Season Tickets for 2012-2013

According to this article in the Washington Post they will be reseating the Comcast Center next year

http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/maryland-looking-for-ways-to-boost-revenue-from-basketball-team-comcast-center/2012/01/13/gIQA57K7wP_story.html

My opinion based on my experience with my season ticket is that currently the athletic department hasn't done a lot for the average season ticket holder who attends every game but doesn't have a lot of disposable income to spend on the basketball program. My own downfall is that I go to a lot of Nats games and that's where the money goes. Based on seniority and given the current number of season ticket holders I think that I would get a significant upgrade in my seat selection everything else being equal. But because I feel forgotten as a season ticket holder I am a little apprehensive about the process for 2012-2013.

It occurred to me that during this re-seating, why not just move all the students to "the wall" as it is 2/3's empty

If the athletic department could simply sell the tickets in the lower student bowl to big donors who are willing to pay $75 a game per seat plus requisite large donation, the athletic department budget problem would be solved.

Yes its displacing some students, but its also allowing other student athletes to keep playing. Just an idea.

I was just thinking this

Don’t move them all up to the wall, but maybe only have them on one side of the court+wall. In addition to extra money, I think it would make the student section a bit more intimidating since they would all be bunched together.

that's the way Cole was - can work too

but having students on both sides gives players that “got you surrounded” feel – that’s why Gary pushed for that. If the students have high energy, either way it doesn’t matter.

The trade-off being losing home court advantage…. The wall is only 2/3rds empty for non-conference games and on breaks.

It would be better to sell some of the seats on the wall, which actually have a pretty good view. As long as old people are willing to climb the stairs.

Also, no reason why lower 107 has to be a student section.

Agree re: 107

Most students don’t even realize that’s student seating

I’m strongly against reducing the number of student seats though, that’s just asking for backlash. But I think it might not be a bad idea to give one side of the good seats to ticket holders, and expand the number of student seats on the wall to offset it.

IIRC it was fairly sparse for the Wake game

That’s when I got the idea.

Also-anyone know how much the “Courtside Club” is to get into? I was a guest of sorts and Johnny Rhodes came through, Lights Out, Walt Williams, got to hear Turge barking orders, Stogs yelling “And 1!” during a drive…it was totally great. Johnny Rhodes is a great guy BTW-good to see his jersey go to the rafters.

Dunno, but people sitting there get passes to a halftime bar in the tunnels with beer, wine, and mixed drinks.

Uh F*CK THAT

Do you know how much I pay in student athletic fees? Its more than season tickets cost in the first place.

If you people are so pissed about the wall being empty, you go sit there, don’t take the bowl away from the students who always fill it

Budget

Are you aware that students make up a large percentage of the athletic department’s budget with their student fees? There definitely should be no displacement of students. Plus, Maryland basketball hasn’t been great the last two years. Now that things are trending up, attendance will increase. Displacing the students is not an option.

Yup

Won’t happen because of this.

by biggerboy on Jan 14, 2012 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely ridiculous!

No student tickets should be removed. If anything the student seats in the upper half of the wall could be switched for season ticket holders, but nothing else. And I am not a current student.

Could work too

Just insane to see so many empty seats-not just the student section either-and thinking about teams getting cut.

I agree that decreasing the amount of student tickets would take away from the home court advantage. Why not charge the students a small fee for conference games. Most other schools like Virginia Tech require students to buy season tickets and pay for them. Non ACC games would be empty if we did this but they could charge a small fee, $5 maybe, for the conference games for student tickets. This would generate some money that they currently aren’t making. It wouldn’t stop me as a student from going but that may not be the case for all students. Or another idea is charging students for the lower tickets and making the wall still free. Only the more active and true student fans would be willing to pay for the lower bowl student tickets anyway so this could actually help increase the atmosphere in Comcast. Just an idea that hasn’t been discussed yet.

All full-time students, even those with no interest in sports, pay the Athletic department $400 annually.

by discuit on Jan 14, 2012 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

Idk

but we do pay fees. I’m a current students and there are fees for everything. I mean, you can “remove” the fee but that means you won’t get tickets. The same applies for like the gym. If you remove that fee, then they won’t let you in. I think that’s how it was explained to me.

Nope. But according to NCAA rules, they are ‘boosters’ because of their vested interest in the school’s athletics.

by discuit on Jan 14, 2012 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

Correct......

Not automatic, but I believe the minimum donation is $50. So it doesn’t cost much to join the club.

by TwerpsNoMore on Jan 14, 2012 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

I understand that. Virginia Tech still does the athletics fee and makes the students pay for tickets as well. This would not be a popular decision amongst the students but just because we pay for the athletics fee doesnt mean free tickets are required by any means.

I'd sue

I wouldn’t pay an athletics fee for athletic events I’m not allowed to attend

by kryptonianjorel on Jan 14, 2012 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

Except you’re allowed to attend every other sport. So good luck with that.

I am graduating this spring

Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much really shitty season tickets cost (if they will even be available for purchase)? I’m trying to budget but it’s hard to figure out as a not-yet Terrapin Club member

by jlh12308 on Jan 15, 2012 11:12 PM EST reply actions

OK so the wall was about 1/4 full last night and even the student lower bowl wasn't nearly filled

I think its time to do something. That was a big game last night and attendance sucked-and yes I know the Ravens game was on but it ended just as the game was starting.

If all the students on the wall were in the lower bowl the wall would have been empty.

Convince UMD to let students stay in north campus dorms over winter break? Thousands of students are literally not allowed to live in their dorm rooms until next week.
