Can 'Noles Contain Stogs Like They Did Barnes?

From http://www.seminoles.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/011612aae.html - Maryland ranks in the top half of the conference in scoring and -- like North Carolina -- is paced by a true scoring threat While the Tar Heels lean on sophomore Harrison Barnes, the Terps rely on the output of their own second-year player in Terrell Stoglin. The Tucson, Ariz. native ranks first in the ACC in scoring with an average of 20.9 points per contest. Florida State's menacing defense kept Barnes in check by limiting him to 14 points and it will have to do the same against Stoglin, who has hit for at least 20 points in two of Maryland's three league games so far this season. We probably don't win if Stogs isn't near or better than his average and somewhat efficient in getting there...

Don't think so.

No knock on Barnes but Stoglin is too active for them to shut down, IMO. Plus, he’s better at knocking down “bad” shots.

Stogs

He will put up at least 15 shots tonight. So if he shoots like he has been 5 for 15 in my opinion thats containing him. If he gets to the lane and creates contact and has 10+ foul shots then we should be in a good place to win.

Against the Noles, its about attacking there big men forcing them to come out and challenge a driver, either dish or go into them. Their bigs are not that fleet or foot so they fill contest every shot and foul.

I think efficiency for Stoglin is key...

If they double or pressure Stogs a lot to either take a lot of poor shots (ex. 4-13 shooting), turn the ball over, and no one else picks up the slack, then we could be in for a long night…

But if they contain him and force him to take very few shots but he makes these (ex. 4-6 shooting), but he doesn’t turn the ball over and gets others open looks or someone else picks up the scoring slack, then we still could have a good night even if he doesn’t score.

It all depends on how good his decision making is tonight out of pressure which I’m sure he’ll see plenty of, but I think he is vastly improved in this area over the course of the season.

I don’t think getting to the foul line is necessary either…I kind of like Stogs staying more out on the 3-pt line (He’s our best 3-pt threat still) and occasionally driving. I’d rather see Faust, Mosely drive and kick to him, then vice-versa.

In summary, i don’t think he needs to hit his average, but he needs to make good decisions since he will still be the focal point of the other team defensively.

I think it's unlikely that either team will score over 60 points.

So it’s not critical if Stogs doesn’t get his 21. What is critical is that Mosley and Padgett continue to step up like they have recently and for Howard to take better care of the ball.

Len

Think Len is spending too much time with his back to the basket – would like to see him show more of his perimeter game, and open up the middle more for Padge and Pinkney. Also, might open the lane more for Faust and Parker. When he does post up, guards need to feed him more.

by bybob on Jan 17, 2012 11:13 AM EST reply actions

My thoughts exactly

Len just doesn’t have that good back to the basket game right now…I think this could devleop but right now against tall ACC players he isn’t getting his shot off close to the basket.

The elbow I think is his best spot right now
At the elbow he would open up a lot….when Stogs drives instead of forcing up some shots he could kick it out to Len for a15 footer….He can definately shoot the midrange but he hasn’t been given any looks outside of a few feet from the basket the last few games…

I think he isn’t being used to his full potential in the post, and Padgett grabs the offensive rebounds anyway so taking his man (a center) out of the paint would possibly??? free up Padgett to get even more boards….just a thought.

Agree

I think he’d actually be more effective on the baseline than the elbow though. His baseline jumper is very solid and it would give him more space to use his athleticism (did someone say backdoor cut for an alley-oop?). We’ll see how he adjusts against what should be the toughest defending he’s seen all season.

Anyone going to the game tonight?

I live in tallahassee so i will be their tonight pulling for our terps!

by CameronReber on Jan 17, 2012 11:32 AM EST reply actions

Stoglin is giving up about 3-4 in. to anyone who will be guarding him, so you'd think he'll be shut down

but i looked at the box score of their Clemson game and CU has some 5’11 ish guy who lit ’em up, so maybe guys like Soglin and even Howard will be able to score on them.

by Maryland1206 on Jan 17, 2012 11:38 AM EST reply actions

After a quick glance at the box score of the Clemson-FSU game, it's rather easy to see where the game was won...

Clemson shot 24/49 from the field and 28/33 from the line while FSU was 22/62 and 10/13. Clemson shot poorly from long range (3/14) but outrebounded the Noles and forced 16 turnovers. In other words, EFFICIENCY EFFICIENCY EFFICIENCY.

I can't see Stogs having

too much trouble with a guy like Dulkys or Loucks. I know they’re both listed as 6’5, but I have a feeling Stogs would have no problem blowing past either one of them. He struggled last game a bit with a more athletic Glen Rice Jr. guarding him (back problems?), but I think he should be able to put up some points tonight.

Box Score had 15 for Barnes...

He averages 16.8 on the year and would’ve gotten there if he wasn’t sitting for large parts of the second half… FSU just played the game of their lives, Stogs will be able to find shots against their guards without venturing into the teeth of their defense

Game Line

I cant believe FSU is a 11.5 pt favorite, i dont care that they just beat UNC and are at home, this is a conference game and they tend to be hard fought. I say MD wins by 3 with Stogs going beast mode putting up at least 23.

by cSq on Jan 17, 2012 11:44 AM EST reply actions

Stoglins output is directly related to stoglin and no one else

hes not the kind of player that can really be “shut down” when he is in “Stogmode”. We have all seen him hit ridiculous shots time and time again vs taller, better, etc defenders. In no way is he a better player than barnes, but he is certainly a better scorer. He is truly Kobe-esque in his ability to just turn it on and pile in points, no matter what else is going on in the game. And like Kobe, its not ALWAYS the best thing for the team, but its always there as a possibility

before we get ahead of ourselves

this is the same kid that put up 6 pts against alabama, a similar type of defense. But like i said above, i expect 23 pts out of him. Hopefully its not on 30 shots.

by cSq on Jan 17, 2012 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

that was a lifetime ago for this team

i dont know if i think we will win tonight, but, as it has been said before, it seems silly to compare the 1/17/12 terps to the november/december terps

by terps3030 on Jan 17, 2012 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Barnes=overrated

Stoglin can get a shot up anytime, anywhere on the court. Barnes rarely creates his own shots and lacks the quickness and handle to do so. You cannot compare the two. Stoglin will have to get hot for us to win in Tallahassee. He is due for a great shooting game.

+1

Mosley is too short to matchup against Barnes, and I don’t see Faust being put on Barnes either. Looks like Mosley would draw him anyways, with maybe Parker drawing him in relief due to his athleticism?

DUDE! lol

barnes IS quick and he DEFINITELY CAN create his own shot. have you been watching the same top 5 draft pick that i have? haha. seriously i was thinking that alot of barnes was hype, but after watching him several times this year i can say the kid is a legit scorer. to average 16 on a team that has zeller and henson and all the other shooters is pretty nice. stoglin is a bit quicker, but per position, i see them as being equal.
fsu beat them through their bigs and making kendall look bad.

by space_ on Jan 17, 2012 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

hope that was for mprice...

I’m agreeing here that not many can stop Barnes, lol

by djcarv2005 on Jan 18, 2012 8:17 AM EST up reply actions

Stogs has the ability to get his shot of that few players have

He just gets defenders on the wrong foot or leaning one way or the other. Even defenders with length on him can’t seem to get to his shots. Not many guys in the nation can do that.

by GW_ on Jan 17, 2012 12:23 PM EST reply actions

They can absolutely stop Stogs.

Just not sure if they will, but I’d give them a 60% chance of doing so. This is the best defensive team in the league. If we win, it will likely be a low-scoring game with lots of offensive rebounding from us and being sharp from 3 point range and with more great defense. My guess is that driving to the basket and standard back to the basket post moves will be the hardest place to get our points tonight.

Key to this upset though – Almost no way Stogs wins this game on his own. The entire TEAM will have to come to play or forget it.

On another note, I kind of like that people are getting a bit more swagger about these terps again. We’ve made some great strides as a team and think that will continue, but not sure we’re ready for this challenge. This is at least as challenging as the NC State game to open the ACC season this year.

Stogs could start lighting up the court

If Sean and Nick hit a few jumpers to take the double team off Stogs. Len and Pankey could also be open for a few quick inside buckets if FSU concentrates on Stogs and leaves the inside open. Pe’ is going to play a very critical part of this game. If he winds up with double digit assists, we should win tonight.

by Snappin Terp on Jan 17, 2012 4:01 PM EST reply actions

FSU has some big bodies inside,

and we have been getting a lot of shots blocked the last couple of games. I think GT had around 9, and Ty Walker had 8 by himself when we played Wake. When Pankey, Padge, Len get the ball inside they gotta finish strong tonight, and Padge needs to know when to go and when to kick (something that, incredibly, he started doing at the end of the GT game).

by terps3 on Jan 17, 2012 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

It's disappointing that Len isn' putting up consistent double-doubles but...

I honestly think he could win us this game. Not shooting but with rebounding. To me, it seems like its going to come down to rebounding. IDK if we r better than FSU but I know we can beat them. And its gonna come down to rebounding I think.

UCLA who?

by terps97 on Jan 17, 2012 6:22 PM EST reply actions

So, in retrospect

FSU couldn’t contain Stoglin, but they contained the rest of the team which seemed to have did the trick. Stoglin was lighting it up, and FSU couldn’t help but continue to jump to try to block his shots, which Stoglin took advantage of and jumped into to get to the FT line.
