Bradford Officially Out as Defensive Coordinator at Maryland
Official word has come from Maryland that defensive coordinator Todd Bradford has negotiated a buyout and won't be returning next season. So now our speculation can officially shift from "is Maryland going to fire him" to "who will replace him?"
Randy Shannon, please.

Maryland, home of the Double Randy?
Your comment caused a word association in my mind.
Very Randy = sounds like Vandy.
Who’s the mascot of Vandy? The Commodores.
Who’s the commodore? David Robinson.
David Robinson will be the next DC at MD.
I’m sorry for wasting everyone’s time with that.

there was a flaw in your logic. Randy is closer to sandy(q,R,S,t) and who is the most famous sandy in the world?

Wait
isn’t David Robinson the Admiral? Did he get a demotion/promotion?
haha
Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Ok
but a simple wrong would have done just fine
You're looking at this all wrong...
You made a mistake here:
Who’s the mascot of Vandy? The Commodores.
Who’s the commodore? David Robinson.
Instead of asking “Who’s the commodore?”, you should do this:
Who’s the lead singer of The Commodores? Lionel Ritchie.
Who does Lionel Ritchie look like? Jason Campbell
Jason Campbell played on a Redskins team that was loaded with stars from which school? Miami
Who was the Head Coach and/or Defensive Coordinator and/or Assistant Coach when those players were at Miami? Randy Fucking Shannon.
There we go, Randy Shannon is our next DC.
wow - doin' work, REAL work - lol

Hopefully the delay was due to waiting for Randy Shannon. Now that he’s hopefully locked up, they pulled the trigger on firing Bradford. Same goes if the new DC is LJ. I question the decision if there’s not someone lined up and hired within the next week. Signing day is right around the corner and not having a DC would probably prevent all of the big names from signing for the Terps.

Pretty sure LJ is off the board.
O’Brien decided to retain him at PSU.
just because
O’Brien wants to retain him doesnt mean he is staying at PSU. Yes it probably unlikely he leaves but to say that he’s 100% staying is far from correct. MD could top the PSU offer and maybe that does it for LJ. Here’s hoping
Yep.
That’s why I said “pretty sure.” But all available evidence does point to him staying. The good news is that RS is definitely back on the board.
I still think
He might have some miami baggage that kept Tenn from hiring him.

It's clear
this team had no chance of competing with Bradford at the helm of the defense. It is true the defense had injuries and the offense ToP was horrible, but the NC St. game was the last straw.
I’ve maintained that this can be a good football team with Edsall as the HC if he is given quality coordinators. I think the poor playcalling and schemes were just as much to blame as Edsall if not more.
You have Locks. Let’s get a good DC in there and a 6-6 record with a Bowl appearance should not be unrealistic for next year.
that would be my minimum for next year
6-7 wins, but the good recruiting class will all be freshmen. You won’t see an immediate impact from these guys. I would expect 8-9 wins with an Atlantic division title (or at least close to one) in 2013.
Yes, yes he does
Last 5 defenses as DC at Miami were all top 10, he’d be able to help us recruit Florida, and he is a well known disciplinarian which will help offset any possible questions parents might have about about Mike Locksley being hired
Sal Sunseri to be DC at Tennessee
So Shannon would appear to be available.
Was just going to post this
While it does make it more likely, I’d still be surprised if it was Shannon and not Stewart. Not upset, would much rather have Shannon, just don’t see it right now.

Brian Stewart from UH?
Interesting possibility. He put together decent defenses down there, but wouldn’t be quite the splash we might be hoping for. Of course, splash doesn’t equate to quality.

This is the strong rumor I hear
negotiations are ongoing with Brian Stewart. I think his NFL conncection (Cowboys) could be useful.
Unlikely
In fact I’m not sure how strong of a recruiter he is, has never had to prove himself in that category. Beyond the last couple years with Houston he had been in the NFL for forever. Not saying he’d be a bad recruiter, just nothing to go on other than pure speculation. Plus, I’d be shocked if we were able to pull any decent kids out of Texas with all of the heavy hitters down there.
by FeartheTurtle2002 on Jan 13, 2012 12:59 PM EST up reply actions
Interesting...
On Stewart’s watch, the University of Houston’s red zone defense was ranked 2nd in the nation, trailing only Alabama. This past season, the Cougars were ranked 7th in the nation in turnover margin after being ranked 88th in 2010. Also, the Cougars improved in scoring defense from being ranked 96th in the nation in 2010 to 40th in the country this past season.
Former University of Houston Defensive Coordinator Brian Stewart is believed to be one of the top candidates to replace Casteel [at WVU]… Stewart is also well known as a great recruiter.
I heard on the sports animal in Tn
that Shannon might not be clear of the Miami trouble yet and that is why Tn didn’t go after him……
Shannon kept Miami from the death penalty. He knew Shapiro was a shady guy and never messed with him
but until the NCAA rules on it who knows.

Agreed
The contracts given to Crwtn and Bradford were awful, but the one silver lining in this whole mess is that KA is not afraid to spend money and is willing to correct mistakes. Many times, that is what’s lacking in an AD. Is he perfect? No. But he’s better than what we had in prior years. It looks like Turgoen and his staff were good hires and now Locksley is reaping some benefits. Hopefully the new DC will follow suit.

Did he really have to buy him out?
I thought it was revealed that both Bradford and Crowton were on a bi-weekly payroll, and thus we wouldn’t have to buy them out if they were let go?
Crowton was easily let go by a fluke
He never signed his contract, so he technically was never bound by any rules in the contract. Therefore, MD was able to let him go easier than Bradford, who did sign his contract
What an idiot...
How do you not sign your contract?
has there been talk about Kevin Steele from Clemson?
Also two recruits committed because of the Mechanical Engineering Dept: Amba Etta-Tawo and Albert Reid
not impressed
His defense got toasted against s. Miss and wasn’t the dominating in a weak conference.

He was actually hired as the ILB coach

Dudzinski was hired as a result of moving Bradford from ILB coach to DC.
by FeartheTurtle2002 on Jan 13, 2012 3:17 PM EST up reply actions
Yes, technically he handles ILB while Johnson does OLB
I find it strange that we hired a full-time coach to handle three or four people max. So I’m guessing he does all the linebackers and Johnson’s responsibility is nominal.
And on second glance Bradford was actually the secondary coach. We don’t have one right now.
Tom Bradley would be a bigger win for Maryland than Randy Shannon.

Isn’t Bradley totally clear of everything? Didn’t know anything, no one told him, that’s it? Other than guilt by association?
Unfortunately he most likely is
Considering he’d been there for something like 30 years and was reportedly close to Sandusky, at least from a coaching POV. I’m not saying I wouldn’t be happy with him as our DC, I’d probably be happy, but I don’t see how our board could justify not hiring Leach but then hiring Bradley.
Then there’s the thing that Charlotte posted yesterday with the poll of the HS basketball players, and most said they would definitely be turned off by a Penn State situation happening at a school recruiting them. Obviously we’re not Penn State, but I don’t know how parents would feel about there kids going to a school where we have a Penn State lifer as our DC.

Kevin Steele is now on the market as well
Down here in SC, Kevin Steele was forced out at Clemson. The scuttlebutt is that he and Dabo had a difference in philosophy over practice style. Steele is old-school and likes to hit during the week, while Dabo does not want full-contact at all during practice. Thus, our sister-blog at Clemson has fondly referred to the ACC Champs as “The Charmin Ultra Soft Tigers”
Steele is pretty intense and a decent recruiter. Good we have options.

Reach Out to Tom Bradley
We should reach out to Tom Bradley and see if he has any interest in the Def. Coordinator position! He has over 10 years experience as a DC and is considered a GOOD recruiter. Maryland would not be a big geographical move for him(same general recruiting area), and he is only 55 yrs old. (which means he will still want to coach for at least 8-10 more years) I think unless Shannon , has signed on the dotted line with us we should investigate ALL options or RISK a repeat of last years debacle, by being forced to hire a Bradford.Look at LJsr too! But make sure we get the best we can get!
KA
I think the guy is trying to right the ship. All indication are these moves were initiated by him and accepted by Edsall.
Firing Edsall, while justifiable, was not practical. Too much money at stake and you would scare off any good replacement with that precedent.
So what’s the next best thing? Getting RE some help, especially on the recruiting side which was almost totally neglected with the initial hires. KA has screwed some things up but this isn’t one of them. He didn’t stand there with his hands in his pockets and watch everything go to sh*t. He is trying to get it right. Maybe it won’t work but Randy can’t say he didn’t get any support if things continue downhill.
He also knows that while he is paying out some buyouts if we have another 2-10 season it will cost a hell of a lot more than that in lost revenue.
Buoyed by recent commitments from Wes Brown and Albert Reid, prized CB Jalen Tabor is excited about Maryland as a budding destination for highly rated local recruits.

You succeeded in showing that you can edit wikipedia, thats about it
All edits have to go through a vetting process. The fact that it take 5 minutes or so for someone to get around to checking your edit is fairly irrelevant. For the most part, the articles can be assumed as accurate.
We aren’t writing research papers here, so I find it odd that you are so staunchly against citing wikipedia in a thread where 3 or 4 twitter rumors are being discussed.
by Womp Womp on Jan 14, 2012 11:53 AM EST up reply actions 3 recs
You know what...
It took over an hour. And had it been something remotely believable, I am sure that thousands of people would had read it and cited. I could have written a perl script if I really wanted to troll that would had enforced that change until Wiki had time to look the article down, a process that can take days.
If you are going to cite twitter (we can gauge the reliability on the source) fantastic, but citing wikipedia as fact is retarded when you can google it and find a reasonable article for us to find.
You can do whatever you want, but you can also not shit on me for opposing it as a reasonable place to cite something from.

If you think you can accurately gauge a source's reliability on twitter,
You either haven’t been on twitter or you don’t know what the word “reliability” means. Here’s some light reading:
http://summerhoopscoop.blogspot.com/2011/06/experiment-in-modern-recruiting-news.html
I’m not saying you’re wrong that wiki isnt 100% reliable, but it’s somewhat amusing that you are so worked up about reliability on a straightforward topic when a third of this site’s material deals with much more ambiguous topics citing much less reliable sources.
Chill out. It’s a fan message board. Wait for the WaPo write up if you are worried about sources.
by Womp Womp on Jan 15, 2012 1:24 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Whatever
I wasn’t worked up at all until you went all crazy, what I was saying is when someone is tweeting the information, you know WHO is tweeting it. You can gauge the reliability of the information based on the historical accuracy of that poster. Simple logic. Wikipedia is inaccurate often enough that some really silly information can be distributed. I am sorry you are butt hurt that your professors won’t let you cite it because you believe it to be accurate; however, if someone can post an update like the head coach of Penn State quitting to coach at Towson, it is simply not reliable.
I simply found it amusing that someone went to wikipedia for information that was so pervasive across the internet, and cited perhaps one of the LEAST reliable sources possible. So I made a post I found entertaining, and apparently I struck a chord. My bad.
To settle this
Perhaps you should just view this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9gN2hdybFY
And realize that it applies not only to me, but to anyone that replied to my wiki screenshot.
I never disagreed with you
I know it happens – no big deal – I merely showed a statment of LJSr’s hiring date – it has not been corrected as of today. It’s not as if someone was motivated to pull a “prank” by putting a date down or the wrong date.
Bur your point is noted – I rarely use wiki except to look at info in science, and take it with a grain of salt as it is.

Quickly scanned this post and in summary: KC and the sunshine band are coming to be dc and earth wind and fire are the new special team coaches?
by Terp2B on Jan 13, 2012 9:35 PM EST via mobile reply actions
There is one important thing everyone is neglecting regarding the hiring of a DC.
Any coach with any brains will stay away from MD. Why do you think we are having trouble finding one? It doesn’t matter how good you are, if the team plays a hurry-up offense the defense spends too much time on the field but it won’t be the offense that gets blamed because they are scoring points. It will be the defense because they are allowing points and nobody will consider the fact they spend too much time on the field.
Bottom line: The only DC we get will either be someone who isn’t really that good or someone who doesn’t understand what they are in for. Either way, we will never have a good defense as long as we keep running a similar offense.
Almost any team you can name at any level that has a high scoring offense also allows lots of points to be scored against them. So unless we have a defense that is stacked three deep (will never happen) our defense will be mediocre at best.
Fear the Turgle!
The hurry-up offense you speak of ...
…has left the building.
I always wondered why Edsall would allow a hurry-up offense anyways.
With his personality I would have expected smash-mouth. Some of the guys we are recruiting play this way so maybe things really are looking up.
Fear the Turgle!
Disagree. Coming into this situation,
u almost have to be successful. Young guys, bad last year …. a smart choice would be to come in and author the turnaround.
by Gabes on Jan 14, 2012 12:22 PM EST up reply actions 2 recs
Some variant of the hurry up is here to stay
Oregon, Stanford, Ok. State, WVU, Clemson, etc. Clearly, it’s offense that fills seats. Anyone think it’s a coincidence that the NFL went its entire history with one 5,000 yard passer before this season and suddenly Brees, Brady, and Rogers plus his game 16 backup all go for 5k in the same season? The rules skew to the offense and every DC knows that. I think it’s critical for MD to find someone who can recruit well, who the young men want to play for and who sees MD as an untapped opportunity and wants to prove it. I’s also like to see the situation wrapped up this week with only a bit more than 2 weeks until signing day.
Don't worry be happy!
Just hours ago we were all wondering why The Todd was still in place and if because of $ issues KA would play a shell game. To his credit he didn’t. Crowton and The Todd with no area ties or real interest in Maryland are thankfully gone. Bad hires but we learn and move on. In comes Locks at OC with a love for the area and wanting to be at Maryland. Is he the best x and o’s OC in NCAA football? Probably not but local kids trust him and want to play for him. I will take that any day over the big name flop who wouldn’t even recruit we had at OC. Now who will we get to take the DC job you ask? We don’t need anyone to “take” the job but rather a DC who wants the job for the positive impact he can bring to the program. Don’t need a big name or big ego guy IMHO just a solid and experienced DC who will recruit, teach and wants to be here for more reasons than just a job. Go Terps!

Having good players who WANT to play for a coach,
can overcome some Xs & Os deficiencies. You could have the best Xs & Os coach in the country, but if the kids don’t want to play for you, you’re still gonna have problems.
something to feel good about (ex-terps wise)

Rumors are that the new DC will be Brian Baker. I wish it were a “bigger” name who could make an immediate impact on recruiting some top talent.
