Maryland Terrapins vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: The GameThread

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Maryland Terrapins, Jan 15, 2012 4:00 PM EST

First of all: no Ravens and/or NFL talk. Please.

Now: game tips at 4:00, with ACC Network as TV. If you don't have an ACC Network affiliate (and you might be surprised) you can watch on ESPN3 or check the usual streaming locations, like FirstRowSports.

Random, Baseless Prediction: Alex Len fouls out, but has the best game of his career otherwise. I feel like it's time for an Alex Len national breakout after the pretty unimpressive Wake game, and I don't think GT has the size to consistently bother him.

Prediction: It's so tough to really assess this game. Maryland is probably a superior team to Georgia Tech and if they played 10 times in a vacuum, Maryland would win 6 or 7 of them. But life isn't a vacuum, and Georgia Tech is playing over their heads. I'll go with my gut and say Maryland just barely nips this one, somewhere around 76-71.

For today's guessing game: with Terrell Stoglin injured, there might be an extra onus put back on our ol' friend Nick Faust. Give me how many points he scores tonight, with number of minutes + airballs as the tiebreaker (22 minutes + 2 airballs = 24). Go.

If you're in the South,

the game is on 8655 on Dish Network (WJZY).

I’m calling a double-double for Faust this afternoon on points and assists.

Sweet Game is on local TV here in Los Angeles!

Go ACC Network. As for Faust I’ll give him 11pts 0 airballs in 27mins

9 and 24

9 points, 24 minutes, no airballs. He will chuck up a couple of serious bricks though.

by JuanBlaze on Jan 15, 2012 3:22 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

7 in 27

no airballs. but i also think he plays well outside of scoring. plenty of assists, little to no turnovers, and a good job defensively

by packman1 on Jan 15, 2012 3:26 PM EST reply actions

I think Pe'Shon is going to be the key to this game

He still thinks too much like the guy who came off the bench last year to make plays and spark the offense. He has a much bigger role now and is learning how to be get the job done in different situations like playing with a lead. You can see how much the injury set him back.

Heard a rumor about Def Coord

That Brian Baker will be named Mon or Tues.

by gw9204 on Jan 15, 2012 3:46 PM EST reply actions

The announcement, whatever it is, will be probably be coming by Tuesday simply b/c of timing

It seems obvious to me that the only reason they waited so long to fire Bradford was to get someone lined up behind him. So thy have somebody. Whether that’s Baker or Bradley or Brian Stewart, I don’t know.

by Ben Broman on Jan 15, 2012 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry, my mistake. Brian Stewart is the rumor I heard.

Sorry, got my Brian’s confused. We were discussing Brian Baker also. But it was Brian Stewart who supposedly will be named. Ben do you know anything about him?

by gw9204 on Jan 15, 2012 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

Baker?

Was at Houston, was okay there. NFL DC experience is really nice. Not a fantastic recruiter.

by Ben Broman on Jan 15, 2012 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

Stewart :)

I have not been able to find much on Brian Stewart

by gw9204 on Jan 15, 2012 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, yeah, that was a typo

Stewart was who I was talking about. Was DC with the Cowboys for two years.

Baker's not my preferred candidate

No DC experience except for one year in the early nineties on an interim basis.

Although I agree, Padge is a black hole.

by SeattleTerp on Jan 15, 2012 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

It is starting to get ridiculous

I love Padge’s hustle, he does work on the O boards like no other, but if he could just just learn the concept of interior passing/the kick out, he could be so much more valuable to this team.

I think the refs were too impressed to call it, lol.

by Nihonterp on Jan 15, 2012 4:56 PM EST reply actions

I personally think Faust

is in the points and airballs pool, and put that one over the backboard to make sure he got one.

by jfnatalie on Jan 15, 2012 4:58 PM EST reply actions

A few halftime stats

7 points, 1 assist for Stoglin.
3 points, 0 assists for Howard.
6 points, 5 boards, 4/4 from the stripe for Padge.
0 points, 3 attempts for Mosley.
8-9 from the stripe as a team.
25% shooting from the field as a team.
8 offensive boards for Maryland, 7 for Georgia Tech.
Combined 16 turnovers.

Big difference in the game right now is FT shooting. Perhaps the only difference. Md.’s gotten to the line more.

by Ben Broman on Jan 15, 2012 4:58 PM EST reply actions

by terpsallday on Jan 15, 2012 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

This is a legit bubble team and possibly more

we still have a ways to go. every time we got the lead to 12 or 10 and had chances to extend it, we would take awful shots and/or turn it over. pissed me off.

but to the Good Guys credit, every time GT got it to 4 or 6 points, we would score. alex len changes everything and I sincerely hope we learn to get it to him on spots where he likes it. he was great on the defensive glass and influenced / blocked a lot of shots.

sean, stogs, faust and padge were excellent. pe is a solid player. in my ideal world, he would be coming off the bench and we’d have a guy with jets that could dish and stroke it at that position.
