Maryland Minute 1.12.12 - Mike Locksley Making Waves in Football Recruiting

Doin' work.

Ron Darby meeting with Maryland and Mike Locksley
Landing Ronald Darby, much like landing Eddie Goldman or Stefon Diggs, would be mind-numblingly awesome, especially after seeing where he ended up in the updated Scout and 247 rankings over the past few days (#9 on Scout, #16 on 247). I've always considered him the least likely of the big three, though: he's the only one to commit somewhere else over Maryland, the only one without a teammate or two in his ear, and of course he'll be influenced by the track program, of which Maryland is currently without. It'll be a massive challenge for Locksley, but if anyone turn him, it's probably Locks. - BB

247 Releases Final 2012 Football Rankings
The whole list is worth checking out but of interest to Terp fans are:

Stefon Diggs - #10

Eddie Goldman - #14

Ronald Darby - #16

Wes Brown - #171

Of those top 3 uncommitted, the Terps probably have the best shot with Diggs. Would be a HUGE pickup.

Coach: Terps running back commitment Albert Reid is 'a complete back'
High school coaches always have positive things to say about their players but I'm particularly excited about Albert Reid. Between him and Wes Brown, the Terps should be stacked at running back for years to come.

Star-divide

Terrapins withstand second-half charge by Demon Deacons to win, 70-64 - The Washington Post
In case you want a little more coverage from the win last night. Or you just want to read awesome quotes from Mark Turgeon.

"I’m trying to make Terrell a man," Turgeon said. "There are responsibilities out of basketball you have to do. We’ll see if it helps him. It’s nothing major, but the kid needs to grow up."

Maryland back in mix with nation's best- ESPN
With all the upheaval surrounding the men's programs it's been easy to forget about the women's basketball team. They're quietly putting together their best season in years: 16-0 and ranked 5th in the nation.

Chivas USA Select Casey Townsend With No. 5 Pick
To anyone who's even a casual supporter of Maryland soccer the name Casey Townsend should be familiar. The Terps' leading goal scorer was taken 5th overall by Chivas USA, a MLS squad based out of Carson, California.

I thought when Diggs was asked about Maryland he laughed at us

If that is true, and we have the best shot with him, that’s not encouraging at all

Exactly

Never underestimate the power of Locks

Brown and Darby have played pop warner together

going back to the age of 9!

so you have your facts wrong

by tiimbitz4786 on Jan 12, 2012 6:21 PM EST reply actions

I believe what you're referring to is "the only one without a teammate or two in his ear"

Do 18-year olds play Pop Warner? I was under the impression that they stopped doing that at like age 12.

I’m not saying that these guys aren’t friendly, I’m sure there’s a network all through DC and Maryland and to a lesser extent the entire country. But they don’t play on the same team right now, they don’t see each other in the hallways/locker rooms, etc. “We played Pop Warner when we were 10” is probably as powerful as “I became friendly with a bunch of FSU commitments at the Under Armour All-American game.”

Some people don’t like that he calls his players out, but they almost always respond with strong efforts. He seems like he’s a great motivator

Abner Logan

Just has that look that he’ll be good. Dude looks like he’s a good athlete for his size.

He's got a nice frame and build

If he puts in the time, he could be absolutely jacked when he’s a junior/senior

Speaking of looking good

Take a dander over to Diggs’ pictures, the one in his Good Counsel uniform with the visor on… damn… bad ass

by T Free on Jan 12, 2012 7:06 PM EST up reply actions

Haha Porzel is from my town

He is a straight bum. Man has a kid that’s around 4 now and he goes to all the high school football games with high schoolers. I really hope none of our players are drawing comparisons to him

I was talking about on the field

Adams and Brown are bruisers. Reid and Porzel are burners.

Not a clue.

Whitaker is a lovable teddy bear. Locks is a shark.

Actually, Whitaker makes sense

Anyone who saw Last King of Scotland, the Idi Amin biopic knows FW can depict a charismatic shark very well. Dude has boatloads of intensity.

Anybody else ever notice how Joe Flacco looks like that guy from the Mummy?

Nice W for BC, UVA looking real good at DUKE.

ACC

UVA losses close game at DUKE. But as DUKIE VITALE, said over and over again, UVA will win their share of games. F’n UVA was 14-2 going into this game !! Thanx for the insight, DUKIE V. I don’t know how Mike Patrick doesn’t just choke his ASS at every T.V. timeout.

by PADGE on Jan 12, 2012 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, just watched that crap too.

Mike Patrick is just as bad sometimes, they make a perfect duke ball-sucking douchebag pair.

True fact

Caught Dickie V crowdsurfing in the Crazies before a game. I have the pics to prove it.

Thank Ben...

For taking down the preceding comments about Joe Flacco. There’s a time and place for everything and bashing Joe with the looming game was tastless.

by TwerpsNoMore on Jan 13, 2012 4:25 AM EST up reply actions

I think it was more because of non-terp/NFL related material

on a terps sports blog. Ben’s a skin fan, don’t think he was ofended by Flacco bashing.

by 1 proud terp on Jan 13, 2012 7:19 AM EST up reply actions

In fact, *ahem* FLACCO SUCKS

Kidding, of course, I dig the handlebar mustache. But I didn’t actually see the comments. I assume Dave/Ben G took ’em down.

by Ben Broman on Jan 13, 2012 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

can you say WINNERRRR!!!

He IS a little goofy, but he wins and I agree with the non-Terp related material, BUT THE SKINS???….. Ben!….. BennyBoy!…… Buddy, that ship is at the bottom of Lake Disaster. Come on Man, we’re only thirty miles up the road. Our stadium is like the Statue of Liberty….. Give us your deprived, Your weak, Your delusional fans and we will take them in and house them and feed them and let them see how it could be if you didn’t have such a Knuckelhead Owner.

Do NOT

mock ’Skins fans for being loyal.

by terpsallday on Jan 13, 2012 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

CHILLAX!!!

You would be a turd if you were not LOYAL. Dude, your Nationals are about to take off in a year or two and you can bash my hapless Orioles owner all you want. Doesn’t change the fact that crappy ownership, produces crappy teams.

by TwerpsNoMore on Jan 13, 2012 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

Not an O's fan but

on the bright side of things at least they’re better than the Pirates who haven’t had a winning season in almost 20years.

Steelers Fan ALERT!!! ALERT!!! ALERT!!!

You are my Half Brother #@%$*Terp42. From this day forward, please DO NOT make any references to Pittsburg Pirates, Steelers or Little Fat Birds that swim. Only the Panthers are allowed, LOL.

by TwerpsNoMore on Jan 13, 2012 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

As a Nats fan I was trying to think of a positive, but you need not worry about pens or pirates references since i don’t like either team.

by SteelTerp42 on Jan 14, 2012 7:59 AM EST up reply actions

Actually

….. I’m an O’s fan too. sigh

Edsall

If Locks is doing all the recruiting, what do we need Edsall for? He can just drop his ideas for new rules into the suggestion box

by TerpfanMA on Jan 12, 2012 9:48 PM EST reply actions

Lox looks like Suge Knight in that pic.

Goldman = Dr. Dre
Darby = Snoop
Diggs = Tupac

C’mon fellas, come join us at Death Row
(insert Edsall joke here)

Love the visual, not so much the metaphor

Since about 3 years after the Source cover, Pac was dead and Dre & Snoop were off the label…

Womp Wooooomp, debbie downer, haha.

And Knight went to jail…but at the time, Death Row was the shiiiiznit!!!

Tom Bradley

I see that Tom Bradley was not interviewed by NEW Penn St. Head Coach Bill O’Brien! He should be considered for our D- Coordinator vacancy! He is a very experienced and successful coordinator. Larry Johnson Sr. and VanDerlinden are reportedly staying at Penn St. and Bradley has been senior to both during his years in Happy Valley. Something Edsall should seriously consider.

Bradford gone?

“@sunjeffbarker: Maryland has completed a negotiated buyout of defensive coordinator Todd Bradford’s contract. School will now act quickly on replacement.”
