to play on the block. He should dominate down there.

Highly Unlikely
I imagine Padgett and Len will actually start next year at the 5 and 4, with Cleare being the first guy off the bench and all three playing minutes in the 20’s. It’s really unlikely that Cleare will start, because thats just not the way its done. Plus, it wouldn’t matter anyway, theyd all get tons of minutes. That being said, it wouldnt surprise me to see Cleare starting by the end of the season. Either way, I see Pankey as the odd man out. Not saying he wont play, but I imagine his minutes will be down around 10 a game. Of course, he could transfer or I could be completely wrong :)
I also see Faust (starting) and Layman running a pretty effective 3 spot.. offensively and defensively.
It's all going to be dependent
upon what Turge sees in the pre-season practices. I just feel like Len’s strength is at the 4. We have to use him at the 5 this year because we have no true center.
