The New Reason to Hate Duke
Growing up as a Maryland basketball fan and watching the rivalry arise in the early 2000's I now have an all new reason to hate Duke, and that s what this rivalry has become if even that. I go to the games and I listen to my fellow students chant F*** Duke. I know they didn't watch MD in the early 2000's so I know they don't care. They show up for 1 Bball game and that is the Duke game, it is pathetic.
When my friends asked me last year if I got my ticket for the Duke game, I responded with of course, I got my ticket for this game just like every other game. It disgusts me how much these kids just want to go to one game, it's annoying and pathetic. I don't even care anymore about Duke, it's like I hate them more for what the students at Maryland do then anything Duke ever did. (Well that isn't really true, but you get the idea) This culture needs to be purged from the student body and the fanbase that the Duke game is the only one that matters. Is Duke our rival, sure, but so is UVA and NC State, but people don't chant stuff like that for these schools and they don't bring it up at Maryland Madness. I think we as fans need to fix this pathetic culture that has infected the student body. People need to care about the team and hate ACC competition and hate schools like Georgetown, not Duke who desn't give a rats behind about us.
I know this is kind of a long rant, but to summarize. I hate Duke so much. But how much I despise them for the obvious reasons, I hate them so much more for the culture that has been created in Maryland fandom and it needs to be fixed sooner rather than later. Not to mention Gary asked the students to stop saying it last year and that is more than enough for me.

Don't worry
In about 2 years, students will be showing up to every game to cheer on our top 15 team. Turge wil have Comcast rocking every game night. It’ll be just like the early 2000’s.
I don’t know if I would blame the students. For the most part, they don’t really know anything about the sports and the history and culture surrounding it. And I don’t know how that’s all that much different than undergrads from any other university, at least when they start their time here. It’s all a matter of marketing. There’s an obvious and concerted effort to drum up interest in the Duke games every year, but nothing for other schools. It needs to be more than a basketball game for the students to care. It needs to be an event. If they can figure out how to start getting students excited about the games and some festivities surrounding them, and have competetive and exciting games, the atmosphere will be better and it will draw more interest.

That is not true
I am from the area. I literally grew up watching every Terp game. I remember going to bed crying when we lost in 2001 in the final four. I don’t think it has to do with Duke. There are SO many cupcake games the first semester and a lot of games also take place over our winter break. I go to the games, and parking without a pass is very difficult. Second semester with a lot of ACC games you will see attendance skyrocket

Young fans
The student body is not any different than any other population. Only a small percentage are basketball fans a priori. The hope is that when kids get on campus even those that don’t care about basketball become interested in the sport. Usually that will happen when the teams are good are competing for March Madness position, competing for ACC titles and hopefully competing for National Championships. Once the Terps are back in the top 25 on a regular basis the fans will be back. When that happens, by the time kids are graduating they will be fans for life. Then they can tell incoming students how people were “real” fans when they attended the University.
I agree
I hate it when my friends just want to go to that game. I have only missed one game this year (football or basketball).
The worst thing is the assholes who scan and leave*
*Note: I consider scanning and leaving to be leaving any time before the outcome is clearly decided, regardless of which way it is.
Students who scan and leave should straight be banned from coming
I cannot stand fake fans.
Not to have this thought spin out of control
but a few posters and myself have gone into possible approaches to prevent scan and run from happening. I won’t go into it again, but that’s up to the Terrapin Club or whoever is monitoring point system to lobby/fix the system .

Some schools
Have a policy where you scan at the beginning and end of a game. That would make getting out of there a real pain in the arse, but it would be something. I hate when I get out of class or a metting and I am running over to the game to get there in time for tip off and I see people walking away laughing and chatting.
Like during finals week I understand if you go and you stay for a half or even in the early games and we are up big at the half and its against a cupcake and you want to leave early. But walking in, scanning and walking out another door is truly despicable and pathetic.

I absolutely agree about the scanning and leaving
It is probably the biggest pet peeve of mine about anything that is associated with the school. I am all for making it so that students are required to scan again after the game. I don’t care about the inconvenience of it taking longer to leave. If you want your loyalty point, you can’t leave until there are less than 10 minutes left in the second half. I think that’s totally fair.
I remember walking up to the gate before the Illinois game…THE FREAKING ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE! A huge home game early in the season! And I saw 3 guys leaving who had clearly just shown up for the free t-shirt. So I angrily said “you guys know there’s a game tonight too, right?” And they just laughed me off and kept walking. Makes me sick.
so we hate duke because we hate them?
you are right though, it is a bit annoying
I would like to agree, but
I went to the Maryland-Duke game on Greivis Vasquez senior night. I had not been to a Duke-MD game since before Coach K came to Duke. Relatives bought me the tickets, because I would not pay scalpers prices. That game was 100 times better than all the non-conference and lesser conference games I usually get to go to. Can you really blame students for also noticing there is a difference.
P.S. I am 45 years old, and I was yelling F*@! Duke louder than anyone.
I had a police escort when leaving...
they all turned right on Rt. 1, and I turned left.
I know this isn't a football post
but Vernon Davis is having a beast of a game. It makes me proud that he was a Terp!!!
Beat You!
Hang your head in shame!
Just kidding. I love Vernon Davis. As a Ravens fan I can’t stand the idea of Drew Brees in the superbowl.
I wonder if...
we will have a Harbowl Part 2!!! That’d be nice and we’d have at least two Terps in that game—-V.D and T.Smith.
Funny that Terpie Insider thinks...
That the dook rivalry started in the early 2000s….I remember starting to really dislike dook in the mid 1980s when Johnny Dawkins was there. Before that, there really wasn’t much hatred.
Funny thing, even at Carolina back then, they considered their rival to be NC St, not dook…..

I don't think this is a reason to hate Duke, but it is problematic
There are always going to be people who should F DUKE against Wake or whatever. I actually think being more successful will help in this regard; since around 2004 or so, I think there’s been a bit of a feeling like Duke is our season. We haven’t been nationally competitive since the natty, really, so it takes some of the fun for average fan out of going to all the games, etc. if we become elite again, the fans will be fine.
Geez, I though this Fanpost was gonna be about
Amile Jefferson commiting to dook or something. Good rant, but don’t scare me like that.
I also thought AJ post.
That’s why I clicked on it.
This is a stupid post
Who cares? As i have said before, we dont have any more of an attendance problem as any other middle of the pack ACC team, in fact we are doing pretty well. I was at the Wake game the other day and for a winter break game, it was fairly full and got REALLY loud at the end. The casual fan doesnt know much about this team besides that stoglin is good. when shaq len faust layman stogs howard padge pankey parker and allen are top 15 next year, people will be there in force
speaking of the wake game..
why in the hell was it so quiet in there in the 1st half when we were dominating? seemed like you guys needed the game to be close to get loud
Most hated teams recycle over the years
Back in the ’70’s and early ’80’s UNC, UVA and NC St. were our biggest basketball rivals, and Penn St. was the most hated football team. Hopkins in LAX.
Now it is Puke in bball and probably FSU in football. I can’t wait for the turnaround in both sports so we can watch the Terps Kick Ass in both sports. I hate all teams who go against the Terps.
there's a shift
but i don’t think the duke chant will ever end until its no longer in same conference as us. it is disappointing that even though the crowd rocks during big games, and also that there hasn’t been a trademark chant for each acc rival.
that would cement the fans as the best in the conference.
A culture change is needed
The culture of “F*** Duke” has become an unhealthy one at Maryland.
I hate Duke, as do nearly all Maryland fans. But when hatred of one team becomes an obsession that overrides everything else, there’s a problem. When people wear anti-Duke shirts to any non-Duke game, that is a problem. When people are even talking about Duke at any non-MD/Duke game, that’s lame.
Hating Duke basketball should not be the focus of the Maryland sports fan’s life. It should be about supporting Maryland, whether they’re playing Duke or Virginia or Temple or Towson or Albany or whoever. To me, it looks like some Terp fans have a massive inferiority complex. It’s as if “beating Duke” is the only important thing every year, never mind the other 30 games that the team plays.
The “scan and leave” stuff is awful. People who do that should be denied tickets to future games, IMO. If they don’t improve that system in the near future they’re doing a disservice to everyone.
I hope some of the folks here who are able to attend games can work to change the fan culture at UMD for the better, especially current students.

Oops, premature posting
Anyways…
Maybe this isn’t healthy, but a friend (and fellow MD alum) and I agreed that we would rather have a guarantee that Duke wouldn’t win a natty for 100 years than a guarantee that MD would win a natty the next year. We both hate Duke quite a bit.
Well ...
Yeah, that’s not healthy. :-)
If Duke’s next 20 seasons were just mediocre, we wouldn’t give a @#% about them anymore. It’d be kind of like what NC State has been like recently (since Jimmy V left). We may not like them, but I don’t think most Maryland fans have a passionate hatred for NC State. Contrast that with, for example, the mid 1970s, when NCSU and UMD were battling for the ACC crown.
We hate Duke because they’re really, really good and because they’ve given Maryland fans heartache over recent years, and that heartache is a great reason to hate ‘em. But it shouldn’t be at the expense of supporting Maryland over everything else.

Mr. Schadenfreude
No way I take that one. I’d “let” Duke win 20, if we can win even 5. I’d stomach that in a heartbeat!!!!

I Love this
It is so true. This one “big game spectacle” culture that has been brought about is a huge detriment to the reputation of the student body. as a student myself who shows up early and stays for every game no matter what, the people who get up for just one game a year make me want to drive a fork into my eyballs. its frankly an embarrassment that our fans only care about one game a year. ITS ACC BASKETBALL. every game is a big one. the culture needs to be changed, and commercials before games about sportsmanship will not do it. it has to come from the real fans, who do show up and behave appropriately (which means of course losing your voice). leading by example can go a far way, and once more fans see how their peers act, the tide will turn. it cant happen overnight, but in the long run, students have to be accountable for themselves, and the rest of the student crowd.
Someone get me a drink.
The only good thing about the "one game spectacle"
Is that it forces some of the more casual fans to go to those “cupcake” games in November. That’s how you can guarantee enough loyalty points for those duke tickets later on; and I think exposing those more casual fans to games other than the duke one really helps them turn into hardcore fans. But I agree that it’s frustrating that other ACC matchups are not treated the same way, the team needs the support just as much for those as they do the duke game. But the more hype the team gets the more students are gonna become diehard fans, and then Comcast will be rocking on a nightly basis!

Well
That’s a theory, I suppose, but with the “scan and leave” stuff it doesn’t work out that way.
Maryland needs to figure out a logistically convenient way to “scan on entry” and “scan on exit” that isn’t too disruptive (and one that prevents other students from scanning for their friends).

I still hate UVA more than Duke....
…based on personal experience with their deluded graduates. Most duke grads are actually quite nice and a bit puzzled that most MD fans have such hatred towards them….I myself find UNC BB more odious than Duke but UNC has sooooo many hot women whereas UVA is the bastion of unattractive estrogen.
But I do not get the hatred towards Duke. Without duke being great, MD might never have achieved greatness itself. Very few BB NCs come form conferences without great competition….and those teams usually play murderous OOC schedules ( UNLV I’m the early 90s).
Just saying.
R- hgr
Funny duke hatred story
When I really was old enough to start watching UMD bball was when the duke rivalry began. It’s in my blood to hate all things duke. That said I still went to every game at home and a lot of road games.
But after the 2008 season there was an article in sporting news about how teams hate duke because they are mostly white (some kind of reverse racism, seemed like bull to me). ANYWHO the picture in the article was me holding up a coach ratface poster at the game… my parents were so proud they went out and bought every copy at the grocery store.
We need to find a way to channel this hatred into love for the team. I think Turge will do this sooner rather than later
Yes
if those who went to the Duke game cuz they hate them, channeled it into unconditional love for their soon to be alma mater, then all games will be sold out again. Then again, if once we’re winning a bit bigger again, I believe it will take care of itself.

I grew up in Columbus Ohio during the 10 year war between Ohio State and Michigan. I believed that people from Ohio actually hated people from Michigan. My dad had to explain we wanted Michigan to win every game except the last last Saturday in November. What made it great was 2 teams playing great ball for 2 coaches at the prime of their careers for championships. It was also the upsets and broken hearts. Nobody has great memories about the 90s or 2000’s when the rivalry was not competitive.
Maryland is to Duke/UNC in basketball as Wisconsin is to OSU/Mich in football. MD fans need to embrace that role as their own and enjoy making the UNC/Duke game irrelevant.
Thanks for the link
