Last Night in the ACC

Boston College 59 Clemson 57

I was not overly impressed with either team in the first game last night. Looking at the box score, you would think there must have been great defense. But if you watched the game, you saw a lot of lazy defense. I am not saying these teams are awful, but Maryland should be able to play with either one. The Terps will be able to out-rebound Boston College and out-shoot Clemson.

Duke 61 Virginia 58

By contrast, in the second game, there was outstanding defense, especially on the perimeter, by both teams. It was easy to see why these two teams(with Carolina) are a cut above the rest of the conference. About the only bad thing I can say about Duke(and I would like to find more) was Mason Plumlee's free-throw shooting. He was 2-10, so perhaps he should think about transferring to Maryland. His dad was wearing Under Armour, so who knows. The worst part of this game was the announcing. I'm not complaining about Dickie V this time, but rather Mike Patrick. He was constantly saying the wrong player's name. "Mike Scott with the THREE. That's not part of his game." That's probably because that wasn't Mike Scott, that was Malcolm Brogdon, who looks nothing like him. Then later, when Mike Scott did hit a three at the end of the half, he called him Brogdon first, before correcting himself.

HAHA, this made me laugh

UVA > duke

Howboften will Sammy z shoot 0-12 or whatever he did last night. He had an awful night. Even if he shoots 30% UVA wins that’s game by a few baskets. I’m not impressed with duke this year. I think UVA and duke offer the best chances for md to win a game against a tier 1 acc school.

BC didnt get run out of the gym against Carolina

watched a bit of that game and while not overly impressive, BC did enough to keep it around 10 throughout…actually made a run late, and were a missed 3 from cutting it to 6 or 7 with about 6 minutes left. UNC pushed it back to double figures, but they were tested. While bad, BC cant be overlooked.

I'm doing my graduate work at URI, who went into BC and won

URI was 2 – 12 going into that game with a 32-point loss to Georgia State. The fact that BC won an ACC game left me speechless.

Whose job am I supposed to call for now?

Devin Booker

Went 4-7, which sounds good, but all three misses were from point-blank range. Clemson missed a lot of shots where nobody was guarding them.

We gotta watch out for UVA

UVA might be the second best team in the conference. hey would have beaten duke if their shooters weren’t cold. We got a touch schedule now. Remember we play unc, duke and uva twice. 6 tough games

What did you expect our record to be

at this point in the season? I figured we’d be 9-6, and thought we’d lose both games to UVA, Dook and UNC. We’re ahead of schedule, IMO.

by curterp on Jan 13, 2012 8:54 AM EST up reply actions

I thought we would be better than most people thought

I thought we wouldn’t beat Notre Dame. Either than that everything is going to plan. I originally thought 7-9 in ACC play but now maybe, 8-8 or 9-7. Duke is overrated. We should split with them. Virginia is tough but I think a split will happen too. UNC is too good with NBA ready players. An upset could happen but it isn’t likely. I’m thinking 2-4 in those six games. 3-3 or better would be icing on the cake

This now means

we’re in 4th place in the conference behind unc dook and uva

The ACC is horrible this year

might be the 5th best conference. I think it’ll be back on top in a year or two with the way teams are recruiting and once all the new coaches get settled in.

and lets go to Bentleys...

I think you are spot on!

Duke may be the best in the ACC this year with most other colleges a step below, But, even they are not playing all that well.

no way is duke the best in the conference this year

unc is easily better, im just waiting for duke to get taken down by a couple middling acc teams like NC state vt and us to get pulled back to the middle of the conference

Lets gooo Maryland

No doubt...

.. if for no other reason then we are getting syracuse and pitt (they are having a terrible year, but i doubt they’ll be down long)

I saw the UA swag on Plumlee dad too and was cracking up

No one can stop the click clack…

Plumlee’s dad hears us coming too :)

I watch about half the game. UVa ran those back door cuts with precision. But I still am not crazy about Bennett’s offensive sets. They rely on Mike Scott more than we rely on Stogs for their offense. Cut off Scott’s head, and you kill UVa. I’d blanket Scott like mad when we play them. He poses match up problems. He’s 6’8", good size and quick. I don’t know who we can use to stop him frankly. Mosley smaller, can be posted up, but more experienced. Nick, good size and quickness to counteract Scott, but inexperience may get him schooled. AP/JP – not quick enough/experienced, prolly will split the assignment with Mosley – mix up the match ups to throw him off a bit.

yep - he will fit the bill

and become the Mike Scott type player if he adds 30 lbs! He is prolly a different physique than Scott, but I’m sure hopeful he’ll be a player and keep improving through the years. Actually, it’s sacrilegious, but I’d guestimate (although I didn’t see his game in HS) JL to a young Dunleavy Jr. – similar build, quick for their height, etc. But not sure what stage of development each was at in HS to truly compare.

I think Mike Patrick is great

I don’t care if he messes up. Plus, he’s all the way up in the rafters calling the game. What a terrible location. Give him a break.

Mike Patrick has a monitor and a spotter talking in his ear.

I have done college and high school football and basketball play-by-play. Cameron is not that large. He was not making mistakes on the Duke players’ names. Clearly he just didn’t know which Virginia player was which. He does have an amazing voice, which is why it is funny when he makes an obvious mistake.

Guys like Patrick and Dan Bonner are the ACC when it comes to announcers

theyve been calling games since at least the 80’s…they may screw up, but it just “sounds like” a big ACC game when they’re on the air

by Asnis71 on Jan 13, 2012 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

I gotta agree,

but Mike Patrick can be brutal to listen to when your team is playing. When they’re up, Patrick builds them up like nobody else. Before long you think you’re watching the ‘96 Bulls. Then, once they inevitable start losing control (as UMD always does), he tears them down like they’re the 2012 Wizards. He can make a run of bad plays sound like the apocalypse.

I watched the game last night and it was hard to read

the numbers on the Virginia uniforms because it was orange on black. I got Scott messed up with Atkins and Brogdon and Akil Mitchell. Their numbers being 23, 32,22 and 25 and I can see why Patrick or whoever was in his ear was messing up. On TV the court just looks so far away. Plus, everyone knows the Duke players but the same can’t be said for Virginia since they’ve been sorry for so long until this year. I don’t recall any “Holy Cows” or “Are you kidding mes?” last night.
